The Best Of? Ha!

My first New Order release was The Best Of...bought because it had both True Faith and Regret on it. :D

However, I found it really hard to get into...I loved the first 4 tracks, but Fine Time was a sticking point, and after that the songs just seemed to blend together (except Blue Monday...which I of course knew, but didn't know what it was called or who it was by...ahh ignorance ). I've never thought much of World In Motion either...but then I hate football :p

Then I saw Crystal on TOTP2 I think, and I really liked that song, so I bought Get Ready, loved it, and set about discovering more of the New Order back catalogue by buying Technique, Power Corruption And Lies, and then later on Republic, Low Life (obsession triggerer), Brotherhood, Movement, and most recently Retro.

The more I listen to these albums, the more The Best Of seems like an incredibly poorly chosen retrospective...it's missing so much! Who on earth chose the tracklisting?

The Best Of nearly put me off New Order...kinda defeats then object of such a collection doesn't it?

Most people have a gripe with that collection. Put together by the record company with new mixes of songs, never a good idea.

When I did my best of for the Q meet up in February, I didn't include half the songs on it and pretty much took inspiration from disc 1 of Retro. Yes, everyone here hates Miranda Sawyer but she has got that disc about right.

Fine Time hasn't aged well and I get bored of Thieves. TBTHOG has never been a favourite for me although the Peel version is really good.

And the Best Of doesn't contain Ceremony or Temptation

Just Substance to get then you have the official studio albums

Peel Sessions are worth a listen as well.

I bought the Best of... years ago (after substance, might i add) and never really liked it. Sure, it has some good tunes on it, but what kind of best of new order cd has World in Motion, Fine Time and Blue Monday 88 and doesnt have Ceremony or Temptation. Shocking.

I like it simply because it was the only disc that had "Touched By the hand of God", I hadn't been able to find that anywhere. Otherwise, it's an unnecessary buy now (I think Touched is on Retro)

But then if you all thought The Best Of was pointless - then INTERNATIONAL was a hundred times more so. What a pile of crap that was.....what exactly was the purpose of THAT one - other than another record company contract filling obligation?

If you ask 100 NOOLers what 15 NO tracks they would like to see on a best of compilation, you are going to get 100 different track listings. Granted, some tracks will be the same such as true Faith, BLT, etc., but there will be a wide variety of optinion (all of them are probably valid). Then throw in the opinions of some label people and we have a much more commercialized product.

The purpose of a compilation like this is not to satisfy the fan who has all the albums anyway, or the fan who takes time to hang out on NOOL (or any other fan-forum) regularly. The purpose of a compilation like this is to a) make more money for the label, and b) attract potential fans to the back-catalogue.

Seeing your post, I'd say that they succeeded... ;)

Wondering why I bought this myself...at this used record store I could've purchased Twisted Tenderness Deluxe or PCL.

Let's Go (Nothing for Me) is a pure novelty, not good at all. Why not put True Faith 87 on, it's far superior to anything since or ever will be. Bizzare Love Triangle 94 is boring. Fine Time is tolerable, but why edit it? And why focus on Technique and Republic tracks? New Order did make albums before 1989

I bought The Best Of for the two songs I already knew and couldn't get into the rest of it. I almost took it back because I was so disappointed!

It was only when I saw Crystal on TV, downloaded an mp3 and listened to it over and over that I decided to buy Get Ready, and that was more of an impulse, helped by the appearance of Billy Corgan on one song.

I loved Get Ready, and that's what really started me off with New Order, liking more than just a couple of random songs. I don't think I've listened to The Best Of since.

I might still trade it in :p

Some record companies don't seem to get that there is a difference between greatest hits and best of. The Best Of, is defintely not the best of.

So you are saying that BLT, 1963, TPK, TLU, VP, Run2, World, RIAD, or TBTHOG didn't tickle your interest at all to at least listen to the previous albums? But Crystal and GR did?!?

let's not forget that the US & The UK versions of the best of had different track lists! & the blue ? is a slightly different colour on them too

Everyone has a differnt view of what a best of compilation should have. Mine would have more tracks from Movement on it, and it would mostly be album tracks instead of singles... Most 'best of's take to singles that did the best, and maybe two other tracks that the fans really like. Or so I've noticed.

I could never understand why they didn't do a Substance2. Rather than Best Of and International. That way everyone would have to buy both Substance1 and 2. I don't record sales would have delined as whole perhaps even increased. Certainly we wouldn't have 3 compilations doubling up with many of the same songs. I for one have not yet bought International.

Maybe because:

1. Substance was a way to put those non-album 12-inchers on an album, especially CD. Most post-Substance singles exists on CD.
2. Substance II was released in Argentina (1987) with an inverted sleeve (i.e., back -> white, white -> black). The track listing is the same as the 2nd CD of Substance.
