Live Memories

Whilst it is great seeing New Order live ANYTIME, for me nothing compares to the little gigs, hardly advertised.

We'd all turn up sporting what ever Barney was wearing at that time, or with Bermuda Shorts and Hawian Shorts in the kit bag, quick change and down the front ( UP DOWN TURN AROUND ), wondering what they would play. Lights down and it was the chorus of HERE WE GO, HERE WE GO. and it was New Order work out time ( forget the Atkins Diet, I lost pounds in wight at these gigs in weight and out me pockets jumping around ).

45 minutes later hot and sweaty we would plan the next gig.

Happy time, I am sure Holsten Pils and Pernod sales went up at this time.

Best gigs were always the small ones. Bollocks to big venues and open air festivals, get back to the Tower Ballroom, Barney !

Tower Ballroom 83 I was there, what a gig !!!!!!! Barney in Bundesweir vest and they opened with LWTUA.

You are right there Mike...the small gigs were /are so much better. The anticipation/aderenalin rush then all emotions rollede together as they take the stage. Blue lights, no talking..then 45 - 60 mins later you felt like you had been hit by a meteor as they left the stage. The frantically trying to find out when/where the next gig was....just to do it all again. God, this band are on a pedestal all on their own and miles higher than any other.

Can anyone explain the shorts/Hawaian shirts thing? Obviously, I can understand the appeal in terms of trying to stay relatively cool at sweaty gig/dressing up in your team's 'colours', but why this particular combo? Must've looked weird in, say, Sheffield in November????

This was the same as turning up in your team's colours - some people always wore the same garb to gig as a kind of identity. ATR used to take Ian the inflatable skeleton along, Mike used to have these shorts..... me, I used to wear the 84 green logo tour t-shirt to every show from then on, it finally dissolved about 18 months ago after 17 years of sterling service. Did wear a trenchcoat to one gig (Oxford 86) and had the piss took by these kids who'd never seen the band before. It was raining outside, that was my defence !

lots of great memories. we must sort out the meet to swap tales. rose and crown is best for me..but i work strange hours.

n.b dont even think about wearing those shorts..i am al middle aged now and sensible ( sort of )

Must confess to having a bright yellow cardigan (influenced by the Tube appearance) and wore it to the Tower Ballroom in 86. Also lost one of my slip on shoes during sunrise. Found it at the end mind :)

I too had the blue beach shoes and tank top

I had the highlighted hair Unfortunately the first time I had it done (with that bloody cap on) I had hedghog spots at the back of my head.

Also had a Fred Perry T-Shirt influenced by the Switch appearence.

Come to think about it , my entire wardrobe was influenced by Barney

Funniest New Order fan moment for me was being at a Villa game at Derby in the 1988/89 season. Very hot day, most people with no tops on and two lads in front of me had New Order tattoos. The one had "The Perfect Kiss" and the other "Bizare Love Triangle". spot the mistake

Lost one shoe at G-MEX 88(i think)and then once re-united retired to the side of the band on the right-hand side ... seated area.After that never went down to the front again that night!

I just love the small gigs having been to 2. The first one we were almost close enough to get hit in head by Mr Hook's base. You can usually get right up the front no probs. Well we also managed to do that at the Big Day out with 50000 other people. I guess that's another reason why I love the Order you can real close to your favourite band without spending hundereds of dollars.

haceinda gigs were always good for a laff. best one for me was just before pcl came out and they opened with your silent face. utterly awsome ,ill always remember the crowd going absolutley mental when they came on stage and the opening bars of YSF kicked in.

Yep, small ones were the best - going to pretty small provincial towns (Hemel Hempstead, Slough, etc) and seeing them playing in what were probably sports centres (Warrington), and then all the fun of doing double-headers that were in different places entirely (Bradford / Warrington, London / Slough, Birmingham / Swansea).

And don't even get me started on different set lists each night.....
