Not for sound quality it doesn't - I play three of them, and much prefer the Piano 25 or 27 to any of the tubular ones. Best one I have is acually a soprano Bontempi kids one, much superior sound.

in case anyone is interested, i recently bought the best Augustus Pablo album. Valley of Jehosophat. Sounds like an old dread reflecting on a long life with long shadows in the setting sun. All filtered through the melodica. Gorgeous, uplifting and reflective.

Augustus Pablo's first melodica ? 
Barney played it at school, it was the only instrument he knew. Ian liked the use of the Melodica from his Caribbean records, and it was a natural progression that the band were beginning to incorporate it at the very end. It was always Barney's melodica though, Ian wasn't an exponent.

I think so - there was a piccy of it and a write-up from that magazine out earlier on this year (can't remember name), but it was an A5 magazine!

Aye, that'll be the first of the "Jack" NO special, Barney said the green 'un was Ian's, and said he loved the look of it, but doesn't use it now 'cos the keys always jam.
Just quoting Bernard and Peter, Jack magazine, January 2003.
Barney: It's a lovely colour, unfortunately they're not the best ones as the keys jam, they just look the best. The melodica we inherited from Ian. He was an Augustus Pablo fan and introduced it to us.Hooky: He used it on "In A Lonely Place" with us just before he died.
And there was me thinking that we all knew by now that if they say something in the media, the chances are that it is a wind-up and is almost certainly not true.
Trust me, there is a big difference between being a fan of an instrument or a style of music and being able to play it. There is very little chance that Ian was able to play IALP in that way for that demo - nowhere is there any reference to him learning to play it, and they don't just play themselves, there are breathing control issues here for a start ! It's not the easiest thing to perfect, and certainly not something you can pick up and play properly instantly. When you watch Barney play it, you can see that he can play it easily, and could back in 1981. The legacy of learning to play it at school I guess.
