self-explanatory. a sister thread to the dancing one. And I'm saying in their respective times, since obviously Ian isn't much of a singer anymore. :p

barney, he sucked but then he learned a little. ian never learned and always sung out of tune. there´re many people that don´t give a f**k about singing out of tune. i do. 
ian in my opinion could not sing at all but he had emotion, thats what made his voice so wonderful. bernard can sing but ill choose ian over him because i never got that feeling where the hair stands up on the back of your neck listening to bernard. listening to ian sing dead souls live on disc 4 of heart and soul still gives me the chills whenever i think about how great it was.
Another vote for Barney. Ian used to have a more powerful voice, but he never actually learned how to sing. Bernard did.

I've always found Barney more articulate and his voice has a smoother quality than Ian's. Barney's would've been out of place with JD's sound, and it still is when NO does JD songs, but after listening to Barney on 316, I'd rather listen to him.

Although I prefer Barney's style, I have to vote for Ian as he was the better singer. If you listen to some earlier productions of Bernard, he was awful. Ian does shine through on certain tracks such as Transmission and She's Lost Control. Barney gives it a good go, but he has a limited range.

well, in fact here there´re more JD fans than NO so i don´t know....
I had to go with Ian, was listening JD Substance last night and 'Dead Souls' never ceases to blow me away time and time again, man what an amazingly powerful voice. Of course I love Barney's voice too but Ian's was just so haunting and intense. The 2 vocal styles are worlds apart and perfectly suited to their respective genres so it really does boil down to personal preference I guess... 
A lot of the examples of Barney not being able to sing all come down to the band's naivete at times. When they first started, they were awful until they realised that in order for Ian to be able to sing to his best advantage, they needed to be playing in certain keys. Even then, he needed artificial enhancement at all times. All JD songs only use the white notes, so the longstanding rumour went.
After Ian's death, the band carried on only using the white notes even though it didn't suit Barney's natural voice. It wasn't until around the end of 1985 until they started pitching songs in a key that Barney could sing, and he subsequently became a much better singer. Some of the stuff he did with Electronic is actually quite good from a vocal perspective, as he has become more aware of how to sing and how to use his voice as an instrument.
I guess it is all called evolution - who is to say what would have happened to Ian's voice as the band's music developed, if he had survived ?

Did they originally use a distorting thing like the Varispeed for Barney's voice also? So he could sing lower on Movement, for example?

Good question. You may be right here, there could be some evidence on Taras Shevchenko where he struggles with the vocal range.

Barney. I've always felt and said that Barney was the better singer and Ian had the better lyrics.
Chooseing Ian Or Berney is like Chooseing from ice and Fire Fire as in Berney- More Pop, dance, happyness, He could sing
Ice-Cold Dark lyrics, Never could sing, but had alot of emtion
Overall- There voices are so different that its saying who do u perfer Ian Or Berney?
