I need some further information for the project I am working on.

  1. What year did PH marry Mrs Merton?

  2. What was the name of the tall, slim, dark haired chick who roadied for him on the Technique tour? (She was also at the Cambridge Revenge gig)

  3. Does anyone have any photographs of the NO show in Portsmouth in 1984 (especially Barney on stage)?

  4. Can anyone give me the name of the guy who promoted the same tour which started in Sunderland and ended at Heaven?

  5. Can anyone give me the surname of DECLAN who used to promote certain shows in the early 1980's.

  6. Does anyone here have contact details of anyone who used to be in the STOCKHOLM MONSTERS? (I got to know the drummer quite well on the USA 1989 Technique tour and he later worked for Revenge but I have failed in my attempts to contact him 14 years later)

Many more to come but I would appreciate some help!

Cheers. DM

Am pretty sure it was sometime in 1994, possibly 1993. It was definitely after Miss Aherne was famous (the interviews with Hooky in Mick Middles' book are from 1995, and they'd been married for a wee while by then.)

As for Stockholm Monsters, it might be worth contacting James Nice from LTM (the label having fairly recently reissued a few of their albums), as I'd imagine he'd have been in touch.

I'll leave the rest of the questions to the usual suspects who are more knowledgeable than I when it comes to NO...

The 84 tour was promoted by Final Solution Music, although I don't know the name of any individual involved.

EDIT

Stockholm Monsters can be contacted thus: tony@stockholm-monsters.freeserve.co.uk

Cheers for the info. I was already aware of the general name of the promotors as I have it on the Access All Areas pass I have. I have already explored the company I cannot find them. I was selling the posters from St Austell onwards (hence the Laminate) and I used to chat the 'main man' on a regular basis before and after the shows. I sincerley hope that this issue is not a dead end as 10 minutes with this chap would help me on my quest big time.

Before I approach the email is the Tony in question TONY FRANCE? as I had the opportunity of spending a few days in his company when we were 'friends' with the Strugnell sisters who had moved up from Plymouth to Maidstone in 1984. The girls were truly hardcore and were basically everywhere I used to be in the glory days including Germany in the same year. The last I heard of 'Kim' was later that year when she was lined up to be married and I lost touch. She had some amazing stories including a specacular one which occured after the Heaven show and had elements of 'Hook' and 'Pils'. Speaking of Dave Pils is he still on the Stockcar racing scene in the UK?

Anyway, there is a significant story relating to the Stockholm Monsters and an ex-boyfriend of one of them and my reason for wanting to contact the band is related to this. It was a little 'raw' at the time so hopefully now I will be able to approach the issue with a little more perspective and clarity.

I'm assuming it's Tony France. I got that address off http://www.stockholm-monsters.freeserve.co.uk.

Without digressing too much, I passed a car crash on the way home from that Portsmouth gig, and I gather you were involved! My then girlfriend's brother had picked us up, showing off because he'd just passed his test. The combination of never having driven in the dark before and seeing that twisted metal meant he never got above thirty all the way back!!

This girl, right?

Her name is Jane and she also became Hooky's girlfriend. I have another magazine with a Revenge article and I recall they say what's her family name as well, I'm sure it's here somewhere but I haven't found it. :(

That's what I assumed until I noticed the very similar design to the The Wake official site http://www.thewake.freeserve.co.uk/and it's email contact was tony@thewake.freeserve.co.uk.

Incidently, the SM site has a where are they now section which may help locate the drummer. Unfortunately before I noticed this I'd already told SM Tony how good I thought they were at the Hull Adelphi club (turnout - 7 people)

Good call on the name of the bass roadie and thanks for the photo. It sure brings back some memories of all those gigs here in north America. I can still remember Hooky and her them pulling up to the Santa Barbara show in 1989 in a yellow convertible Corvette. Very smart.

I was in a car behind the crash incident on the way back from Pompey and the whole episode seems surreal thinking back. Awful stuff.

The project I am working on is primarily based upon the USA 1989 tour but find myself digressing backwards. The basic reason for this is to add depth to some of amazing stuff I experiences I was afforded to see, hear, drink and on more than one occasion, sniff.

I can remember one evening after the gig in Phoenix when the call was to make my way to the venue for the aftershow party. It was never tough to get pretty much anything during the whole experience with an access all areas pass together with an English accent.

I took a ride with a couple of guys I met backstage and within no time at all we were in side. The place was on the large side with lots of smaller rooms to disappear into.

The beauty of 'being with the band' (thanks once again Rob RIP) was that drinks in those places were ALWAYS free. On this occasion it was a courtesy of an ultra-violet design on the face of my right hand. So every time I went to the bar all I needed to do was to say hi with my right hand and anything was mine. You could say it was YET ANOTHER Melonball experience and from drink 1 it was very much that.

There were also other 'substances' which were also laid on at the wave of a finger and that night at Phoenix was no exception!

By the time it 1AM I was nothing less than bolloxed and found myself in one of the back rooms sitting and chatting with Barney. He knew full well that I was well and truly cained and I can remember him laughing as he asked me how I was getting on.

By far the funniest aspects of the evening however had to be when the autograph hunters found us and started asking for autographs. Most of the Americans did not seemed too bothered to sit and chat with him so once they had grabbed their squiggle from Barney I anticipated them leaving but several of them would not quit until they had MY autograph as well! I told them quite clearly that I was NOT in the band but they were quite insistent that I sign their 'Technique' and 'Substance' album covers! Quite amazing. So somewhere out there in the Arizona area there are several album covers with my autograph on them no doubt reducing their Ebay value by about 99%.

Plenty more where that came from!

I hereby christen Al Jarvis 'PI' as he has only gone and found one of the girls I was looking for from 1984! She had short, bleached blonde hair in those days and Kim Strugnell was her name and for a period she was in a relationship with Tony France from the Stockholms. Although her, her sister and a couple of friends lived in Plymouth you would see them everywhere and there is one particular story from a show up in Scotland at Stirling which always makes me chuckle. Finding her is a treat as it means I do not need to pursue the Stockholm Monsters for the information I am looking for. Now I have found her I live in hope that I can get hold of her sister. Now, she HAS some stories I can tell you!

Al Jarvis PI you are a star.

Nice one. Did you drop her a line?!

There is no direct email address for her or indeed a specific location where she may actually be.

What I have done is sent a variety of emails with kimstrugnell@ and kim_strugnell@ her company etc. Hopefully one should hit the mark and get through to her. I will obviously let you know what occurs.

I can remember funny incident which initially occured at th Bradford gig in early 1984....I first met them on the trip to Frankfurt later that year and it was really quite bizarre when they pulled out a photo they had taken at the gig and it was taken at an angle that ONLY had me and the band in it! Really quite extraordinary when you consider the chances of that happening and of course us actually meeting up! I was rather keen in those days and used to do all I could to get down the front.

I know her and her gang used to take a ton of shots at every gig they went to so fingers crossed she still has access to them.

I should gather some of your stories David to put online here...

Those you have written, with planes and everything.. they sure were fun to read...

Would be a good snippet!

Sure thing, it's entertaining.. that's the kind of thing I'd wish I have done, but of course I didn't ;)

Contact has been made with both Karen and Kim and although they do not have any photographs first hand they are I believe still in contact with their bloke mate who was extra busy with his camera during the first part of the 1980s.

Fingers crossed he will have that elusive Bernard Sumner on stage at the Portsmouth Guildhall 1984 photograph I so long for. Again, if anyone here has one please let me know.

There are a couple of other chaps which I am keen to locate. They were brothers and came from the Hedge End area of Southampton and were at many a show during the same period. I believe the last time I saw them was at The Zap club in Brighton for the Revenge gig in 1989. One of the brothers was in the ilk of David Byrne and they were at the Factory show at The Riverside Studios with Quango and 52nd Street in 1984? I know for a fact that these guys had some serious recordings and photographs so to find them would be a big plus.

I got stoned for the first time in about 20 years last night and to say the experience was surreal is an understatement! How I made my way back in the motor up from Palm is anyones business. DM

There was a few Southampton fans who did New Order, so I presume they were from the area itself? Not brothers though: Jon Mawhinney, who doesn't look too dissimilar to your good self, a lad called Gary Wake, then a guy called Lawrie who's since passed away.

An out and out Saints fan which I do remember was quite a small chap with the classic east Midlands Bum Fluff Tash. I am pretty sure I first met him during the trip to Frankfurt and was at quite a few gigs all over the UK afterwards. He was also at one or two Stockholm Monsters shows in London (yep, I hold my hands up to those)

Speaking of the Frankfurt trip does anyone remember (or indeed know) two blokes from the Windsor/Slough area who had upper arm NO tats? I can also remember a lad from Slough called Shane who looked like he grew his hair for a living....or a laugh. He was always in the company of his mate Steve and I never did truly thank them for the lift to Margate in 1984.

Why do you take offence at being born in the east Midlands?

Ah yes Notts Palais. Like something from Moulin Rouge if I remember correctly, and the venue was pretty much the same. One hell of a heave-ho when NO came on.

The gig was part of a 3 leg 'mini-tour' which initially took in Birmingham and eventually Bristol and my Y reg Astra was more than suitable for me and John Marsh (soon of the Beloved) but you never see any lyrics with reference to the event do you? If one can not get inspiried by the interior of one of those then what the hell else is there?

An excellent 3 legger and a prelude to the Sunderland to Heaven tour which came a few months later in August

New Order in 1984 were the Super Supreme of bands and I hardly missed a gig that year.

Cheers for the info Al. She was one sexy minx and I can see what PH saw in her. They were always together when he was not on stage. I did chat with her briefly at one of the clubs after the Dallas gig.

The build up to the show started around 4 days earlier when I met up with a guy called Rob O'Neill who was (is?) one of the top DJ's in Houston backstage at the show at Astroworld.

I was invited back for an after show party and ended up staying a week! A majority of his friends were on the zany/crazy side of the fence so I fitted in perfectly in those days although once the party ended I put myself in a rather embarrassing position.

While I was at the party I noticed this right fit looking bird and I was flirting ridiculously with her and I was delighted when Rob informed me that she would also be staying the night as she had drank too much and was not in a fit state to drive home.

She of course got the floor and I got the settee (A gentleman to end here!) and we once the lights were out we started what I believed was the 'build up' to a prime sweating session.

After around 15 minutes I heard what I believed was the standard 'come on' but I could not have been more wrong. When she stated that she was 'chilly' on the floor I did the decent thing and suggested that I could join her and warm her up. There was a moment’s silence before she responded.

"I would be no good to you. I'm a lesbian".

Talk about a conversation stopper!

Tiredness immediately set in of course and I was quickly pretending to be asleep.

Over the next few days I was introduced to a number of Robs friends and I actually had TRUE FAITH dedicated to me live on his show. I did have the occasion recorded but like so much of my stuff seems to have gone missing. Bugger.

On the day of the Dallas show I was informed that Toni (Robs house mate) and a girl (Karen, although she liked to be known as Kay-Ren) would be driving down to the show but before we left Rob decided on a Barbe and festivities began once again and it was certainly the first time I had seem people sniffing lines of cokes as they were scoffing chicken wings!

By the time I managed to focus on the hands of my watch time was getting on so I told Toni that we really should hit the road.

We really had to give it some to arrive at the gig on time so Karen put her foot down and we were all anxious not to get caught by the Texas traffic cops. We were right to be concerned because just as we hit the 50-mile boundary of our destination I can remember being blinded by flashing lights reflecting off the rear view mirror and yes it was the police.

I was not too sure about the others but I was not in a fit state but what I can remember is what happened when he first bent over and looked through the open window of the car. I was giggling like a school kid and when he enquired about how I was Karen simply replied "Oh, he's English", as if it explained EVERYTHING. Whatever it did it did the trick and after a firm talking to Karen got us back on our way and back on track to the gig.

The venue was not hard to find, as it was smack right in the middle of an Amusement Park similar to the others to band played such as Atlanta (with Jon Scott who was obviously impressed with speaking with me for the first time 14 years later as I have not heard from him since)....and indeed Houston.

We arrived about half way through the first track although the actual gig itself was much a blur (not that the powder mad any difference, try watching NO almost every night for two months with a similar track listing) but the aftershow entertainment would prove to be a great deal more spectacular.

After the gig we were told to head downtown to a bar/club where the usual 'meet and greet' stuff would be taking place. Rob Gretton was in his usual top class form as he invited my friends and I into the VIP area.

It was not the largest room in the world but it was really rather smart with a FREE bar in one corner and comfy seating areas together with television screens all the way around it. The 'Round & Round' video was playing as we entered and it did not take too long before we were on Melon balls again and boy do those things mix well will illegal substances.

The evening was enhanced further as I started chatting with the local dealer who just happened to be handing out anything they wanted to everyone who wanted it obviously on the instructions of the owner and/or promoter.

Disco Biscuits were the order for the evening and before you knew it I was on cloud 67 and most certainly in that 'loved up' frame of mind.

'Time to mingle me thinks' I said to myself, but boy was the first person I spoke with a tester as to how effective the pills were. Terry Mason, like a 20 stone Paul Calf with a quarter of the brains. The bane of any long term NO fan that could not get into a sold out gig but what I believed used to piss him off the most was that he was basically Rob Grettons monkey.

You could beg Terry for hours for him to get you in with no luck but just one request from the magnificent Rob would get you what you wanted, and whom would he get to stick you on the guest list? Kind of rubbed the salt in every time. Shame that.

Anyway, I thought after several years this would be an appropriate moment to put all that stuff under the bridge but he was having none of it. Bear in mind that I was probably 2 stone lighter then and more than likely drooling as a consequence of the earlier endeavours.

"Just keep out of my face" (Every time I get to see Coronation Street and I see Les Battersby I think of that moment!)

Just after he went the other direction with his teeth griding Barney popped out from nowhere and told me not to worry about him as he was always grumpy because he never got his leg over! Sumner also asked me to write down my name again on a piece of paper and he would ensure that I was on every guest list (This was prior to Rob and Andy landing me the Laminate Access All Areas which Terry was obviously delighted to see and I was to play my trump card on the plonker on the very last date in New York!)

I then found myself in deep conversation with Barney and just as we sat down the local radio station shoved a microphone in his face and asked him to say "Hi. This is Bernard Sumner from New Order, and you are listening to.…”

Of course he kept ballsing it up much to the delight and amusement of Hooky who was sitting the other side of Barney.

The evening then moved onto a warehouse club, which was owned by the same guy Paul who owned the previous venue. (It was apparently used for the opening sequence of the original Robocop when the got his arm ripped off)

I was well up for a wiggle and I danced until the dark turned to light and I can remember chatting with the Shan (drummer roadie, ex-Stockholm Monsters and who has gone to greater things) and from what I can remember he was pretty much out of it also.

Another interesting episode of the evening was when the DJ stopped the proceedings to ask someone to stop whistling while the music was playing. Can any of you guess who is was? Yes, it was Barney! He took it like a man though and went back to dancing badly, but NEVER as bad as Steve Morris!

Time for us to depart and by the time we were sitting in the car drinking bottled beer making our way to Waco to see Tonis family it was getting on for 6.30AM and what I needed was a good rest after all the recent activity. Thankfully what laid ahead was top draw stuff as after breakfast at his Mothers we made the short journey to his brothers who had a nice sized house and huge swimming pool.

"We'll hang here for the day Dave and get back on the road early evening." Lovely.

After a more than refreshing swim I snuggled into one of the comfortable sunning beds by the side of the pool and slept like a baby all day.

By the time I woke I was in the need for some serious grub so I was obviously delighted when Toni announced that his sister in law had prepared a delicious buffet meal for us all.

I had never heard of Waco before that visit. Later it was to be infamous thanks to David Koresh.

It was a slower less intense drive back to Houston but we headed straight into yet another crazy night with the gang before the flight for the next show in Arizona. You already have the lowdown on the party antics after the Phoenix show!

I have always enjoyed some fabulous times in Texas, from Austin, to Houston, to Dallas but it very true that the local people have an element of mistrust with the traffic cops.

I am happy to hear that you enjoy the documentation of my experience following NO. I have to thank the people of this site for opening the door on this most superb period of my long life. A career, relocation to another country and an eventual family kind of tucked my former years away for a while and I can not relay my joy at meeting all the new friends I have met here especially Al Jarvis who could have easily have split with me at birth such is the similarity in our musical tastes, football teams and of course lack of hair.

It has also be great looking back to the unique perspective I had associated with New Order who were the love of my musical life between the age of 16 and 25 and I was indeed very fortunate to find myself in the positions I did.

I have been working hard and the excerpts you have seen will one day take their place in a comprehensive diary of my experiences. It will take some time but it will happen but one thing is for sure you will hear about it first.

Thes best thing about so many of these wonderful anecdotes was that we were often there as well, the other side of the fence or stage, and completely oblivious to most things other than the actual show. It's brilliant to read all these memories of gigs gone by, makes up for the years of isolation and missing out on so much. Guess I'll never get the chance to do a US tour now !

An amazing aspect of it also is that so many of us saw so many of the same things at the same gigs (in the UK anyway). I was quite amazed when Alan started telling me a story about a bloke getting a woody off Hooky at a Revenge gig he went to. That was 14 years ago and although we did not know each other at the time we finally did! Just think of all the life experience each of us had gone through in the intrim and here we are now. Amazing.

I am pretty sure that many of us here have been in the same sweaty heaps in the same sweaty venues many a time without obviously knowing it giving it some when the opening rifts of Age of Consent blasted out but the magic is that we know what it was like to be doing what we did 20 years ago and not looking in from the outside.

Kim and I were just chatting about the 1989 tour and she reminded me of an Brit photographer who tagged along on the latter stages of the second stage of the tour (the first time I spoke with him was in Minneapolis) and to the best of our collective knowledge his name was DONALD CHRISTIE. This guy was taking some serious photographs from all angles and in all places and I guess he must have been there in some offical capacity.

Does anyone know of him or how I could contact him?
