Good call on the name of the bass roadie and thanks for the photo. It sure brings back some memories of all those gigs here in north America. I can still remember Hooky and her them pulling up to the Santa Barbara show in 1989 in a yellow convertible Corvette. Very smart.
I was in a car behind the crash incident on the way back from Pompey and the whole episode seems surreal thinking back. Awful stuff.
The project I am working on is primarily based upon the USA 1989 tour but find myself digressing backwards. The basic reason for this is to add depth to some of amazing stuff I experiences I was afforded to see, hear, drink and on more than one occasion, sniff.
I can remember one evening after the gig in Phoenix when the call was to make my way to the venue for the aftershow party. It was never tough to get pretty much anything during the whole experience with an access all areas pass together with an English accent.
I took a ride with a couple of guys I met backstage and within no time at all we were in side. The place was on the large side with lots of smaller rooms to disappear into.
The beauty of 'being with the band' (thanks once again Rob RIP) was that drinks in those places were ALWAYS free. On this occasion it was a courtesy of an ultra-violet design on the face of my right hand. So every time I went to the bar all I needed to do was to say hi with my right hand and anything was mine. You could say it was YET ANOTHER Melonball experience and from drink 1 it was very much that.
There were also other 'substances' which were also laid on at the wave of a finger and that night at Phoenix was no exception!
By the time it 1AM I was nothing less than bolloxed and found myself in one of the back rooms sitting and chatting with Barney. He knew full well that I was well and truly cained and I can remember him laughing as he asked me how I was getting on.
By far the funniest aspects of the evening however had to be when the autograph hunters found us and started asking for autographs. Most of the Americans did not seemed too bothered to sit and chat with him so once they had grabbed their squiggle from Barney I anticipated them leaving but several of them would not quit until they had MY autograph as well! I told them quite clearly that I was NOT in the band but they were quite insistent that I sign their 'Technique' and 'Substance' album covers! Quite amazing. So somewhere out there in the Arizona area there are several album covers with my autograph on them no doubt reducing their Ebay value by about 99%.
Plenty more where that came from!
