Mike, do you remember if this gig was filmed? and did you see Barney falling over the drum kit?

I am not sure if Glastonbury 81 was filmed, but remember Barney fell over several times.

Glastonbury 87 was definately filmed.

I saw them for the first time when I was 18 and again when I was 21.

Probably around 8pm, maybe even earlier than that. Outdoors in the early evening can be deceptive when you are having a good time.

al...where did they do the 2am kick off ?? i have seen them come on really late. (leeds,sheff and fac51 ) but never as late as 2am. good effort sir.

Late starts

I remember seeing System 7 , in a bicycle powered stage at Glastonbury, they were billed to start at midnight, but because of problems with their MAC came on at 4.00am.

Also saw em at Stratford Rex theatre at 4.30am, after Eat Static at 2.30am.

First gig was Royal Festival Hall 14 May 1984

Latest showtime was I think WOMAD in July 85, when they came on about 1am after a really long delay. And despite the time of year, it was freezing.

At the risk of sounding a right old woman, very late gigs are OK at festivals, but when they're one-offs and you have to travel back after they are a real pain - not that many venues / councils allow shows to go on late now anyway. For example, leaving Radiohead the week before last at the respectable enough time of 10.40 still meant not getting in before 1am!

Suppose that's what happens when you live in the sticks!

I saw them just after they became New Order in the Brighton Art College Basement. They were dire.

March 10th 1982 at Hull Tower Cinema, they did a 25 minute version of Ultraviolence as an encore(following a set just over the same length). One-by-one they disappeared (as did the audience)until there was nothing left but the drum machine - my how we laughed. At the end there were about 10 people left, despite this I thought they were awesome.

The local press, however, (I must scan this sometime from my yellowing page of the Hull Daily Mail) wrote it up with the heading 'Group's unique encore no joke for fans', described them as 'self-important', 'bleak' 'pretentious, noisy and generally boring', 'bleak [again] loud and depressing'.... finishing with 'some joke'.

Hi guys - my first baptism came from experiencing them at Paradise Garage in New York in the summer of 1983 - bloody stifling hot it was too. I recall being simultaneously enthralled and offended by New Order's obnoxious attitude to their fans that night - they were being really shitty to the audience and even changed the words of "Blue Monday" to sing "How does it feel to play infront of c***s like you" or something. But later on, when I looked back at this gig I found it really funny. Some of the audience were utterly pissed at them and were demanding their money back, the buttfucks!! But me, I was converted! IT was kinda like a religious experience for me - albeit one that was pretty sordid I guess, ha ha...

I wore this dumb t-shirt at the gig that read "Kathy Angel" across the chest and a friend of mine told me that he thought he saw me with it in the footage of the club that featured in the "Confusion" video, but i'm not so sure about that, as I've tried to look for it and ain't seen anything....
