Perfect kiss video

This has probably been answered before, but is NO miming in the Perfect Kiss video or are they actually playing? The version sounds slightly different than the 12" and substance versions, with more guitar and more synths, so I was wondering if they were actually playing in the video.

...never seen the video, but the might have played live, 'cause of that live take, recording on the 5th retro cd...

If I remember correctly, isn't there a clap or snare hit out of sync (a 16th note or so) on the Retro video version? Drive me insane everytime I hear it... might be why I haven't listened to it in a while.

The version may be different, but the *music* is the same. Like you, I initially thought it was, but was encouraged to listen closely to the versions, and have come to the conclusion it's all from the same take.

I'll excerpt from a post I made to the old Ceremony mailing list:

"The difference in timing then would just be the result of the video version not including all the extraneous speaking before and after. However, the Substance version fades out the final 'extra' guitar strum and they seem to mix Barney (especially the cowbell, more cowbell!) down in the Retro [version]".

Instead of "version" in my message, I said "remastering", but for all I know, they just took the recording from the reels as-is.

There's also the a promo 12" that first appeared on Qwest PRO-A-2342. As best as I can remember, it has one or several pretty rough internal edits that takes out a good chunk of the song, probably for the purpose of either making the video more likely to be aired (taking it down from nine minutes to five) and excising Barney's reference to masturbation.

I'm fairly sure they are different takes, I expect they probably ran through it several times before settling on the best one to use.

They are different takes.

Barney chose that version for Retro Bonus CD because he liked it best than the one chose by Jonathan Demme for the video. This has been discussed here A LOT when Retro was released.

Hear them again, they are VERY different. A good reference is Hooky's solo in the beginning/ending. His timing is somehow different on each version.

Yes, I know I must sound like a moron for asking this, especially when the versions sound totally different. But, I've seen online a video version in which the audio file and the visuals didn't seem to line up. I just downloaded the video off Kazaa, and they lined up nicely. Now, with their last performance on TOTP - obviously mimed - I just questioned whether or not they actually performed the song for the video or just mimed for it.

Okay, I'm listening to this yet again, and now I see differences in some of Bernard's parts. Could there have been punch-ins to correct him being out of tune or bum notes? But I'm open to correction, and at some point I really should delve into the Retro discussion to see what other differences there are.

no amount of punch-ins could have salvaged that butcher job Bernard did on the vocals. it's similar to a dog's whimpering howl when it's needing attention. that said, i love the live video version. the video is great and the audio is damn fine with the one exception being Bernard (as usual).

I've listened to that track a lot - different versions - and they are definitely playing that track live for the video. It is a little different from every other version I have heard/seen.

I thought that was what J.D. wanted.
