If you had a time machine ....

....which 2 New Order gigs would you want to be transported back to, and why, since a few of us have been talking about time machines recently! They should be; i) a gig you were at, and ii) a gig you wish you were at. For me it’s:

i) RFH 5/84. Obvious really. M1/TPK and Decades. Wish there was a video of it.

ii) The Beach 7/80. Again, obvious really. Wish there was a boot of it. Guess this'll be most people's answer, but let's see. Caley Palais 2/85 runs it close for me as it sounds like they were so "on" that night.

i, Leeds Tiffany's 85. Was there but had a shitty time videoing it through an eye of a needle. Would love to be at that one again and just enjoy it this time. Cracking showcase of Low-Life material.

ii, Berlin 5/81. Loved the bleak looking video of New Order playing ferociously and Barney in a trance like state. They sounded fantastic

M1/TPK and especially Decades in the latter stages of the RFH were two of the finest performance NO ever put in IMO but to go back would spoil the occasion for me personally. The uniqueness of the whole experience as a geeky 18 year old. I must have listened to a copy of the tape I recorded at the show 100 times (if you can hear Jon Marsh from the Beloved saying 'Temptation coming up' you have a copy..).

I know I've mentioned them already tonight, but the time machine would take me back to Edgbaston 1986, the fake plastic trees and the best ever gig (According to Gillian), followed by the next night at Malvern, 24 different songs played in two nights, Sister Ray with the Mondays, 8 miles from home, fabulous, no other word comes close.

Haven't seen the band yet, so I'll go with Joy Division, since I'd want to see them so much more.

Jan. 11, 1980----Paradiso, Amsterdam

and either Jan. 15, 1980----The Basement, Cologne or May 2, 1980----High Hall, Birmingham or Jan. 17, 1980----Plan K, Brussels or both shows on April 4th in London

December 18, 1979 - Les Bains Douches

Jan. 11, 1980 - Paradiso, two shows for the price of one

September ?, 1980 - any of the early NO gigs over here, really.

November 18, 1981 - Taras Shev. I'd be yelling my ass off for "Temptation", mess with the band.

May 9?, 1983 - The first re-airing of some JD material (I believe it was the ninth, but don't know for sure)

May, 1985 - Tokyo (PFD)

1987 - Glastonbury (the "New Order Live" BBC disc)

1998 - Reading. Say no more!

Glastonbury 81 ( i was there ), what a gig and Amsterdam 84 looked liked a good one.

I was at the Caley Palais gig Feb 85. It was my first NO gig and it was a stormer! Mostly new stuff (Lowlife) with a few cracking oldies thrown in. The crowd were good that night, and I wasn't pissed off - I rather liked NOs couldnt give a fuck attitude.

Given a tardis, that would be my gig to revisit. Would also have loved to have seen them during a sublime 1980/81 gig showcasing Movement/IALP/ etc and some of the the then up and coming stuff, the gig described by Solitude sounded sublime, classic early NO on the cusp of greatness.

1. Tower Ballroom 1986 (obviously) - too young to appreciate it at the time (16).

2. Apollo 1998 - after thinking they'd gone for good.

1..i would like the time machine to take me back to the hacienda double header...simply the best new order day/night in my life..as long as the time machines got a comfy bed in the back.

2..missed gigs..rah and donny rotters i should have been there but transport fecked up. i wouldnt of minded slipping in jarvos suitcase and gone for a trip round australia..melbourne metro sounded like a back to the good old days venue.

n.b..tim..b-ham and malvern were fantastic and if i was allowed 2 trips:)

Gigs I've been at and would return to

Deeside, Futurama or Liverpool State Ballroom - I was very drunk at this and couldn't remember it at all. However I did get a ticket at the door for the second night that they had to arrange 'cos they'd oversold the first but I couldn't go 'cos I was so hungover.

Gigs I didn't make...Heaven London or Glasto 1981.

ii) The Beach Club 7/80. I would proceed to convince them to let me join the band before Gillian could get her foot in. If the Bastards don't go for it, I could use my knowledge of future events to form my own band or... RULE THE WORLD!

1. Brixton Academy 1987, Norder were always best when competing against the "headliners".
2. Amsterdam 1984 looks good, saw EMF there ten years ago - a great venue. But I'd have to go for the first half of the summer tour 1987. Missed due to Poly exams, saw all the rest - brilliant.

You can't beat those old Odeon-style cinema venues. Pity it closed in 1999, but it is reopening soon as a venue. Looked a bit like this

You can't beat those old Odeon-style cinema venues. Pity it closed in 1999, but it is reopening soon as a venue. Is it? It's some sort of weird church now. I go past it on the way back from Charlton home games and there's usually a 'meeting' going on. That part of London could really do with a live venue again - there used to be 2 or 3 back in the late 70's. Don't s'pose you've got any more cd's of that show have you? I never managed to get hold of a recording at the time and I remember it as a pretty good performance - all I managed to get were a handfull of 'souvenir' used tickets and a gig poster that were lying around in the foyer!

I'll sort it out - will bring them to the official pissup on Friday 2nd Jan (wherever Peter sorts it out to be) or can post it if you prefer.

I'm gonna be in the Yorkshire Dales over New Year so unfortunately won't be able to make the official pissup. I can post you a blank cd-r or 3 to cover you time/effort and you can have a souvenir ticket if you're into that sort of thing!

Yup, still got the poster - it's pretty cheap looking isn't it? Can't imagine it being sold for huge amounts on eBay! The tickets actually look more expensive to produce than the poster... You still didn't beat us when you scored those 4 goals!!! You should've done tho'...everyone else does who we play in that cup (whatever it's called these days)...Oxford last year, Stoke, Bournemouth and I'm pretty sure a few other so-called minnows have knocked us out in the last few years, not to mention Walsall in the FA Cup last year, and scraping through against Blackpool and Dagenham and Redbridge (the latter after a replay!). I'd like to blame it on the weakened teams we field in cup competitions but unfortunately we were at full strength on each occasion!

Here's the Coronet planning permission article. Looks as though the New Wine Church bought it after this article and renamed it Gateway House, and as such it is unlikely to become a gig venue again ! There's some good old photos of the inside on their website.

New Wine Church! The name had temporarily escaped me but now you mention it, it's all come flooding back! It seems to be a very popular place to go at around 5:30 on a Saturday evening as there's always plenty of people there whenever we drive past it after a match. I can certainly imagine them all happily clapping along inside, tho' it's sad to see how much of that area has fallen into decay over the last 25 years or so.
