Weeding Question

Is there any perceieved "code" about who a weeded gig goes to? I mean, should unknown users be avoided. I only ask as the copy of Kilkenny I sent to someone I'd never heard of hasn't been offered up for further copies.

Despite having used the "service" a couple of times, I'm getting a little uneasy about it. I'd hate to see this site go under or much less for anyone to profit by selling them on.

I had a request the other day from someone I don't know. I thought about raising the exact same question. However, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. If he fails to put it up for weeding I'll make sure everyone knows who he is.

I feel that this weeding thing should be strictly reserved to the NOOL-community, and anyone who claims a disc and then does not offer to pass it on to two others, should be put on a public black list and shouldn't receive any more discs.

I haven't had any problems yet. I would limit weeding to NOOL members only though. There was a similar problem at DNE recenly, wasn't it ?

Well, so far, nobody has made any profit of this (as far as I can tell), and as long as we continue sharing the recordings for nowt, there's no need for any well-informed NO fan (i.e., who knows about this site) to buy them at ridiculous prizes off Ebay and the like, is there? Or I am being too naive?

The person that approached me may well be a NOOL member, but one that doesn't use his own name therefore I didn't recognise him ?!?! We can't know them all.

What I would like to see is that the requester also adds a post to the forum that they have in fact asked for a copy. Then it's there for all to see. This person has promised me a post when he receives the disc but that may of course never happen...

just noticed that my mystery guy has posted on the thread promising to continue the weed. Not much information on him but I've got his address so I'll know where to find him ... :D

Jan, it won't be the well-informed fans that will be buying these discs though. There's always people out to make a quick profit and they'll find buyers as well. We'll have to find a way to safeguard the true intention of the weeding. Put your thinking caps on guys.

Clive, mail me the details, I could not find any on the thread in question. It would help if each person that weeds these gigs to two others can take it upon themselves to see that the two takers re-weed them subsequently. Perhaps a gentle hint at first such as 'hey dick, did you get the disc that I sent you a month ago?'

Geri, I know Simon to be a top bloke and when he returns from his X-Mas break, he will re-weed that particular gig (once recieved of course) There is bound to be 'new' people asking for these gigs but we can only assume that they will play the game. I guess that manu of these newbies have been 'lurking' for quite a while before posting their first message, I was quite a lurker myself.:)

fair point about the lurking, done it myself as well. It's because he didn't post anything that I had my doubts but he has now and all would have been well if it hadn't been for Spotnick hiding the whole fucking lot so now Simon won't be able to continue the weed ...

The basic problem with the weeding was that it was getting out of hand - quite a few people were requesting copies and not sending them on as per the instructions, and we all know that these copies will end up on Ebay pretty soon, which will create all kinds of problems - it happened with DreamsNeverEnd.com.....

I know that it is pretty common and widespread, but the dissemination of live material isn't all that legal, and given Barney's known aversion to live material at the best of times, to have a site such as this actively promoting the sharing of unauthorised live material is only likely to get the band's management sniffing round, and we wouldn't want to lose NOOL.

Why don't people who wish to weed gigs form a Yahoo group to further their ambitions ?

I agree that we wouldn't want to lose NOOL, but if we're really afraid of the band's management, then we might as well go ahead and forbid the posting of trading lists & requests of audio CD-Rs and home-made DVD-Rs on the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum - not to mention the discussion (with matching mp3-files) of soundboard recordings of mystery '85 gigs in the Digital Republic.

And as for the weeding per se: mostly, it was just a little circle of NOOL regulars who were swapping all these great recordings among themselves. The last couple of days, a few lurkers had begun emerging from the shadows, but isn't that how we all have started in these parts?

I was just wondering if someone could explain the concept of weeding to me (and why it's called what it is!) I've seen lots of references to it, but don't think I've quite got it. Thankx in advance!

So the band's management is very active in harassing sites where people swap music, why aren't they so active in arranging concerts or releasing material from the back catalogue, I'd gladly buy official versions of the concerts, even more glady experience them first hand.

No, the band's management is not very active in harrassing sites where people swap music at all. One of the band members has on numerous occasions expressed a dislike for people exchanging unauthorised live recordings, primarily because they are often a bit embarrassing.

They don't release live recordings very often as they aren't very good very often !

....but that very band member is far more interested in his boat than sitting in front of a computer
