Just found an interview with Steve Morris from immediately prior to the first show of the tour (WLIR radio, NYC, 1 Aug 85) where he says the tour was scheduled for 13 dates. We know of 13 definites, but there is also a vague listing for Salt Lake City that has never produced any evidence or indeed a recording.
Anyone ?
Tim. I do like your posts! Either interesting/informative or both. I am stuck with this one, as far as I am aware only 13 gigs were played/planned, although maybe Salt Lake City was added once the tour had started?
I'd imagine this must be the norm though? I read Wolfgang Flur's book recently and during Kraftwerk's 1975 tour of the US they were basically just adding gigs left, right and centre whilst the band were over there with multiple offers coming in from all sides of the country. I presume offers must've come in for New Order once people knew they were in the country, so to speak?

Seriously though, the drum beat on Numbers from 1981 was something I could listen to over & over again when I was a nipper. That was sampled for Planet Rock along with the melody of Trans Europe Express. Electro has a lot to answer for! That, and Tour de France.
Can't say I'm a massive fan, per se. Last time they played England in 97 I walked off after 5 songs to see something else (this was at Tribal). The forthcoming gigs are more about the social side than even a New Order gig. Long time since we've all seen one another!
Check out 1991's "The Mix" which is basically them re-recording their analogy sounds into digital. Easy listening for the untutored ear. Then take a listen to The Model and Tour de France singles, then perhaps Computer World for a studio album, one of their more accessible moments. Avoid anything pre-Autobahn though, they're just prog-rock - bad attempts at dance muzak with violins and flutes! They picked up a gear when Bartos and Flur joined around 74 (then dropped back again when said two left around the Mix).
Not a fan of the recent offering particularly. I think Bartos's solo stuff is 'more' Kraftwerky (if that makes sense) than Kraftwerk themselves and people like Anthony Rother perhaps sound more like I'd want a millenium Kraftwerk to sound, with a harder edge.

Spacelab (from Man Machine) is a true classic. That rolling bassline is found in numerous dance/techno tracks these days. The entire Man Machine is a must-have in your music collection. The German version has a nice geek-factor built in :)
The Mix may sound a little dated today. They have a "best of" compilation called The Model, but it seems hard to find.

Even though the Elektric Café album doesn't seem to be a favorite for most Kraftwerk fans, I must confess that I have always loved "The Telephone Call" and "Sex Object".

The Salt Lake City show did, indeed happen on Aug 17, 1985
It took place in a now demolished venue called the Colliseum- nicknamed the Dirt Palace. A rodeo/fair arena.
I wasn't at this gig, but know some who were.

It's worth quoting the Ron Richards account (found on the Waterrat gigography)...if this is to believed, then New Order played this gig in a BARN.
[ "I remember with absolute clarity certain things about this show because I happened to work for the local promoter of this event and was a local college DJ at the time. I had backstage access for the show and I handled the catering and dealt with their special needs.
#1- I was supposed to be at a Saturday Evening class at the University writing a Final term paper for my letter grade and I ditched class, took the "F" for the semester and had a blast doing it.
#2- Bernie didn't say 2 words after the show. The rest of the band were backstage signing autographs for the lucky few who were allowed backstage to meet the band. I remember distinctly that this one girl asked Peter to sign her Mickey Mouse Sweatshirt and he drew a large penis on Mickey and signed his name on the big penis (swear to God!). I was able to get Stephen to accompany me down a long hallway and into an area of shower stalls so that I could get him to record a promo for our local radio station. We chatted briefly about who knows what. Gillian sat at a table & was rambling on about her cats to somebody while Bernie sat in a foldout chair leaned back on 2 legs against the wall with his head staring down at the ground.
#3- The band started 45 minutes late due to the fact that they couldn't find the venue. The venue actually was on the county fairgrounds in a rather rustic old indoor circular barn for indoor animal competitions I guess... The floor was solid hard dirt & was very dusty inside. Peter had a hell of a time with the synthesized drum kit and started banging on it like a madman disregarding certain songs which they happened to be performing. Someone shouted for "Blue Monday during their 1st encore. Peter yelled back at the guy saying that he "could go home & listen to it on (his) record if (he) fancied" & that they were sick of the song. They then broke into Temptation followed by Mesh. The 2nd Encore was "Love Vigilantes". I also do know that during the show they played "State of The Nation", "Perfect Kiss", "Confusion", "This Time Of Night", "Age Of Consent", "Subculture" and several more. The show lasted a good 1 1/4 hours which I didn't expect since they came on late. The DIDN'T play "Thieves Like US" which pissed me off to no end." ]

I wonder, were the 09 Nov 86 Berkeley, 10 Nov 86 SLC, and 11 Nov 86 Boulder show taped? Waterrat doesn't have setlists for any of those shows.

The Salt Lake City venue was located at the Utah State Fairgrounds- the building was the colliseum, and it was, as noted elsewhere, a glorified barn. (This was quite the punk/new wave venue in the '80s- I attended many shows there, including The Psychedelic Furs, Front 242, Suicidal Tendencies, The Fixx, and more)
One friend of mine (who claims to remember everything about this gig, despite the over-consumption of many substances) agrees that 'Lonesome Tonight' was played that night, and confirms that the gig started late, although he can't confirm a full setlist.

And why don't I believe that they played Mesh ? Or did two separate encores (though that is more possible than Mesh !)?

Or maybe he meant Cries And Whispers :-) Not like that had been played live since '83...ooh, look, I spotted another error in the Waterrat listing, which has "Mesh" for C&W for the Vancouver 27 Jun 83 gig...
I find the two encores in Utah less believable than the fact that New Order played some other old song (Denial/Dreams Never End/Chosen Time) and the person just misremembered.
