Correct Set List for Paris 17 April 1982 Gig?

Can someone help me determine what the accurate set list was for this gig?

Both NOOL and Water Rat's site show that only 9 songs were played. I have a recording of this gig that includes 11 songs - the extra two of which are clearly from a different source than the FM broadcast of this gig. Sam's site makes note of these 2 extra songs (ICB and Leave Me Alone) and infers that they may have been played. It seems unlikely that the band played 11 songs at this gig, when most of the other gigs around that time were only 9 songs.

Can someone help determine what songs were played at this gig and what the proper running order was?

Sorry if this was previously discussed a few months ago when the gigographies of the three sites were being compared.

Leave Me Alone and ICB are definitely *not* from this gig.

I believe the setlist to be:

In A Lonely Place, Temptation, Chosen Time, Truth, Hurt, The Village, Denial, Procession, Ceremony

See http://www.new-order.net/no/gigs/nogigs82.html#NO-820417. I have a note about the CD in question.

"The sixth song is "Leave Me Alone", but this sounds like it was taken from an LP, with crackling, so this is likely an interpolation from an unknown performance. Likewise with the last song, which is ICB, and a cracking version too."

http://www.new-order.net/no/gigs will get you my emendations to the WR listing, which I've been making updates to since WR went into hibernation.

I agree. They are clearly from a different source. But in reference to your interpolation comment, can we confirm that these songs were not played at this gig?

What is your source?

Thanks for your help.

Audience recording doesn't have ICB or Leave Me ALone, nor does it have gaps/breaks in the recording.

Thanks Tim. Is Sam's suggested set list above consistent w/ your audience recording?

Not quite.

Temptation/Chosen Time/Truth/Hurt/IALP/The Village/Denial/Procession/Ceremony.

Tim's audience tape matches up with the original NOOL/WR listing, as well as the tracklisting for http://www.worldinmotion.net/neworder/discography/bootlegslp&cd/op/paris1982.htm so it's probably the correct running order, as I have nothing solid for which to dispute it, given that I only have the FM copy on the 11-track CD and a 9-track on C90 which I had mistakenly forgotten wasn't the audience version, which has breaks between most if not all of the tracks. Since I assumed my C90 was the audience version, I mistakenly used that to derive the tracklisting...sorry about that.

Now the question for me is what caused IALP to move around? My speculation is that it wasn't part of the original broadcast (the NO Anthologies Disc 5 MP3 set doesn't include it, for instance), but may have been subsequently rebroadcast, with the "new" track added at the beginning, maybe based on the fact that lots of NO gigs opened with it, or for some other more logical reason.

Up until the Paris gig, IALP appeared in the following position during the gigs in which it was played, so it definitely trends towards being played earlier in the set.

1st, 1st, 1st, 6th, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 1st, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th (terminal), 1st, 8th (terminal), 8th, 10th (terminal), 4th, 1st, 9th, 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 7th, 4th, 4th, 1st, 5th

1st: 14 (compare where it appears last only 3 times) 2nd: 5 3rd: 4 4th: 4 5th: 3 6th: 1 7th: 1 8th: 2 9th: 2 10th: 1

You're not gonna believe this. I just listened to my copy again, and it does have IALP as the first track - not listed on the cover, as it is only the last 40 seconds or so of the track, so I would guess this was the opener after all.

As a matter of fact, earlier this year, over at alt.music.new-order, there was a person who claimed he was at the gig and taped the original broadcast, and he stated that In A Lonely Place was the first track. I'm still kicking myself for not having contact this person for a dub of his tape...

And this is only the first time that I've seen this thread... that's a cracking recording, with a fabulous Temptation, a brilliant Chosen Time and a fantastic opening to Ceremony as the final track!!!

I'll make a couple of calls - should be able to get the full broadcast, as I know someone who recorded it in its entirety. I'll let you know.

So are we now at:

  1. IALP
  2. Temptation
  3. Chosen Time
  4. Truth
  5. Hurt
  6. The Village
  7. Denial
  8. Procession
  9. Ceremony

I have a very good copy of the FM broadcast, that I will be happy to share. You know where to look...

Thanks again for your help.

Heh, I was right after all... that's a first! :jawdrop:

I have a good-sounding FM copy as well, one of each on all the common formats...have to see which one sounds better...I think in this case the CD version does...

My mate's just uploaded it for me, and I now have a copy of the full FM broadcast. Opening track IALP, with talking in French over it for the first 30 seconds or so. Talking consists of telling the audience what the first three tracks will be. IALP is followed by Temptation, no join or split in the recording, so it can reasonably be assumed that Temptation did indeed follow IALP. No joins between Temptation and Chosen Time or Truth, though there may be a split after Truth and before Hurt - some talking in French right at the start of Hurt. No splits in rest of gig, so am fair sure that the set is in correct order.
