Favourite Live Versions from Bootlegs - TEMPTATION

What is your favourite live version of Temptation from a live recording?

Mine is from The Tower Ballroom 9th May 83, great version, I was also there. A close second is from The Spectrum, Montreal 5th July 83 I was not at this one.

They all bore me to be honest. Maybe where they have opened with it, thus leaving the rest of the set to songs I want to hear.

Fair play, I remember em starting with it at the Powerhouse in Brum 84, great choice to start a gig with, straight in amongst it.

That one was probably one of the better ones. I think I've heard it too often now !

You guys are the experts having the lucky birthright to be in proximity of the band. Having only about 20 boots plus whatever vids and live stuff I could purchase I vote for the Taras version. Raw sound, song in the throes of birth. Plus the Denial sounding guitar/bass jam.

Hands down the radio gig from '84 that Muffy sent me about a year ago. Can't remember the exact title for the gig (something BBC Radio-something or another), but the version of Temptation that closes the 5-song show is absolutely my favorite

Taras is also a fair shout, Barney was always pissed back then

well I think you have to have more than one performance of this track as it evolved and changed, I'll go for.....

the new york 81 version (great early improvised version) the riverside tv version (understated and ace) the play at home one at the hacienda (rockin') temptation 98 (great reworking) any version that was part of the '586'/'gone green' segue

.....and probably some others I've forgotten.

The version like the 7' single played up to spring 1982, I prefer that to the 'jamming' at the start that they have stuck with since.

Best one for me was at Newcastle 3/82

Funny, I also really like the Taras version (7th time they played it, I reckon) and esp. the very rough sequenced opening. Also really like Cardiff 1/83 with a real reverberation on the opening sequence.

Yes, that's the one! (I just got it on CD) That is my all-time fave version!

Yes, that's the one! (I just got it on CD) That is my all-time fave version!

I think he was actually introducing IALP, but the intro got transposed onto Temptation instead...

the one from reading 1993. because best sound i've ever heard on a bootleg and plus the fact that perfect kiss follows up.

Don't think so Sam, I taped it off the radio that day and that's definitely the intro to Temptation, if you've heard it b4 IALP then that's been transposed!

I suppose a close second would be the 98 Reading version, which is pretty awesome. I also love the Taras Shev "really didn't sort out the lyrics beforehand" version, but I've done countless posts about that one :D

Got to go with the Rock Around The Clock version, that wah-wah-wah lasery bit at the beginning makes you want to play it a full volume

Absolutely love the early work in progress versions the best with the early sequencers(Taras '81). Can't really listen to it live otherwise.....nothing really surpasses the 12".

Tower Ballroom 86 - very loud and passionate, lots of whoops and f-words. Followed by Ceremony.

Tower Ballroom 83...."and Iv'e never seen such C***'s quite like you before"

Gotta go with the Reading version from 93 - Others might be better but haven't heard em. Remember a good version from Palsport Bologne June 82, Taras is good too for a ("hmm... this is good, but should probably have words... what shall I sing next" point of veiw).

agreed. I adore the 12" and have gone apeshit everytime I've seen 'em play it live, but nothing really stands out on a live tape except the early versions. There's one from pasadena '81 that's really raw I think.

Don't have the '98 show, but, yeah, anytime that Barney's pissed off and spouting vulgarities qualifies as a good version of any of their songs.

I just meant that aside from the really early versions it's the one sort of staple to their set that's not been modified over the years as things like Blue Monday, TPK, BLT, etc. so as far as I'm concerned, one post-'81 version's as good as the next.
