What song made you a New Order fan?

Blue Monday

I realized them with Blue Monday sometimes in 1983. I'm a fan since The Perfect Kiss in 1985!

I hate to admit, but I first heard Orgy's cover of BM in 1998 and after, I wanted to hear the original version. So, I did hear it and liked it, although not until I heard Crystal did I buy anything.

It all started with JD, then I moved to NO. It was DNE (Peel Sessions) that did the job..

Ceremony, 1999. I'd got Substance for my birthday and as soon as this came spinning through my speakers I thought "Oh my God, what the hell is this?" I then picked up most of the albums and the rest is history.

I was a JD fan. I saw NO live early on and was very disappointed. Then I heard Blue Monday. I haven't stopped dancing since (mentally nowadays!)

true faith in 1987. it was the first one i knew was by new order. although in reality it was blue monday, which i had already been enjoying for about a year without knowing who it was by.

TPK...after hearing it for the 2nd time on local college radio (the 12" version no less) I finally had the guts to call and find out who it was...

It was the first vinyl I ever bought...and still one of the best songs ever.

mine was temptation '86. i was 15, and i downloaded it by mistake haha. i was looking for heaven 17's temptation, but found new order's instead.

the best mistake i've ever done in my life :D i own all their albums, got loads of vinyl singles and dvds e.t.c. hehe :D

i think it was bizzare love triangle. i also heard blue monday right around the same time, so i guess those 2 songs got me into new order.

BLT got me to start listening to New Order, Temptation continued my interest, and True Faith made me a permanent fan

Now it is coming back. It was not Blue Monday, rather, it was The Beach. I loaned my tape player to someone and they returned it with a tape in it. They recorded The Beach froma college radion station and fortunately the DJ, Bob Dorr of Bobby's Blue Band fame (suck) named the track and artist. Had to been the summer of 83 because I remember said tape player being stolen a few months later. It was not until the following sumer that I made a major vinyl attack-I bought the 12' of Temptation, Thieves Like US, FACTUS 8 and Movement in one fell swoop. But it was not until I was listening to TPK 12' on a shitty car stereo while smoking a fatty with a chick that I REALLY fell in love with NO. Low Life was purchased next as well as PC&L.

Blue Monday (sounds cliched, but it's true)...that was fucking awesome the first time I heard it after discovering JD first and wondering what the guys did after Ian died

I knew NO because I'm Cure fan and heard they listened to Joy Division/NO (though Robert Smith seemed to like JD more).

I remember hearing "Shellshock" on the radio a lot aged about 12 or 13. I really liked that (oh, the shame) and I don't really understand why it wasn't a bigger hit as it must have a lot of airplay on the likes of Gary Davies and Steve Wright on fabulous Radio 1...

I loved True Faith but at that time I only bought albums, not singles. The first one I bought was "Fine Time" on 7" in December 88 (aged 15) and once I got Technique I had to get everything.

I got into Joy Division in 1989 when I broke my leg and was off school. A mate of mine lent me some magazines (not that kind!) to keep away the boredom and one of them was a car magazine with a music reviews page (WTF?). It had a review of Substance 1977-1980 and I bought that on LP on the strength of the review alone, never having heard them. I took me a little while to get into JD but once I did I was totally blown away. I had to go back a couple of months later and get the fucking cassette too, since it had loads of extra tracks!

Hmmmm...me thinks it wa EGG or Tempation. I dunno, but on of those two.

NO followed JD for me, but Procession was the first NO track that knocked me dead

It would be the cover of "turn the heater on" from the peel sessions record. A girlfriend made me a mixed tape that included "she's lost control" that I was obsessed with, that was in 84'. In my little backwoods town, getting information on any bands other than van halen was pretty tough in 84', so I just listened to She's lost... for about 3 months and eventually found out the story, at which point I picked up the peel record for a buck.

Transmission/She's Lost Control from 'Something Else' - I'd heard Joy Division on John Peel's program without really taking much notice, but actually seeing the band performing made a huge impression. Unfortunately unlike someone I knew at school I didn't go and see the band at the Nashville Rooms the following weekend!

It's hard to pin down one particular song... Of course it'd have to be that one about a ship on a harbour and how the lead singer would be so much better off if it weren't for this very annoying lover-nuisance of his... But then again, it was hearing the likes of The perfect kiss, Bizarre love triangle and mostly Shellshock (that one REALLY blew my mind the first time I heard it) that made me get ever more ineterested, and I guess it'd be fairer to say that Technique really made me a fan, because it was after I got it that I realised I had to get everything else by them. :D

As for JD, I found out I knew Love will tear us apart from the radio, though it'd never dawned on me it was them, and to be honest I was a bit scared the first time I heard She's lost control! But it was right around the time I was learning how to play and stuff, so it was really appealing as they turned out to be so easy... But it's impossible not to be moved by Ian's lyrics. And I got torn between the rawness of Interzone and the touching beauty of Atmosphere.

You've nailed it in one sentence. The only band who can switch like that in the space of three minutes and not make it sound like an effort.

Borrowed Substance off a mate in the year of its release and was instantly hooked, that little continous play switch on my walkman.. well it was set to 'on' and the tape wound on repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat...

Dont ask me which song, i was literally blown away by the whole damn album!!
