Which Joy Division album do you think is greater? Unknown Pleasures or Closer? I think Closer is one of the greatest albums of all time. It is just so hauntingly beautiful. A Masterpiece. Although I do like Unknown Pleasures, it doesn't come close to Closer. Few albums do.

Closer, but mainly for side 2. Atrocity Exhibition on it I've never liked very much (preferring the Radio Picadilly version instead). Then Passover is so-so.

I've always fancied UP over Closer. I like 'em both, though :thumb:

of the two, I would probably pick closer, but given my choice I would pick still.

Unknown Pleasures for me. Unique drum sounds. Morris and Hannett are geniuses. Closer is also unique. Better cover! It's sacrilege to choose...

They've all got their good points and bad points, as has Still. I prefer the songs on Closer, if not the versions. All but The Eternal anyway, which has never been a favourite. Maybe I have heard too much live stuff, but Unknown Pleasures now sounds a bit too claustrophobic in places for me, and the power isn't ever really unleashed for a sustained period.

Then again, some of the songs on Still (the recorded sides only, forget the live stuff) are in my all-time favourite JD songs.

Unknown Pleasures is my all time favourite album. Like David, "Atrocity Exhibition" lets Closer down (I think it's the drums) otherwise that might be my favourite instead.

I remember some reviewer or writer compared the two by saying something about UP being like a slab of concrete compared to Closer's marble. I couldn't disagree more. I also think that UP is Hannett's best work over a long-player.

Gotta go with UP, it's just a cracking rock album. The songs on Closer might be more mature, but the production on UP is just monumental.

What I'm about to say would be considered sacrilege here in Greece :uhoh: ... but since there are no greeks around except for my bf and my bro I'll go ahead : UNKNOWN PLEASURES

unknown pleasures sounds to clear. ian's voice to near. and the production is a little bit to direct...

sounds like it's right down the middle between these two albums.

It's strange, I've listened to these albums so many times I don't really need to anymore. However if I had to make a choice I'd vote 55-45 in favour of Closer.
