I know how some of you guys out there want to know what Barney or Ian were singing about on songs, so what do you make of this one then ? Having been singing it myself recently (still time to vote for our version :thumb: ), it has got me thinking.......

Here are the lyrics in full.

This is a crisis I knew had to come, Destroying the balance I'd kept. Doubting, unsettling and turning around, Wondering what will come next. Is this the role that you wanted to live? I was foolish to ask for so much. Without the protection and infancy's guard, It all falls apart at first touch.

Watching the reel as it comes to a close, Brutally taking its time, People who change for no reason at all, It's happening all of the time. Can I go on with this train of events? Disturbing and purging my mind, Back out of my duties, when all's said and done, I know that I'll lose every time.

Moving along in our God given ways, Safety is sat by the fire, Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, Left with a mark on the door, Is this the gift that I wanted to give? Forgive and forget's what they teach, Or pass through the deserts and wastelands once more, And watch as they drop by the beach.

This is a crisis I knew had to come, Destroying the balance I'd kept, Turning around to the next set of lives, Wondering what will come next.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really make much difference what we think or say !

I always thought that this was about him and his missus?

But then I'm not exactly MENSA material:uhoh:

I think the lyrics represent a self analysis of what was certainly going on in his personal life at the time. It seems to me he was at a crossroads and wasn't too sure which way to turn for the best. Quite a gifted lyricist really when you actually read his works unlike what you see today.

I still think its about his missus

Well, unless he finally comes clean, admits it was all a Reggie Perrin, and turns up on here telling us it was all cribbed from an episode of the Twilight Zone, I guess we never will know, and are all going to have to make it up as we are going along.

To me, it seems that the song is about how he feels now he's met someone else (song written November 79), how he feels compromised by his commitments to his wife and daughter and his wishes to be a free agent, able to do as he pleases.

What a lyricist he was.....

Actually never really thought about the lyrics here but i must admit that you could be on the right track TIM with your comments.Good thread this as i have never really tried to work out if the lyrics are factual or just abstract.Suppose in retrospect his feelings at this traumatic time are laid bare here.I have sung along with these songs so many times but didn't pay too much attention to them.Perhaps you could do this with some of their early JOY DIVISION songs so we can get more INSIGHT into them.Good call.:thumb:

And yet when anyone else starts a lyric analysis thread (ex. the Perfect Kiss one a while back), Tim roundly rejects analysis just because Barney says his lyrics mean nothing. I guess Ian's lyrics, being much better, are more deserving of a look.

Whoosh. I guess you missed the plug for the Community entry that this thread was, then..... Is this the seriousness of youth manifesting itself in a rage of self-righteous indignation ?

Oh dear, it's the Paul Morley brigade again. Tell it like it is mate, you're pissed off!

I'm merely pointing out a small inconsistency, Tim. If this thread really is just another bit of shameless self-promotion, then that changes things a bit. You allegedly did plunk down some lucre to get your cover properly recorded, so I can appreciate your penchant for repeated self-endorsement in order to get on the Community album. Although I did notice the distinct plug for your cover in the post, you need not confuse matters so much by trying to create intelligent discussion about song lyrics; after all, as Artaud says, if "a contemporary public does not understand 'Oedipus Rex,' I shall make bold to say that it is the fault of 'Oedipus Rex' and not of the public." As for the subject of lyric deconstruction, Morley's diatribes are seriously overdone (although I always did like the "snagged on the jagged edge of success" line) and not the sort of thing I take too terribly seriously after a certain amount of time. However, I still think there is legitimate reason to critique the lyrics, as everything present in a work of art must signify something or else it spoils the entire piece.

I'm sorry. I had forgotten that intelligent discussion was the divine right of the student who thinks he already knows it all, as is the impression you are so obviously trying to give.

As for your comment about our "allegedly" spending money on our cover, well yes we did. Ask Doggy or Jon Stubley, the other members of the band, not that it is any of your business. If I want to promote our song, I will do. I don't need your permission or blessing.

A little word of advice, if I may. You don't know it all, son. You don't even come close.

Tim, you're taking my comments a bit out of proportion, as can be a possibility in this inferior mode of communication. It just seemed mildly hypocritical that you'd start a lyric deconstruction thread after rejecting the whole notion of lyric desconstruction in the past. I freely admit that I don't know everything, and that you certainly know much more about all things New Order than I do, but when people such as myself are told that our opinions (as part of the aforementioned "intelligent discussions") don't matter because the lyrics "don't mean anything," then who is really being self-righteous?

My comment about your band spending money on your cover was not meant as an attack, but simply a logical justification for why you'd keep resorting to self-promotion. You were the one who remarked several times on the Community forum about the matter of spending money on your cover, so while it certainly is none of my business, it IS public knowledge. You definitely don't need my "permission or blessing" to promote your band's interests, but I am of the opinion (and I'm not alone in this) that continually forcing plugs down our collective throats is only causing a bad taste in our collective mouths.

Lastly, the clearly ageist tone in your responses is tired and unnecessary.

I'd like to see you two fellas with your own forum, I for one would visit everyday and I reckon I could sell tickets for a realy controversial topic. Long may you both post. This is one of the threads I'd show to a prospective NOOL, though I wonder how many Lurkers have been tempted to jump in . Anyway , carry on :thumb:

I just spent about an hour typing out a 500000 word response to the latest masterpiece to spew from the spleen of our learned friend in Nowhereville, only for the server connection to go down and consign it to the bowels of posterity before anyone had a chance to read it. Never mind, it just wasn't meant to be I guess.

David, when you have something to say that you think will be of relevance, interest or significance to me, then post it. Until then, stop using big words as you will confuse a number of would-be contributors.

Oh, and another thing, stop listening to Julio and his bile-spattered rants on MSN messenger. They all get back to me, you know. Not all your third parties are fellow-travellers.....

Ding Ding, round 3!! I think the Pope has got the edge at the moment, after clawing his way back from the knockout blow dealt by KP last night. Which, I may say was a little below the belt Tim; ageism on a New Order fan site. Don't make me laugh.

Tim, I honestly think we should agree to disagree. My opinions in this matter are my own (and not influenced by Julio, I might add), and I think they are perfectly valid. As reference material, here's the thread I was referring to concerning lyric interpretation of TPK (kindly note your response to everyone else's opinions):

http://www.neworderonline.com/MessageList.aspx?ThreadID=11113

That thread is the basis for my claims that you were being hypocritical by starting this thread, but since this thread is only an excuse for more self-promotion, I suppose you weren't being all that hypocritical at all--just repeating yourself again with regards to your band's cover (which I don't really mind, but it can be a bit much sometimes).

If anyone else checks the above link and sees that what I've been saying makes any sense, please say so. I'm not asking you to choose sides, but just to try to understand my point of view.

I have no interest in persuing this matter further, although I suspect I'll be drawn back into the argument as you'll no doubt want to have the last word. In any case, I don't harbor a deep grudge against you or anyone else over this or any other matter, so don't take things so personally.

I stand by the middle paragraph of that otherwise rude welcome to Joshua B. If you knew me at all you would understand why I responded the way I did.

As for the rest of this thread, I have no wish to continue arguing the toss. Heads it is. Peace.

Lighten up guys! Life is to short for this kinda shite. Anyhow, my dictionary doesn't contain all the words.
