Get Ready poll

Is there any way we could do a poll of the songs on Get ready, from best to worst? I am reading so many different opinions. It would be interesting to see how people rate the songs, ranking from 1 to 10.

I think I've got a fair idea of which song will end up top of the pile for worst one, any way.

(from what I've been reading browsing through the threads since joining that is....)

If you browse through the past topics, I think it has already been done twice.

No surprise I vote repeatedly for number 6 for that honor.

But Klumpy, it's so much fun, let's just keep on doing it over and over and over...

How has it been done? Is there a reliable, systematic tally? How many opinions does the final vote reflect?

Or...how many spliffs can one smoke so as to exert a diversionary influence on one's otherwise fair judgement???

By the way, I think it's been a week since we had our last "Rock The Shack: love or hate" thread.

What's wrong with you guys?

Here's what I think we should do: Everyone lists the ten songs in the order they like them. #1 on their list equals ten points, #2 equals nine points, etc. Someone tallies up the votes and gives us the results. We try to get as many people as possible to participate. What do you think? To make it really interesting, we could present the results according to when the person first became a New Order fan, i.e., 2 groups of fans: 1) those who became a devotee prior to Technique and 2) those who became a devotee after. I wonder how much the results would differ if we divided that way.

I have been over to neworderweb.com on their message board. People over there seem to LOVE Slow Jam. What's wrong with you people?

Any way, keep the lists coming. The more, the better.

The question is rather what's wrong with them? The most unifying principle here may well be the feeling that Slow Death is the worst thing NO have ever done.

I'm surprised to see that Primitive Notion ranks so high on most people's lists..

Patrick,

You can SAY it's the worst thing they've ever done (which is a very bold statement). But what reasons do you have? I'd be willing to bet that they won't hold up to scrutiny.

David, the music is boring and the lyrics are excruciating.

"Boring" is a very subjective term. I'm not bored by it in the least. In fact, I find it exhilarating. As for the lyrics, can you give any examples that are so "excruciating"?

Okay, David, here I am all by myself, everybody in the UK is out partying on a Friday night and it's left to me alone to make the case against Slow Death.

Lyrics: "See that bird has flown too high Pretty soon it will be tired." I've corrected the first line from the way it reads in the lyrics section here. "Pretty soon it will be tired" seems to me to be pretty tired.

"I got thirsty for a beer Then I had to go to sea The sea was very rough It made me feel sick."

Do you actually claim that you like these lyrics? To me they are painful to listen to.

You are taking the words at face value. He's not talking about birds or actually having a beer on a boat. Do you have any idea what these things represent?

I'm sure that if you told me what YOUR favorite song was, I could pick out some words that I thought were stupid too. However, I wouldn't do that, because I respect the artist and his craft. There is meaning in everything.

But we're getting off on a tangent. This is a poll, and I noticed that you did not submit a complete list. Unless the list is complete, I can't count it.

  4. Rock the shack
  5. Someone Like You

7 - Run Wild 8 - Rock The Shack 9 - Slow Jam

7-9 Are all terrible in my opinion and i cannot listen to them again. I listened to the album straight through at least 20 times without skipping any tracks. Now, i have made my own Get Ready with out these throw-away fillers. "Is Slow Jam the Temptation of a new generation?" Fucking hell this is not a soda commercial it's New Order. Absolutely not the Temptation of the next generation. Temptation is the Temptation of the Next Generation. Accept No Substitutes. David, I appreciate your love for New Order but what exactly are the hidden meanings in Slow Jam we are too blind to see? Barney is honest about his lyrics not meaning anything and that he rhymes for the sake of rhyming so i cannot see any deeper meaning in Slow Jam. The extra tracks from the Get Ready sessions (Behind Closed Doors, Sabotage, Player) are all better than 7-9 in my list. I would gladly take more Republic -esque songs in place of RTS, SJ & RW. I can't believe I still get so worked up over these songs but they drive me nuts. I loved all I heard from New Order (yes even Republic) but this Rock Out With Your Cock Out Meaningless Shite has to end with Get Ready or our beloved Order will soon fall victim to the Rolling Stones/ washed up old/fat men with guitars scenario.

Rant over!

(i spent my friday night at work so I took a little frustration out here where no one gets hurt)

David, re: Slow Jam....being quite unpopular.

Maybe many of us find that song just drags along & plods on without any standout melody...no highlights... just full-on sound coming from everywhere but going nowhere...just like some of those very bloated Oasis songs which you felt might go somewhere but unfortunately didn't happen and you found yourself listening to some over-long slab of over-indulgence....

Back to Slow Jam, I didn't even bother much about the lyrics.

Rock The Shack though is slowly getting my favour after a few months...

Well Booster my old rooster... great musical minds think along similar primitive nosebags. I didn't cheat either by peeking at your 'Bow-Selector' as my bomber at work took about 6 working days to scroll out post no. 50 in this here thread.

I'm laughing with much enjoyment at the fact Patty 'Rock the Shithouse' Smithereeny plopped his fabled song near the end of his list. Just makes me warm inside... a bit like Patty's home made sloup.

Not sure if we'd put the same BrotherBusty choices in their appropriate rankings Booster but I'm sure before long that opportunity will become apparent when some clever little chicken elects to post 'What are your top 10 BrotherBusty tunes'... in fact...

:hat:

I don't normally post on a Saturday, so this is a bonus for me as I'm having a break from sanding the same walls I was sanding a month ago when I last mentioned it. (Why didn't I just buy a new house with miniscule rooms after all... I haven't got any skin left on my fingers).

Oh well, back to the sandstone.

I don't know...I like Slow Jam because it reminds me of the old New Order. It has kind of a "Movement" quality to it. The guitar has a "Dead Souls" feel about it. Don't you think? One of the things I've always loved about NO is that many of their songs have these long, sustained notes wherein Hooky can go to town with his basslines. Am I alone in this? If you like Slow Jam, holler.

And keep those lists coming in.

I'm talking about the time period. The songs then were alot more guitar-oriented. The point of comparison is not with production values, lyrics, or precise instrumentation, but with style. Slow Jam is an old style song reminscent of the 1980-81 period.

It's the people who enjoy Slow Down that I worry about... these people have most probably had a frontal labotamy without noticing.

Rock the shack. Brilliant versus shite. Slow Jam. Some like it, some not... (you know, the lyrics are really fantastic. Just think of text like this, haha! Run Wild, the critics have softened somewhat.

YEAH!!

I'll post my list this evening. The idea of points and calculating an 'average' list of favorites is quite nice. So hopefully more people will also decide to post it.

You know, it's often these love-hate sort of tunes that really do well on the charts. I don't know about the UK, but here in the States I am confident that if it were released as a single, "Slow Jam" would place higher than any other single off of this CD. Hey, I never liked "The Reflex," but look how well it did.

I think, what Huntsman is indeed trying to say, is that he is not too fond of Rock the Shack....

  6. Close Range

To choose was very rough! It made me feel.... :\puke:

Well, so far Muffy and I are the only ones who voted Slow Jam #1. I guess we're the only ones that have any taste.

I am not sure as to whether slow jam should really be the #1, but I do have to admit, I like the song too!! (very much, although I only placed it #7 due to choises to be made....).

The text of slow jam is brilliant anyhow.

Someone help me out with Martin's crypted song titles. I can't figure out what the following are: "What? No, Tipps and Alistair?" "Hooky Falls Off His Harley #1" "The Drowning Duck Song" "Bobby, You're a Scrubber"

"Bobby, You're a Scrubber" = RTS

So, David, when will the results be known?

I really want the webmasters to vote in this poll, so I'm going to wait with the results until after they do.

You're kidding. You were going to do this anyway? Why didn't you say something earlier?

Nevertheless, I am still going to finish this poll. The preliminary results are very interesting. All I would like before I finish is webmaster Nicolas' vote. In fact, I need it, because there are a few songs that are currently tied, and we need a tie-breaker.

So for the last time!

  1. Turn My Way
  2. Primitive Notion
  3. Close Range
  4. Crystal
  5. 60 Miles Per Hour
  6. Run Wild
  7. Vicious Streak
  8. Slow Jam
  9. Rock the Shack
  10. Some One Like You

 YOU MAY THINK THAT I'M OUT OF HAND. THAT I'M NAIVE, I'LL UNDERSTAND. ON THIS OCCASION, IT'S NOT TRUE. LOOK AT ME, I'M NOT YOU.

This topic again? Gee... Klumpy was right, I did post about it when "Getting Things Ready" was out... these days.. let's see what changed..

(I didn't look at my old top 10!)

  1. Turn My Way
  2. Crystal
  3. 60 Miles An Hour
  4. Slow Jam
  5. Primitive Notion
  6. Close Range
  7. Rock The Shack
  8. Vicious Streak
  9. Someone Like You
  10. Run Wild

Again, if a song turns out to be #10, it doesn't mean I don't like it...!!

One thing for sure, the BBC Sessions changed my perspective of some songs.. I was VERY close of putting Slow Jam & Rock the Shack higher in my list, but it wouldn't be fair to Crystal & 60 Miles An Hour.. how can they compete when those song aren't new to me since soooooooooo long...
