Had to point out to a heavy metal fan of a mate of mine that not every New Order song is like Blue Monday. They can be rocky, poppy and a few ballards. This got me thinking as to which NO slowie was my favorite. Well, then it all came back to me, it has to be 1963 as I remember playing when i lost my cherry. Although I think song does last more than 10 seconds!!!

Without a doubt it has to be...

As it is when it was

"This state of grace is consuming me"

Depends on what you call a slowie. As it is when it was certainly isn't as it really speeds up towards the end.

I don't really see 'Lonesome Tonight' and 'Leave Me Alone' as true slowies...

'All Day Long', 'Your Silent Face', 'Every Little Counts' : those are real slowies, IMO.

yea i cant argue its a bit of both but i believe itz all about how you interpret a song personally. Even with the fast guitars and ultimate crescendo at the end of AIIWIW it still to me retains an essence of a "slowie" it has a lot to do with Barneys sort of pleading voice, but also as the song to me seems to start off quite measured and calm - but ends up almost desperatly fast it has elements of the emotions that a slowie gives....

but for pure undiluted sloweness i'd say "every little counts" :)

IMO (the ultimate get out clause!) ;)

I'm thinking of the mountains in Bavaria, saunas, naked skiing, If you get my snow drift.

Avalanche, Vicious Streak, In a Lonely Place...

All Day Long is great but it's not slow.

'All Day Long' not slow ?!

And I think I was proving anal-retentive on the slowie subject...

It's slower than Vicious Streak I'd say...

seeing as NO have adopted it in most of their recent live performances in the last few years, what about Atmosphere?

How come no-one has so far mentioned Run Wild? Now that is just a fabulous and beautiful piece of music

Fuck, you're right, HM !

Okay, here's my vote : Run Wild !

:uhoh:

Yes indeed, how could we forget that? Record my vote for Running Welder too!

I think you're right about the bpm's of VS and ADL being similar Buster but the drums and the crescendo at the end make All Day Long seem faster. I was wondering when Run Wild would make an appearance. I keep trying to like RW but those FUCKING AWFUL LYRICS hold me ten paces back. I do like the line about "all those stupid people" but Jesus and Jehova in the same song?

The Andrea Mix of Blue Monday is nice and slow!

Even if it speeds up a little, to me, the crescendo at the end of ADL is more in power of the instrumentation than in its speed...

Lonesome tonight, if I had to make a choice.

Defo a slowie, sort of song which Kills Audience Participation, if you not what I mean! Quite a few Order songs like that - All Day Long, Thieves, 1963, Elegia, Leave Me Alone, KW1, We All Stand, Every Little Counts, Ruined In A Day. Not really sure where I stand on AIIWIW, but I guess it's a slowie, as it's a bit of a listen-along-to song, rather than a jump-along-to song, IMHO.

All of the above, classics all! :smoking:

Can anyone remember where it was Hooky fucked up the start to Leave Me Alone by playing it on the wrong string, twice, then improvising for the first few bars, so that everyone thought it was a new song until Gillian's guitar kicked in ? Probably around 1984 but I can't put my finger on it. Anyone ?

No votes for This Time Of Night, or Sooner Than You Think?

You call them slowies, Allen ?!

To me, slowie is closer to some ballad or mourning...

Yep, defo slowies. Like I said earlier, songs which Kill Audience Participation. They always used to get used in the 'middle' section of NO gigs when the band like to slow things down a bit.

NO don't really do ballards do they? Maybe only Run Wild and In a Lonely PLace are real slowies. In terms of a NO slowly all AJ suggestions, and maybe even stuff like Turn my way could be included

Well, I understand your point Allen. Let's say to me, your slowies are rather mid-tempo songs.

And, bloody hell, 'Sooner Than You Think' is quite fast, I think (O you know what I meeeeaaaan, Yes you doooo !)

Not convinced. New Order have a huge tranche of nutty 'jump-up-and-down' songs, but I don't think STYT or TTON quite fit into that bracket. Good tracks, obviously, but just nice to stand still and listen to. No moshing to these, whatsover.

Look out for the flag in Paris, Buster, and come over and Say Hello!

I will, Allen, I will, if I can (being in the seated places).

I guess we will never agree on the slowie subject...

Would defo say Turn My Way is a slowie too. Can you imagine jumping up and down to that one? I think not. Lighters out everyone. And sway!

Remember Allen that lighters are waved in slow movements. Can you imagine waving at the same rythm as STYT ?

And, by the way, what's a mid-tempo for you ?

Originally posted by Buster Klumpy And, by the way, what's a mid-tempo for you ?

Up Tempo - Temptation, Age of Consent, Ceremony, Perfect Kiss, BLT (Bro'hood version only), etc. Mid Tempo - Close Range (tries too hard, but doesnt' quite get there), Blue Monday, Shellshock (upbeat, but shite), 60mph, etc. Down Tempo - As It Is, In a Lonely Place, All Day Long, etc.

Going back to TTON and STYT, if I had to order Low-Life in terms of 'speed' or 'meatheadedness' or 'down-the-front-ness' then I'd go -

Sunrise Face Up Perfect Kiss Subculture Love Vigilantes This Time Of Night Sooner Elegia

Most defenitly "Lonesome Tonight"

The very term "Slowie" calls to my mind the last number or two (or Three) at the old discotheque where the DJ would put on a smoocher for couple to get intimate and spoony over each other, and the only pleasure to be had from observing this was the propect of some sad duffers sitting around alone and gormless becuz they were simply too ugly to be plucked by the brassy lasses for the pleasure of the dance.

Just can't imagine ANY New Order song fitting this criteria, however......

New Order really don't "do" "slowies": slow songs, funeral dirges, sad elegies perhaps, but not "slowies".

Frig,.... someone will be saying they're a DISCO group next. Now THAT is out of order!!!

just had to drag this up to the top by the scruff of the neck and say..

RUINED IN A DAY has gotta be one of the best neworder slowies - someone mentioned it earlier in this thread but i feel obliged to reinforce its greatness ;)
