Are New Order a heavily male-oriented band?

Well, I mean not a gay-appeal, of course. I mean, they have nothing to offer to a woman, don’t they? New Order are kinda anti-feminine. They won't sing "Come up baby and I'll give you a kiss", they'd rather offer a kiss of death. :D Or they piss you off with a betrayal mood. That’s cool and that’s what I like about them too (if to think of it for a second). My wife is way too American and she doesn’t get New Order. They are not “nice”. Hell, all my exes in Texas… Barney, would you write a good song for a good girl from Texas? (Ha, ha, I know that would be a sort of “Run Wild” then… don’t go there :) )

They create something special. Very special. The best music on this self destructing planet (sorry i nearly started my Thom Yorke impression then). They appeal to everyone i know,maybe its only one song but EVERYONE likes ONE song.

They'd rather give you the Kiss of Death???

First of all there are no cheesey NO love songs. Britney Spears covers that. Most other bands cover that shit. But if you really search their catalog you can find "romantic" tunes. The whole punk/post punk movement was about breaking away from the whore rock and roll and pop music became. NO is about creating new music. Death of cliches.

As for the male orientation I do not know. Bernard, despite his tits, is a guy who writes about relationships. 1963 not quite from a male perspective. However, most of their songs appeal to everyone. I remember making a NO tape for a female friend who just broke up with someone. She really appreciated the anger and feelings of the lyrics. Hits right at home.

As for the Kiss of Death I cannot tell you what that means. Suicide, death or AIDS. I do not think they give that out instead of 'baby I love you let's take off all our clothes and make a baby."

So Twist, your premise is that woman are really only interested in *romantic* songs of some sort. But hey, that's OK because Barney deals with *relationships* so there's something in it for women after all. That's nice...b-but aren't they allowed to be interested in the music itself?

I don't think that I'd call them a heavily male oriented band. That be like Kid Rock or Creed or something shitty like that.

I think New Order, not physically speaking, are kind of androgynous. Then again, the Cure and Smashing Pumpkins could also be seen as androgynous.

I wouldn't say so, no: they've got something for everyone, musically speaking.

Funny but I always thought of them as more of a "female" band.... Joy Division is much more of a male experience.

Don't know what to make of this. They've never been remotely oriented towards males, females or indeterminates. It's seven white notes and five black ones.

There was a quote from Bernard years ago when asked about New Order's fans and said it was a mixture of 'Football Hooligans' & 'Spotty Students'. Although i remember a large group of girlies screaming 'Barney...Barney' at the Wembley Arena gig in 87'.

i love the NO, but the lady doesn't. it bugs her when barney misses notes. although, she does like "here to stay" as a song...

I have the impression that this question is too american to apply to New Order. Americans are usually the only people worried about such distinctions/classifications enough to bother. Barney's lyrics give me the impression of being awfully personal. Being that he's a straight bloke, it seems only natural that he should write and sing from a male point of view. Either way, I hope it stays that way.

From looking at me a bit puzzled when I put yet another NO track on to buying herself JD Substance all in the last few months.

I know as many women who like them as I know men..actually people here who like "tough" bands don't like New Order, they're often percieved as "too soft". I always found them very female-friendly, anyway.

Hell of a demographic, foreign climes wise.

Mrs garymac reckons the Olympia gig was a lad thing downstairs and mixed upstairs. She also reckons I sounded like an asthmatic pit pony at the after show, so it might be an unfit type of thing, or a too old for stage front thing.

As Tim says waaaaaaay back up this thread, the 'laddish' thing is certainly not reflected in the music. How they gained such a blokey following is probably too complicated and long-drawn-out a phenomenon to accurately chart (were gigs in 1980/1981 "laddish"?), but is probably has a lot to do with the very purist Factory "integrity" thing: Factory was obsessive and somewhat anal (albeit in a good way), and (for whatever reasons) young straight men who get into pop music tend to be similarly obsessive and anal. I know I certainly was (and, er, probably still am.....)

That said, now everyone's knocking on a bit the gigs are a lot less laddy, especially with wives and children now along for the ride, though I do remember being in the pub with a group of lads from Leeds before one of the Brixton shows and we were laughing about how you can always tell when there's a New Order gig nearby by the Barney cuts ordering pints of lager eight-deep at the bar (and the pubs prior to the Olympia show were a virtually ovary-free zone). Looking further back, just about my only clear recollection from GMEX '88 (my first gig ever) was that I'd never seen so many wildly drunk young women in my life before. If I didn't have a bootleg tape, I swear I wouldn't be able to remember anything about the music, but the sight of a very pretty student-type with smudged make up and vomit on her shirt screaming "show us yer cock!" at my uncle in the queue beforehand will live with me forever....
