Perish the thought, but if there was no New Order, which band would you listen to the most and go to see live.
I think I'd probably say The Charlatans, because they keep putting out great albums and they are brilliant live.

Judging from the number of album and discs in my collection, it would be Nick Cave. Why? I've listened to him almost as long as NO, he puts out great albums, and has a great backing band with the Bad Seeds. Lots of proverbial fingers in a number of musical pies with this lot. Blixa with Neubauten, Martyn with the Triffids, Conway with his session work and solo stuff, and main man Mick Harvey, also as session man and producer, trying to keep the whole affair "straight", as it were, for the drug usage of Mr. Cave has been well chronicled.
Ugh! Ugggh!! Not Nick Cave. Pur-leeeeze. He's SO overrated here in UK. Every blip and fart he comes out with is unanimously praised to the skies by the sycophantic music press here. Truly they have never ever licked the arse of anyone as much as they have done with Nick Cave. A sacred cow just waiting to be shot down.
Sorry, Nick Cave is cack - a terrible singer as well , and he sports a mullet (a heinous crime in itself) - he should be banished to room 101 - SHUG, what do you say?
And on that ......yawwwwwwwwnnnn...note :sleepy: I'm banishing myself to bed - I'm knackered from getting back from Amsterdam this morning and I've not slept properly for nearly 24 hours........
Goodnight - catch you all tomorrow for more filth and fury.

Monaco :D
Which band other than NO? Well, I know my choice is far too 'common'...and they are everywhere, overated, etc...but I think they are very professional and genuine in their work...I mean to say the other band is ....U2!!!!
Though I've never really checked their websites much...but I have a huge collection of their music and I consider them second to NO...anyway they were inspired by JD, weren't they?
The Boo Radleys, even though they don't exist anymore.
I agree with you on Nick Cave, Martin... For a change... ![]()

Oh my...if there was no New Order I might just have to do myself in....but if this were so, I guess I would have to say Moby...seeing as he is the only artist I have seen live more often than New Order...
placebo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! though i expect everyone else here will no doubt tell me how crap they think they are. the manics come a close second.
It's very hard to imagine listening to anything instead of New Order... But let's say I had never heard of them, then I'd probably still be listening to whatever I was listening to before I heard of them... and that would in this case be Blur. :)
But if someone came and took all my New Order records so I had to listen to something else... I don't know what I'd listen to the most... Nothing can replace New Order!
REM, Radiohead, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Morrissey, Lou Reed, Beastie Boys, and Weezer would be my choices of people are acts that are still around. As for the past, well, too many to list here, but Joy Division and the Who would be near the top...

Shugster, it is with great sincerity that I mention the greatest exponents of 'Northern Soul' ever to come out of, erm, the Midlands! Yes indeed, the fabulous Dexy's Midnight Runners have been a massive influence on my life and surely would make it onto a list of my top five all time faves, and no mistake. What was the geezers name by the way? When was he in the band?

Muffster, his name was Kevin Adams, but because Kevin Rowland was the singer, he changed his name, because they didn't want 2 kevins in the band..for the life of me, I can't remember what he changed his name to!

Existing bands I'd have to resort to are my second and third loves SAINT ETIENNE and STEREOLAB

Actually...I just got to thinking about it again...and if not for the influence that the order has had on me, I would probably be buying Britney Speared and n'stink albums, and worshiping Michael (No, I really am Diana Ross, and my favorite past time is blowing bubbles) Jackson as the king of pop...so count myself as one who has been saved from this mediocrity by the order!!
Probably one of these Monaco The Ukrainians/The Wedding Present, great live bands. or Leftfield

Sarah and myself actually kissed in return for my glowing review of their gig a few years back (the Good Humor tour in May 1998)
I'm a very respectable guy when it comes to ladies - I keep my dignity.

As for the Phonics, I do like them, but they arent really in the same league as NO and Duran when it comes to fave bands.... Saw them earlier this year, but didnt bother getting tickets for their next set of gigs. I like the tunes, but i think my fetish has a great deal more to do with Kelly Jones than the actual sound they produce. So Martin, if it makes you happy you can abuse them all you like, just lay off Kelly and dont even think about making any Welsh jokes.... lol

Don't worry Liv dear - Kelly's singing just isn't my cup of tea, but ,please, NEVER in my worst excessive moments will I go so low as to diss the Welsh. EVER! The only Welshman whom I dislike irrationally is probably Tom Jones. (ugh!) But I've had many a great time visiting places in Wales - Portmeirion is a lovely place (TO ALL YOU OTHER NEW ORDER POSTERS HERE - IF YOU CAN DO SO, GO TO PORTMEIRION! What a place. They filmed THE PRISONER there in the late 60's and loads of fans still make their annual pilgrimage down there ...cool place just for chilling out.) and all those towns on the Lleyn Peninsula are lovely. Do you know, back at my parent's in the Wirral (across the river from Liverpool) we get all the Welsh TV channels as well - my fave Welsh programme used to be Pobol Y Cwm (ha ha don't laugh!) even though it's all in the home tongue. I sometimes watch Welsh TV cuz I just like the lilting sound of the language (Super Furry animals singer Gruff Rhys has the most amazing Welsh lilt in his voice. One of my best friends Sylvia comes from Blackwood (same place as the Manics) but she's married a Canadian and has since emigrated to Edmonton, Alberta.) I wish I could speak a bit of Welsh. I mean, I'm currently trying to learn Dutch so when I finally live in Amsterdam I won't be such a pig-ignorant British asshole. :)
Anyway, back to Tom Jones - I said this earlier in a much older thread, but I'll repeat it, cos it might make you giggle. An old flatmate of mine hates him with a passion to the extent that she once said - and I quote - "I'll be more than happy to throw my Knickers at Tom Jones anytime - as long as I've shat in them first!" ![]()
So, apart from Old Creaky-Hipped Groaner Jonesy (Senior.), I've NO anti-Welsh tendencies at all. And, please don't interpret this little speech as grovelling either.....it isn't!

I'd say Husker Du, who of course have been sadly no more for 13 years. Grant Hart is a flawed genius.
Failing that, Radiohead, Manics, St.Etienne.....the list is very long and very good !

The Fall, haven't listened to them for ages Tim, might have to start playing some of their stuff soon!
A Norwegian band called Fra Lippo Lippi
since they're unheard of, the next best thing would be Tears For Fears
I think it's kinda funny I think it's kinda sad The dreams of which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had
Errrr....
maybe Faithless, who I am seeing at Brixton 14th Dec Possibly Ash or Blur Chemical Brothers
Can't say any other band fill me with such Joy as the 'Order
I saw Monaco at the Scala last year and wasn't too impressed to be honest. Hookys a shit singer.
As regards Wales, I used to live but a couple of miles from LlanfairPG in Bangor. Nice scenery but FA to do

I know, it was a bit weird wasn't it? I thought it sounded like Barry White (the backing, not the vocals) actually. But fear not, our fave Welsh Wizards are back on form with the BeachBoy Scuzz Pop of their latest single (Drawing) Rings Around The World, now having dived spectacularly OUT of the Top 500 as I write. As if that's any surprise....

Yes i really do have nothing better to do....
You know - Super Furry Animals titled their first EP after that place - LlanfairPG (as it's often abbreviated to) believe it or not, I've often had a few tries at getting that one to sound right, but laughably I thtill fall flat on my fathe, I remember someone I met in Porthmadog trying to show me the correct pronunciation, but I was so overwhelmed I just promptly had a coughing fit. It's not easy, these tongue-twisters you all come up with!!!
I've even passed through the place - on the way to Holyhead - many times in the past. Maybe next time I should actually stop, and call by, and get an education. I could do with mastering it so I can be a smart arse and impress everyone else...... :)

...um.... "Have I got something better to do, or have I got NOTHING better to do?"
or, maybe.... "Do I have anything useful to say, have I got nothing useful to say?"
Go on, tell me I'm totally off the track then!!!! ![]()

you are totally off the mark, you are clearly crediting me with more decorum... the statement is a bit saucy... not like me at all...

Okay okay: attempt number two:
"Is it just my body you're after, or is it my ham, double egg and fries?"
You DID say "saucy" so don't get mad at me!!!! ![]()
Liv...has it ever occurred to you that you are perhaps the most sought after female on this site?

Cheers Klumpy!! Too nice of you really.......I prefer it when you slag me off!!! ![]()
My other bands would also be The Boos, but for the same reason as you GK.
Existing bands I'd have to resort to are my second and third loves SAINT ETIENNE and STEREOLAB
Both damn fine. Both GODLIKE . (Sarah Cracknell is a true babe
....and I've kissed her once or twice - on the lips!!! - utter heaven, how could I ever wash my mouth again after that???!!!
)
And Stereolab because, they never let me down - always coming up with the goods. And their latest album
Sound-Dust is well and truly lush. Any other Stereolab admirers here?
You're welcome Martin...
Yes, Stereolab, anytime...
Can I say that Laetitia dedicated a song to me at 2 different belgian gigs. Once it was 'Anamorphose', the other time it was 'Super-Electric'. Of course, there was a good reason behind this...
And, by the way, to me 'Sound Dust' is their best album since 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup'.

I totally agree, Buster. They've never disappointed me with any of their albums but you're right: Sound-Dust, in a word, is LUSH! Fave song- "Naught More Terrific Than Man" - beautiful beautiful tune - up there with the best of Burt Bacharach (yes!! really!!), whilst the ending of "Nothing To Do With Me" - just has me in fits! This! From Stereolab! (OK, I know, it was actually taken from Chris Morris's "Blue Jam" sketch) Utterly bonkers!!!
