Right, I'm from Manc, and I reckon us Manc New order fans should stick together, the original and best, after all New Order are our local band.

Make yourselves known now, and I reckon we should all go on the piss or go to a few gigs (new order of course!).

Failing that, if there are any Manc ladies out there who are single you could do worse than track me down!!! ha ha.

As it happens I live in Stretford, home of manchester united FC (i'm a liverpool fan!) but I have had the pleasure of growing up near my local hero's: New order/Joy division, Morrissey & Marr, Ian Brown & John Squire! Wicked man, why would I want to move away? Be proud of Manc Land!

So Matt, you love your local band, you're into the Manchester scene, and you're proud to be a Manc. Fair enough. So WTF inspired you to ignore the local pile of 'red shite' for another pile of 'red shite' 30 miles away?? :p I'm perplexed!!

Well I'm about 2 hours from Manc. land so that counts me out... and I don't support either Manchester Shithouse, Manchester United Club Biscuits or the Toffee Suckers.

Maybe the people who don't live in Manc. but who like New Order should be called the cat weasals. I really dig Kate's Brushes but can't I be a fan 'cause I don't live in her tree house?

Well I'm a "surrogate" Mancunian, but I wasn't born here. Thank fuck for that! I love and hate this place in equal measures, but there's no denying some of the great music that has come from here - having said that it did produce a lot of shite as well.
Anyway, here's a question: why did the IRA drop a bomb on the Arndale Centre in 1996?

A: Cuz they didn't have enough time to plant it at Old Trafford!!

jokes about the IRA bomb in Manchester are in incredibly poor taste. If you had actually been evacuated by the police that day - you might not find your crap joke so amusing.

As for the thread about NO fans from Mcr and Mcr being so important - why don't you support Man U or Man C?

Yeah, you're right......, I'm sorry Phil if it caused offence, My sick sense of humour takes over sometimes. Actually, I myself WAS in Manchester that fateful day of June 15th - I was supposed to be performing with one of my drum bands at......ahem......the Manchester Jazz Festival (please don't giggle) ...at Dukes 92 when the thing went off whilst I was in Piccadilly Station. 11.15-ish - just a huge bang, which shook the place. For some reason I knew INSTANTLY it was the IRA letting one off, and seeing the smoke curling up from the direction of the Arndale Centre kind of made my bloody chill. For the next four hours or so we were marooned in the city whilst everything ground to a halt. Pretty surreal, all told. People were just standing around shellshocked and dumbstruck. It went so quiet. We eventually made our way towards Dukes 92 just to confirm what we already knew - the whole thing had to be called off (it went ahead a month later) and we kept wandering round the edge of the city, finding some way of getting out through all the cordons that were in place. I eventually got back home six hours later to see it all on the news, realising that I was actually there at the time and felt it going off. It was a truly unnerving experience but I guess that over time your anger and shock over the incident sorta fades....which is, I suppose, where that silly uncalled for joke came into it. But, taken in context, it IS out of order. So, consider my wrists well and truly slapped.

On the other hand, if it was a sick gratuitous joke about Liverpool FC, however.... (and not forgetting all the recent terrible Bin Laden/Taliban/America jokes that are currently doing the rounds on the internet - have you SEEN some of those images of New York's Skyline doctored to show loads of Mosques, and the notorious one of Bin Laden getting intimate with Mr. Bush? Fucking Hell! )

HA HA HA HA HA....YOU ARE SO CLOSE, BUT YET SO FAR AWAY SONNY! :nonono:

Think of those massive Brazilian Samba Bands who parade round Notting Hill with loads of dishy ladies in hot costumes struttin' their stuff upfront. Now imagine you're bangin' your drum (so to speak) right behind them, watching them gyrate lasciviously. Thrown into the mix some groovy brass arrangements and funky rhythms. THAT's the kind of drum band I mean, dumbo! I play drums for LOADS of very eclectic bands - I play percussion and timbales with a Latin-Salsa outfit, who've supported a great Manchester-based Latin combo called APITOS (consult the who's who of Manchester World Music Bands, and you'll find 'em there!), I play drum kit with three very different bands: one rock, one experimental, and one full-on industrial noise terrorist. And I also help out on drums and percussion with a rather famous band (though NOT, I must add, in the success/loads of records sold- front) from Manchester fronted by a very well-respected and notoriously motormouthed music-scribe. (He's been a TV presenter from time to time as well.) I'm not tellin' ya who they are, so you'll have to use these clues I've just given you to find out for yerself.

Happy now, ignoramus???!!!

Marty, I apologise profusely, but I can't promise that it won't happen again! Tony Wilson's the singer in your band, I bet that's fun!!

I was probably a touch over sensitive Martin - but my mother was in M & s that day working - and the bomb went off just outside, minutes after the building was evacuated. We all like to take the piss so no offence taken.

As for New York - I've just got back from 8 days in NY and Washington - and I can tell you the atmosphere is still a little tense. The NY skyline is very different - but the people were very welcoming to Brits

Thanx for your acknowledgement Phil - hope the misunderstanding has been cleared up then. I think what I was getting at was, when some major shit disaster event has occurred, the only thing we can do to try and come to terms with it is by cracking a wry one or two - in the vain hope that it breaks the otherwise tense atmosphere. Although in hindsight, mine was little over-egged, I stand by my belief that Man Utd jokes are allowed- cos I despise them - my opinion of course. Remember when Princess Diana was killed? You're not telling me there weren't loads of sick jokes flying around in the wake of that event?

Anyway, it's heartening to hear of your US trip - believe me, when that shit happened, I freaked out, I mean I was actually planning on going back to NY this year - I usually alternate between NY and Amsterdam - as part of my annual sabbatical just to escape the bloody endless Fireworks going off here in Blighty. My last NY trip was 1997, so I had planned on returning this autumn, cos I really love the place. Anyway, when it all blew up, I was devastated. It takes a lot to shock me nowadays, with all the shit and violence everywhere, you become blase about it all, but this thing really shook me up - cos it was REAL - not some shitty disaster film. I went up those towers - took the photos, everything, during my last stay. Loved every minute of it. So you can imagine how I felt when I saw them collapsing on TV. My blood went cold. I was so upset I was in tears - it was truly traumatising. Even now, two months on, whenever that horrible sequence is replayed on the news, and you see all those people shocked and in tears (even blokes), it really does me in.
That's why I couldn't go back again this year - it's changed forever now. Its very sad. But it's scary too. All I have now are the memories - the photographs, but still cursing the blown opportunities now for more pics if I had managed to get back there. You know that sort of feeling...

Perhaps one consolation, apart from the undying resolve and determination of New Yorkers to get on with their lives in the face of such adversity (and these fucking anthrax scares don't help either) to which they deserve the fullest credit, is that, unlike most US cities, New York's Manhattan possesses TWO hearts - one in Downtown, the other in Midtown. Only one was shattered that fateful September Tuesday, the other, in Midtown, thankfully still stands intact - and will hopefully continue to beat loud and proud. Like I said, I love NYC. And I WILL go back there again sometime, maybe next year or whenevr I can do so.
I'd better stop now before I start getting tearful again....

YOU STILL HAVEN'T GOT IT YET HAVE YOU, SHUG? WHO'S THE GEEZER THAT FRONTS THE BAND THAT I HELP OUT ON DRUMS FOR??? HE'S WRITTEN SOME PRETTY ENTERTAINING BOOKS ON SOME GREAT CHAPTERS IN MODERN BRITISH (INDIE/ROCK/PUNK) MUSIC OVER THE YEARS. HE ALSO USED TO WRITE FOR THE NOW-DEFUNCT "SOUNDS" MUSIC WEEKLY. HAS THAT MADE IT ANY EASIER???

There's already a big group of Mancs who follow the Order around quite religiously, organised by a lad called Stash. Bit of a Closed Shop that lot though.
