Barn Dancing

Has anyone witnessed the dancing on Bizarre Love Triangle on the DVD of Reading '98... fuckin' unbelievable!!!

He does, it must be said, look like somebodys pissed up uncle at a wedding.

Agreed. I thought Barney's dancing had improved for Area: One compared to Reading 98.

i remember the days when barney just stood there and showed no expression. i almost like those days better.

Nah - gotta love a dancin' Barn. I reckon it's great (ie. the Pissed Uncle thing), as it's a way of seeing just how much fun he's having up there, which can only be a good thing. Although the "standing stock still" thing was cool at the start, I far prefer the unbelievably goofy dance of Barn and the alternately flailing/stooping really fookin low Hookyisms of later years. Bring it on! CTD

I remember people saying how BORING New Order were live in the 80s, and when I saw them back in 1993 in Toronto I wondered if they have been talking of the same band. Quite a difference, it was. (geez, I'm under the impression that I speak like YODA tonight)

In any case, even though Barney's dancing was a bit embarassing at Reading 98, I'm happy that he's getting a little bit more like David Gahan and Bono and less like a statue!

I like the pogo dancing Barney.... when he used the stand still he had a tendancy to look like a rabbit caught in the headlights!

He seems a lot happier performing these days, i can only think that the prozac has had an effect...

well the one thing that makes New Order New Order is the fact that they're off their heads.

They were mystifying in the 80's, confusing in the 90's and now their just complete freaks. God only knows what the kids must think of them.

Whatever they do they're fucking great.

The excitement and experimentation from N.O-gigs are maybe over, but...they're still great though :-)

New Order and the Barney-dance: "The standing still"-act in the eighties were more exciting in a way, more intense, more focused on the music. Anyway, I thought the way they experimented on stage were pretty exciting, unfinished playful tunes that later became songs like 586, Everything's gone green and Temptation. In a way, some of the gigs were used as "practise rooms" in small venues.

Now, they have become too big? Now, the performance is less experimention, more commersialism, but, still, I love them for not trying to be anyone else, seeing Barney childlike performance jumping, pogoing like some kind of Turkish folk dancer. So what? Anyway, He has finally managed to act more relaxed, more loosened up in front of an audience.

I dont think i agree with that, I dont think the fact that Barney has more confidence as a performer makes them any less focused on their music, if anything Get Ready has been a real return to the roots of New Order. Enjoying making music and trying different sounds.

I dont think they are "too big". Look at their recent gigs, and you'll see that. If they were "too big" ther would be behaving like U2 or Madonna or who ever. Their gigs are still all about one thing, the music, not the spectacle of performing.

And the guest musicians they have worked with surely suggests one thing, that they still believe in experimentation.

I dont think New Order can ever be described as "comercial".

Thats just my opinion though...

Hmm..thinking about it..maybe you're right.

I have not seen any recent gigs, only the DVD "3 16": I loved it and still do, but I think it was too close to perfection. No mistakes! and some of the charm might have been lost on their way to big venues like that.

Just comparing it with the old days; the eighties: It' only a natural development, as they attract more people to their gigs/shows. They still do deserve honour for doing it very much in their own way, and one cannot expect them to make the necessary distance (the formerly introverted style) to the audience anymore, in order to experiment and creating new songs on stage in front of the masses. (That belongs to the past and small venues.)

And now anxiously awaiting for the release of "Get Ready"....

I always heard New Order were awful live. However, having witnessed them having a great time at the Gorge and performing perfectly (even if Barney flubbed a couple lines) and hearing the exuberence in '"Someone Like You" I have to believe the band is happier than ever. If that shows through Barn Dancing then Bring It On!!!

I have to say I had heard NO was no good live but that is not true. I feel they are awesome especially after seeing them on the AREA One Tour! They were great especially with the way Barney moved across the stage. :) I feel their music and his performance that day made me even more estatic!! I can't wait till they come back to the States! I will definitely see them again!! ;)

I have to comment on the dancing. I heard before I went to the Area One concert that Barney couldn't dance but I figured it was out of his system since he is older now. Boy was I wrong.. He was up there dancing like he was the only one there... It was a bit funny but also cute at the same time... he was having a good time, you could tell!!!

Barney's even moving, breaking into a jig one minute and giving this disc the illusion that it's the Bernard Sumner Workout Program the next.<<<
