New Order: Live or Studio?

Not everybody is going to have the same opportunities to comment on this - we've all got the records and some of us have the live recordings, but not everyone will have had the opportunities to see the band live, particularly in their mid-80s peak.

The records have always been slightly disappointing to me in general, some great tracks that haven't always been as good on record as they were in a live context. The great thing about gigs in the 80s is that you never knew what you were getting from one song to the next, and the band could be mind-blowing one night and terrible the next night. Even on the shit nights they still had this aura, this presence - unless you had the opportunity to see them live (and video doesn't really capture the magic) you'll probably think I'm talking shit, as some of the records are truly great as well.

From what I've seen live which is 0 I guess myself and anyone else who has not seen them live has to vote for studio...

I never saw NO live but we can have an idea from the videos that are available, cd's and others. I think that live the energy is bigger and , as the is no clear rules, they can do something diferent from what they use to do in studio.

Live is better, but in studio is fuckibg good too

as a fan who's never seen them live, i say studio

i've only been fortunate enough to see the band twice, so most of my 'live' experience comes from videos, etc., which is hardly the same atmosphere. however, i think their concerts and albums complement each other, so i voted for both. i'm not thrilled with everything NO puts out, and there are things i dislike about concerts in general (annoying girls' hair in my mouth, drunk males' arms making contact with my nose, etc.) which mute even the best bands' performances for me, but NO is still the best damn band in the world so i'll take them however i can get them: live or otherwise.

New Order sounds much better when they have been recorded in a studio. A bit more mysterious, dark (even in lighter sounding tracks), and bleak. It seems they were like that live in the earlygoing but during the late 80s, 90s, to present I find their blend of bravado and fun lovin' spirit nausiating and bland. I'm all for things being upbeat and happy but not New Order. Smiles and "woops" be damned.

Since I have been collecting live recordings I must say that I prefer the live sound.

Live every time;

1. In the early days you never knew what they would play next- the anticipation was electric.
2. New tracks given their first airings live.
3. No encores, left you desperate to get to the next gig.
4. Missed notes and changed lyrics.
5. The bottle of Pernod on Barney's amp
6. The sheer agression of the early gigs.

Studio;

1. Very very ordinary :moon:

Both.

The purity of a studio recording (e.g. the opening of Primitive Notion)

The added power of a live performance (e.g. Ceremony)

Can't have too much Neworder, so I choose both :D

I think it's somewhere in between, to be honest. Look at Jonathan Demme's Perfect Kiss session video, or True Faith from the 98 Peel Session - finely honed live versions of the studio stuff. Marvellous.

Right, you have those early mad performances of Everything's Gone Green. But then songs like Mr. Disco sound obviously better on their brilliant studio versions. How can't we choose "both"?

NO's studio recordings are great but, I also enjoy listening to the songs live because the energy and various changes in the song when played live.

I used to go stage left in the mid 80s, you could usually get the front a bit easier, and it was then a case of working sideways during the set.

I've gone for both because I love (most of) the studio recordings. Having said that, since taking part in this weeding etc, I've learnt a lot about NO live and I love it! In fact the studio recordings hardly ever get played nowadays ...

Great band live (I saw them in Auckland 2002) but ya just cant kinda beat "Perfect Kiss" on 12inch now could you?? so the studio gets my vote

live in the pit...centre to right as close to the front as possible. this would often mean giving up drinking time to secure a good slot..but it had to be done.

some superb vinyl moments as well...always sounding better in pubs/clubs when you are shitted.
