NewOrderOnline is still using too much bandwidth...

Dumping the chat and the avatars, like other people have suggested, could help. Also, how about deleting threads in the forums after they've been left dormant for, say, a couple of months?
instead of adding ugly banners and stuff, would it not be possible to add product links to say amazon in the discography section? eg someone clicks on the unknown pleasures listing and a buy now link appears at the top, that way your providing more of a service rather than begging.
perhaps you could expand the shopping section to cover more rare merchandise from a number of merchants?
or you could do something like set a forum post restriction on ads. eg people who have made less than 500 posts see advertisements while others dont.

no! don't get rid of the media! the media is one feature that gets other people onto the site. maybe you could re-render them or something so then they're of a lesser quality. and ditch chat - i totally agree on that. you could put a restriction on the size of the avatars as well in terms of dimensions or actual bitesize.

*No, we are 3 already counting only Italy! :p I was talking about space and bandwidth, anyway. Of course Geocities is very strict, a couple of visitors downloading MP3 files are enough to get the site shut down for a day for exceeded bandwidth. By the way, sponsorship is a really serious idea. This place has a lot of visitors so there should be no problem, especially finding record stores to place banners.

That has been my plan for the last 2 years ;) been too lazy to do it ;)
Just for the record.
Banners & Smilies are now hosted elsewhere, let's see how long it will take my ISP to remove my free website

Files in media section are hosted elsewhere
I'll remove avatars tonight, you will now be able to put a URL in your profile, but the avatars will be hosted ELSEWHERE than here.. sorry, but I have to do it!
The JavaScript of the menu is hosted elsewhere as well, also on my free website, we'll see how long my ISP support it ;)
That should help a lot...
you could place naked pictures of hooky at random intervals throughout the site, that should be enough to deter the sane members of the community (makes this place sound like some damn hippy commune)
SAVE BANDWIDTH, THE FAST AND EASY WAYYYYY.

If you're talking about the free 5mb webspace Videotron gives us, it shouldn't be long before they shut you down. You're not supposed to have that much trafic on that server...
:D

You know, 2500$/year (canadian money) is not all that much for a website like this one, all things considered.
I'm still amazed that people have been willing to donate money to keep this alive, while it should be NEW ORDER, LONDON RECORDS and WARNER who should have been paying for this when you think about it!!!
At the end of the day, this website mostly beneficiates to THEM. What would 2500$ be for them? Spare change.
We were always told that they prefer having their own website in order to keep control over things, which is pretty normal (I would do the same probably), but that's the problem -- they don't have a website up, and when they put up a spot site for one particular release, it is never updated and is crap, basically.
After being online for so long, I think we have proved the seriousness of this venture -- I still don't understand why they won't support us.
The only conclusion must be: THEY DON'T CARE. And that is a bit frustrating for a fan, you know...

The problem, Seb, is exactly that this is not official. If they give money for NOOL, other sites could feel wounded (can you imagine DS complaining for money?).
I don't believe they simply don't care. They don't want an official site because official sites are gay. And they don' like to talk about themselves. If they supported a site like this, they would contradict their own principles.
Yeah, right.
To say you like to keep a low profile and be a worldwide pop star and perform in front of thousands of people in Reading all at the same time sure isn't a contradiction in itself, eh?

Kindda yes, it is. But they like to be popular not in usual ways. Maybe not having an official site make they feel superior. That's what I meant.
Even the most obscure band in the world, say, The Windscreen Lickers from Papua New Guinea, has an official website ( http://www.papuahost.com/windscreenlickers ). Even Gabrielles Wish, though first it was the guitarist and now a clueless fan... New Order not having an official site is a shame, which makes them look, for the average Internet surfer, as a band of no importance. BUT, the fact that a fansite could be their semi-official site could be really cool. Official sites made by labels are usually boring and poorly informative, NewOrderOnline is much better than the 99% of them. STILL, this doesn't change the label or at least the band should support NOOL. You need a contact with them. The only problem could be from what I understand Peter Hook, if not the whole band, perceives World In Motion as the most important site, certainly because of the contact between him and David. They probably ignore the status of NewOrderOnline (that's why you need a contact, to explain them what this site actually is and ask support), or they're still happy to be in touch with David because he doesn't need to ask money... I'm not saying I'm for one site or against the other (as you know I wish there wasn't such a fierce rivalry), I'm just telling like I think things are...

I know you are telling it like you think it is, Mick, but you ain't right. David Sultan bought a load of old equipment off Hooky, that is the connection. Hooky no doubt feels some kinds of obligation to the guy who spent thousands on tat, no perceptions of which is important etc. This site has the audience, WIM has the connections. This site has become a victim of its own success in many ways, without the commercial aspect it will be difficult to continue in the current manner. Page sponsorship may be an option - pop-ups are not. NOOL t-shirts would sell well, maybe these could be produced. Speculate to accumulate and all that ?
How's about we clean out some of the old threads in buy/sell/trade ? Some of them are requests for tickets for the Australian 02 shows and such like, the posters are no longer visitors to the site. Cleaning up a load of old messages will reduce some of the residual size of the site.
Thanks for making things clearer. Yeah, sponsorship is definitely the way. A banner on the top of each page could be enough to raise the money, right? And who would complain when it just takes one second to scroll and have your usual page and otherwise the page wouldn't exist at all?

That won't help, as the problem is bandwidth, not space. If nobody is reading these old threads no bandwidth is being used with them.

This won't change much, altough I would have to stop having a "real time" post count before I do that....
However we don't have a problem with database space yet...

Hey, speaking of Brazilian postmen, I have from a good source that our good old friend from Recife, JULIO MOURA, is still visiting this site about 30 times a day and is actually replying to mails from this forum on World in Motion.
That's certainly an innovative way of doing things, don't you think?

Yeah, but the Sultan told him off for it. See, even his "mate" thinks he's a cunt.
