If I was going to guess, I'd guess that it's the forums that are consuming most juice, probably because of the way forums are designed (it seems like a huge waste of bandwidth to have to reload an entire page just to get a new post).
I suspect that some of the hard-core NOOLers keep on hitting reload on the topics they are watching, each time creating a new page-load.
One controversial idea could be to limit the number of postings per 24hr period and/or week...
Another, perhaps more controversial, idea could be to merge with WiM... :D
Perhaps having a permanent PayPal like displayed would help the funding. A small banner may not be too bad either... even if it goes against the philosophy. What company wouldn't want to market their product/services to a diverse group of people who love to obsess about New Order 24/7?
BTW: Yahoo started to crawl the web to build their own search index - after dumping Google.
