NewOrderOnline is still using too much bandwidth...

Seriously, we are using 1 GB per day, and my hosting company gave me a plan of 1 GB per month... and they want to charge me 7$CDN per extra GB...

Obviously I can't handle to pay 200$/month for this website, so any ideas are more than welcomed. I am downloading the usage logs of the website and will study them tonight to see what's taking so much juice, but it's evident that something will have to be done...

Yes its a known bug.

Have just tried downloading a few pages Nick to see if they are still using quite a lot of white space - they are ! Is it worth hosting certain sections elsewhere, so as to distribute the bandwidth more ?

Well, the only thing I can do is host the images somewhere else... I don't see what else I can do!

Unless I'm starting to find sponsorships...

I blame it all on Sebsy:nod:

Are we looking at money contributions Nicosolas?

Start banning obscene content, like the FCC has suddenly decided to do. That way the most frequent users will be eliminated......oh wait, that includes me :(

Seriously, though, it might not be so bad to have the media stuff on a seperate site (the same thing I suggested back when the media files were causing a near-shutdown due to bandwith or something). That's really the only idea I can bring to the table, and an old one at that

As much as I appreciate everybody's effort to help paying the hosting fees, I just can't see how we can raise 200$ CDN per month!!

Just my little experience, I don't know if it can be useful, I don't thinks so, but you never know... in my small world, I have to open several accounts to host all the stuff on the Gabrielles Wish site. I know your case is very different, but couldn't you do such a thing? Is all that bandwidth caused by the media downloads (can't think of anything else)? Well, then spread all those archives through different accounts. Of course I guess I'm not of any help, but still tried.

If I was going to guess, I'd guess that it's the forums that are consuming most juice, probably because of the way forums are designed (it seems like a huge waste of bandwidth to have to reload an entire page just to get a new post).

I suspect that some of the hard-core NOOLers keep on hitting reload on the topics they are watching, each time creating a new page-load.

One controversial idea could be to limit the number of postings per 24hr period and/or week...

Another, perhaps more controversial, idea could be to merge with WiM... :D

Perhaps having a permanent PayPal like displayed would help the funding. A small banner may not be too bad either... even if it goes against the philosophy. What company wouldn't want to market their product/services to a diverse group of people who love to obsess about New Order 24/7?

BTW: Yahoo started to crawl the web to build their own search index - after dumping Google.

Slight difference. Gab's Pish have 3 (three) fans. Shug has 4 alone !

What about a reality show where NO Online openly pimps for "Mr. Right"...as in "Mr. Willing to Pay Huge Amounts of Money to Keep Site Up"? It'll be set up like "The Bachelor" where we have to pick from 25 millionaires

Or better yet, I'll go on Jeopardy, get about a million dollars during my five-month stint as "Jeopardy Champion", and spilt the profits with NO Online! :thumb:

Sell the site on E-bay. Maybe David Sultan buy it!

Ok, that was no fun...

Spot could sell him a forum all for himself on here; I bet he'd buy that for some good money

Do we need so many forms?

Do we need the chat that is almost never used?

Do we need so much media?

Yikes, they couldn't have been very happy before! The media files I'm hosting for you are doing about 12 gigabytes/day on average.

Obviously I can't handle to pay 200$/month for this website, so any ideas are more than welcomed.

Charge a membership fee...the problem of course is that collecting the money is a pretty bothersome task, even if you have a merchant credit account as well as the server stuff...or find a new provider that's more reasonable (the rates you're being quoted for bandwidth utilization are just absurd), or it it due to needing a Microsoft platform that's limiting your options?

Ways to cut bandwidth and save money:

  1. Lose the Avatars - I like em but they use loads of BW
  2. Ditch chat!
  3. Move media to different servers (or NOOLers who have decent BW!)
  4. Get London Records to pay for the server - LOADED!

The same London Records who are on the verge of losing the Warner control, and who may be forced to ditch their roster (inc the Order) ? Loaded is one thing they ain't.

Get rid of the media...

Would that help?

I was thinking it could be more prominently displayed in places where people visit the most, like the front page and each forum...

If every member donated the amount equal to a cup of coffee, a movie ticket, or pack of cigarettes, then you would get a decent fund to pay for hosting... It works well in theory :)

we'll have to part with whatever it takes to lessen the load. is just looking around taking up bandwith as well (excuse my ignorance here)?

Yeah! Cos it's still downloading temporary files - especially images (unless they are already in your cache)

The media files are not longer hosted on this server guys...

Now, I checked, avatar and other images take lots of bandwidth (5 Gigabytes since we switched to this new version), but the forum pages do take a lot too! 2 Gb ! I did reduce the amounts of thread in a page...

So my next victim will be putting the images somewhere else, then I can't do much, as it's the web pages that generate a lot of bandwidth...!!
