COLOGNE Review

Hi there !

I just got back from the Cologne-Gig where New Order supported Robbie Williams. I thought the faster you get info about it the better ;-) But first some words about the other support acts. "JJ72", well to me nothing more than a bad Placebo-Rip-Off. "ASH" did a good job and played a fast set through most of their singles, but had a horrible live sound... Now to New Order. Well, everyone who thought it was a bad idea to play support for Robbie Williams was fucking RIGHT !!! They entered the stage as a four piece, no Billy Corgan and no Gillian. They started with "Atmosphere" while the background music was still playing...not a very fine beginning. They had massive sound problems. You couldn't hear the keyboards in Regret and Crystal was totally messed up... but i guess halfway through the set they gave up complaining about the bad sound and just wanted to get it over. Not much reaction from the audience, but Barney made a fun out of it and introduced "Your silent face" as a "bavarian love song". Stephen looked quite bored and Hooky got pissed by the lame audience. After ten songs everything was over. Barney announced that they'll be back soon...hopefully with their own headlining-tour.

what are New Order doing supporting Robbie Williams? Who is Robbie Williams? I don't think he's made it to america yet. the gentleman with the complaints at the Ceremony mailing list (selling out to corporate demands) may have a point. Why support some pop star when you could have more fun at the GMEX on your own? Is Robbie Williams on London Records as well? Were there a group of guys shouting Ceremony throughout the gig? I hope the upcoming Tour is not a color by numbers affair like this seems to be.

...it was a strange feeling...the most annoying thing was a guy who was standing right next to me. When they played "LoveWillTearUsApart" he said to his friend "Hey, that's a JoyDivision Song, why do THEY play it?" Arghhh... It's a mystery to me why they agreed to do this gig...but to point out a positive thing..."Your silent face" was nice to hear and "60 mph" is a brilliant second single.

Well, Robbie is some kind of famous in Germany, but not as he is in Britain for instance. I guess the main reason why NewOrder agreed to do this "job" is, that Robbie's audience includes all types of people. There are teens, twenty-somethings and even people far beyond their thirties. I guess that's a thing which has to do the with the policy of their record company. You know, the last "DepecheMode" Album did very well in Germany and maybe they have some kind of plan like "another fossil from the eighties is back", with the hope to sell more records. Another strange thing is that "Crystal" topped the German Alternative-Charts. It's a chart which is done by Clubs, Alternative-Radios and stuff. And New Order became Number ONE leaving bands like Tool, Weezer, Muse and even LimpBizkit behind. I even saw a TV ad for the "Get Ready" Album... I will try to collect some Newspaper stuff or TV footage. I saw, that they were recording the Cologne gig, maybe it get's broadcasted some time.

Hallo Marco, danke fuer deinen Bericht vom Konzert. Was ist wahres an den "Nazi-Anspielungen" die Barney vor the "Silent Face" machte und seiner Aussage: Hey, Ihr moegt diesen Titel? Ich weiss nicht wieso, Ihr kennt den doch nicht mal...?

Von den Anspielungen habe ich nicht viel gehört, lag vielleicht auch daran, daß Barney ziemlich genuschelt hat und der Sound eh so müllig war. Man konnte sowieso kaum was verstehen. Aber um ehrlich zu sein kann ich es schon nachvollziehen, daß NewOrder ziemlich angepisst waren. Bei so einer großen Veranstaltung darf man als Band eigentlich einen technisch einwandfreien Ablauf erwarten... Aber daß das Publikum so abweisend war, fand ich schon sehr krass, bei ASH war es aber nicht viel anders. Anyway, hoffen wir auf eine eigene Deutschland-Tour im Herbst...bye Marco

Also ich finde nicht, dass der Sound so schlecht war, zumindest im zweiten Teil. Dass New Order kaum Elan zeigte ist nur zu veständlich, das Publikum wartete einfach auf Robbie und fast niemand kannte New Order. Nur bei Blue Monday kam so etwas wie Stimmung auf. Anspielungen von Barney hat es nicht gegeben, er fragte die Menge nur, ob sie tanzen möchte oder Marschmusik hören möchte....kein Wunder, bei dem apathischen Publikum....

Was meint Ihr? Kann man den Robbie-Fans hier einen Vorwurf machen??? In Deutschland wurde für das einzigste Robbie Konzert im Sommer 2001 geworben, von anderen Artists war da nur am Rande mal die Rede. Nach Acht Jahre Wartezeit, auf ein Neues Album, können New Order auch nicht ewarten, dass ein hauptsächlich sehr junges Publikum, aus Deutschland, Ihnen in Scharen zujubelt und schon gar nicht, bei einem Robbie Williams Konzert. Für die Band ist solch ein Auftritt total deprimierend und für wirkliche Fans eine Enttäuschung, denn die haben bis zu 90DM für Karten bezahlt. Aber ich poste Euch mal die angeblichen Anspielungen von Barney. (habe ich aus einem anderem Board kopiert)

Before Your Silent Face, Bernard said a risky line: "you'll like this next song, it will remind you of the fresh air, mountains, and marching! And ... oh I better not say that". The crowd did a Mexican wave to You Silent Face, and Bernard says: "You like that one? I don't kow why, you don't fucking even know it".

Also, dem deutschen Publikum kann man eigentlich keinen Vorwurf machen, denn wie man an "unseren" Charts ja sieht, haben die Deutschen absolut keinen Musikgeschmack ;-) Also, ich habe auch 80 DM NUR für NewOrder ausgegeben, Robbie habe ich mir gar nicht mehr angetan. Aber es ist schon deprimierend zu sehen wie eine Band, die sich ihren Erfolg über Jahre erarbeitet hat, von einem ignoranten Publikum total demontiert wird. Ich würde Barney's Sprüche nicht allzu ernst nehmen, daß er ein kleiner Sarkast ist, wissen wir ja alle...oder ??? Und ich fand' daß "Your Silent Face" und "LWTUA" gar nicht so übel rüberkamen.... Am Besten wir vergessen diesen üblen Gig und freuen uns auf die eigene Tour, oder ???

No, no pictures yet. There were several TV shows were footage of the event was shown, but only from Mr.Williams...unfortunateley. BTW, there was an audience of 61.000 people !!!

Es ist schon schön einen "Gleichgesinnten" hier zu treffen, auch ich habe mir Robbie nicht mehr angetan. Von einer Demontage würde ich aber nicht sprechen. Es war nun einmal ein Robbie Williams Konzert und New Order haben ihr Programm routiniert runtergespult. Ich jedenfalls war froh, sie nach 15 Jahren endlich mal live erlebt zu haben, und es wird nicht das letzte mal gewesen sein. Dass Hooky seinen Bass am Schluss in den Verstärker warf war genau das richtige Zeichen zum Gehen!

Meine Worte!!! Ich habe sie das letzte Mal 1993 auf dem Bizarre-Festival gesehen, da spielten sie noch "Dream Attack".

Was hälst Du von "Behind Closed Doors" ???

Ah well, I finally made one my life goals come true, i.e. to see THEM live one day. After almost 20 years of listening to everything they ever did, which made them emotionally very important to me, I even had to carry the burden of a somewhat 60,000 crowd with a lot of horny lassies dreaming of something else, Robbie Williams' hotel room key. So, however bad the sound was, however bad the audience reacted, it was a huge pleasure for me to see New Order. And worst, you all probably read that quote with "... hey, they are playing "love will tear us apart" - that's from Joy Division - home come they play that" , now someone next to me came up with "that used to be a song by Paul Young"... Jesus!!!!! But I guess it was the same lad who lifted his shirt when Robbie Williams did. Bah. Anyway, I finally hope Barney's words at the end of their 45 minutes will quickly come true. Please be back soon!!!!

Also das Bizarre Festival '93 konnte ich leider nicht sehen, weil was dazwischen kam. War das nicht auf der Loreley und hat es da nicht heftig geregnet?

"Behind Closed Doors" finde ich auch klasse, hätte gut auf "Get Ready" gepasst und wäre dort nicht das schlechteste Stück gewesen...

P.S.: Hab' gerade mal in "Mother of Creation" reingehört....- Kritik folgt dann später :)
