Avatars & other options — Forum Archive

I'll work this week-end of putting the forum on a diet for overuse of bandwidth, but you have probably noticed that avatars are GONE.

Yes, they are gone, now you must find a host for them! simply go to the profile editor, and in the account options, you will be able to enter a URL for a GIF or JPEG file.

Just for the record, try to avoid putting a way too large file, because RIGHT NOW, there is no limitations, but you can be sure that my tomorrow, I'll try to find a way to resize the image to the right size, but I don't want to screw smaller pictures, so I'll leave it this way for now...

This should reduce bandwidth usage a lot.. but will force me to do more maintenance, as, well, many people will have avatars that won't work after a while, etc.

I will change the option page to be a lot better this week-end, and I'll probably put a few default "neworderwish" avatars for those not able to get one, they won't be hosted here, but you'll be able to use them.

Any ideas are more than welcomed at this point.

it worked well here. i had to resize the picture because it was too damn large! :rolleyes:

Sure... as long as it doesn't increare the length of the column, it's ok.. mine is 125 pixels wide.

I'm happy we're saving avatars and smilies, they're part of what gives this forum (and its members) an identity... By the way Spotnick your new avatar is really cool, always adored that Spooky video... Should unfortunately happen (and I hope it doesn't) that this forum can't go on, I suggest all the members vote through a poll a new place (mailing list, other forum, UseNet or whatever) where we all can meet again. I'd suggest creating a NewOrderOnline Yahoo! Group, though I'd miss my Weebl avatar! :wink:

They all work, but not always... I could see my Weebl only half of the times... must be because of the poor bandwidth on our free servers... Now I linked directly from the Weebl site (hope they don't mind :D ) and it seems to work OK.

Of course no need to bring back the Brotherhood group now, I was just talking about a place to move this forum members (that's why I thought of a new NewOrderOnline Yahoo! group and not those already existing... since there are about five or six, all dead...) if one day (not now) there's the need to do it.

Nah, the website won't go down, I'm pretty sure the bandwidth usage will discrease with the changes I have done.. if my ISP doesn't let me overuse their bandwidth, I'll probably put them on MY server at home, the only "problem" will be for people behind firewall blocking other ports than 80.. but as long as it's only images, it's not that bad.

Anyone can open a free account at Angelfire to upload an avatar. It has been working fine for me so far.
