So to get back to the topic....
I've always preferred the 7" version myself. It's a much tighter arrangement and Barney's vocals are much more restrained which makes it more connected to the earlier 80-81 works rather than to the later era. They did a great live version on Riverside I seem to recall.

I love the way the Taras version starts, almost became a reprise of Truth until a most likely panicked Gillian made some adjustments. The mic shock is fantastic too, I laugh my head off everytime, at his angry reaction, and the pissed up look he gives the mic stand 
The way they leave stage leaving the sequencer in a loop, leaving the roadies to deal with it. Where is that Delorean when I need it...
I like both, but prefer the '87 version for the vocal and the bass playing which I consider superior, I also like how it sounds towards the end, a crescendo of crunching guitars playing over one another. Good stuff. They're just totally different tunes, the one flaw to me with the '87 version is the thrumping synth line that sounds too peculiar, almost not like a synth, and certainly not like later live versions which seemed to skew more toward the '82 sound.
Still, the original is my favorite, and I find the original Confusion to be ghastly, but I don't like the song at all to begin with so my opinion on it probably serves no ones interest.

Indeed it must have been most disappointing to discover that the band had thought that after all those years had elapsed they could be so audacious as to think they could have actually IMPROVED as musicians a horrifyingly shocking concept 
I agree that the 87 version is perhaps more 'polished', clearer and truer to the live version - however, does that make the track "better"?
The original, with 'real' sounding drums and the primitive synths/sequencers, and of course Barney's more deadpan delivery make it more appealing - the beauty of it is of course in the eye of the beholder!
The 87 version doesn't have any soul, it just feels very plastic to me. I played it yesterday and it reminded me how much I dislike it. The keyboard sequencer line sounds all wrong to me.
For me it has to be the original 12" followed by 98 folowed by original 7", last is 87.
I'll give you an example of the difference. A friend of mine was only familiar with 87 from the Trainspotting soundtrack and she wasn't impressed. I did her a compilation to educate her in the error of her ways and 98 was the first track. She listened to it on the way home from the pub and texted me straight away enthusing about it and how it wiped the floor with 87.
I don't think that was a shock he got from the mic, just a petulant display of anger (for what it's worth)

Agreed. Although I think the 1998 version is too short... it's a great version but it cuts out of lot of the lyrics towards the end. And I really like the long-windy intro on the 1982 version. The guitars don't overpower the keyboards on the original, the only down side to that version is that Barney's vocals are a bit piss-poor!

I think the polishing and improvements took away from its soul. The original is the best studio version, Taras the best live version, and most live versions better than the 87 even if they are the same in structure. Live better than studio IMHO assuming there is a decent live recording.
Watching Taras is a privilege that few fans ever get. The birth of a song, the birth of arguably their greatest song.
