The paradox continues - doesn't one get to an age - 40? - where one says ok - enough is enough.

Time to take down those pictures and put away the OLD lps or cds that stacked so wonderfully well and can't be touched by anyone else - not even the dog.

MOVE onto something different - perhaps even - something better?

Like the band themselves have ?

Its subjective, if people still derive enjoyment from their collection then for them to deprive themselves of it would be detrimental to their happiness....

Its not all bad news. If you start licking the inside of marmite lids then you will build up an immunity to ice cream stick attacks in due course.

Well, I'd say maybe if the band never produced any new material, but at least it's going on...

I have phases where I don't listen to it, then, probably because of this website, I get back to it and listen to it a lot.

Right now, I don't listen to it, I've been however listening to a lot of the covers done, does that count?

But do I feel like someday I'll give up that for classical music?

Nah...

What if I defend myself using teflon coated pans? Or is that against the treaty?

well strictly speaking it is, but there is a loophole in the clause which allows red handled pans to be used. Be warned though to obtain these pans you must travel on a torturous journey through wind, ice, rain and snow. God speed.

How about if i bow to the god of cheese graters and uphold the stance of the "only cooks one side" toaster? It's a morphy richards coolwall you know. Surely that gives me some respect?!

Shhh! dont speak so freely of the almighty morphy richards, you never know who's listening... :skeptic:

you indeed have a powerful weapon, my advice is to collect the tokens of kellog and take them to the "asda" there you will receive news of how the unmentionable richards can be adapted for battle. May the force be with you.

 Exactly. There have been important bands in my past I don't listen to anymore, it may happen with less important bands, but not with the band being by far the most for so many years, not at all, I don't see it happening, also because I don't over-listen to New Order... in this period I'm hearing them, Brotherhood especially (because there are many great songs I had underrated, like Way Of Life), but there are weeks and weeks when I never play them. Anyway I don't say it's impossible to move on, but it won't really happen just because I'm growing... also because there's fookin nowhere to move on today! In the 90s I tried desperately to believe there could be some great contemporary music, I couldn't face the fact I was in my 20s and all the best happened when I was younger (though at least there was a great scene in Italy), I even gave a chance to Britpop (Parklife Blur, Shed fookin 7, for fucksake!) but then accepted the fact it was all shit and even the few good bands around, like Flying Saucer Attack or Long Fin Killie, were so inferior to the best band of the 80s (with the only exception of Ga... oh, do I have to say their name again? ;) ). The more I looked for something new, the more I understood how the bands I was already a fan of were so special... and I also noticed how the best records of the 90s were being made by artists who emerged in the 80s, like Bjork. Now I have accepted the fact that music has reached a decline and I'm happy to discover great music from the past, recently I bought PIL's first issue and it's best than buying any record released last year by bands who've made their debut in the last five years. I think the turning point was when, after one more disappointment I realised I had only one album by Steely Dan and I was still buying albums by crap new bands though I loved Steely Dan... I told myself: wait a fookin minute, it doesn't matter if those records were released in the 70s, complete their fookin discography before buying those young wankers' records again. So great music is always great music, and I don't really see myself saying Blue Monday, Perfect Kiss, true Faith, Vanishing Point or Crystal aren't great music, as old as I can grow.

Eh, doh, yes obviously you can go on listening to what the fuck you want to, but I assume that Mr Parkin was asking for a discussion, not telling us what to do?

Personally, I stopped listening to New Order after Substance, and moved on, I guess I was mid-30's then. In fact I just stopped actively listening to music at all around 40, as I just wanted to clear my head out completely. A few years ago, though (I'm 49 now) I started getting drawn back in again, heard Crystal, liked it and have spent the last few years catching up. It's been great fun. But without any new product, remixes, collaborations (I've checked them all out), you just have to cast your net wider - there's just too much good music to spend your whole life listening to NO.

So, yes, I'll listen to what the fuck I want to, too. But I WILL move on and keep touching base (bass!) to see what's occurring.

My sentiments exactly, Major. The only type of music you should grow out of is boy band-type pop, which you should stop listening to when you hit 13. Otherwise, listen to whatever you want and ignore anyone who criticises you.

Why forty?

Does this mean that on 15th August 2023 i should just throw all my cd's on the fire? I suppose you should grow out of childish bands i.e the D*rkness but whats wrong with listening to sensible bands even if you're getting on a bit?

i listen to loads of music, and i play music, which means that a lot of my cash goes to other things than my NO collection (which is tiny, beyond the albums). so if "moving on" means forgetting about music all togehter, i don't really think there will ever be a time for me to do that. but, say if i did nothing but listen, collect, and play NO/JD stuff, i'm affraid i'd burning myself out in time.

In that long period of absence 93-2001 I tried moving on. For a while I didn't even listen to any NO. Never quite managed it though. There simply wasn't anything else to fill the void, or that compared. So, I daresay I'll never move on.

In some ways, I think Greggy has a point; when you get older, certain things that you liked as a kid get old and you get over them. But....there's a difference between New Order and Wang Chung.

When I was eight-ish, Wang Chung was the shit, as well as Rick Assley, Peabo Bryson, Wham........you'll notice that this site isn't www.peabobrysononline.com

My point is, some stuff is good to give up on: Top Forty radio, Chuck Norris, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Smurfs, A-Team. That makes the way for Stanley Kubrick, alternative radio, South Park, Rushmore, New Order, and Harry Pott....I mean, "The Lord of The Rings".

It's all a matter of perception, Greg: if you think New Order is "immature", then go ahead and stop listening to them. Contrary to what a lot of people might say, no one's gonna show up at your place at 3 in the morning blasting "Temptation". That's your perogative, to quote a late-Eighties philosopher whose name escapes me. But for now, I'll hold on to New Order. You always hold onto the things that matter to you, whether it's a silly little rock band or a fantastic musical experience. What New Order is to you might be different from what they are to me. That's just the way it is, pal.

And what if becoming a New Order fan was already moving on? I mean, there are so many music listeners so narrow minded they can't get New Order: they're too pop to appeal to the hardcore punks, they're too alternative to appeal to the classic pop fans, they're too electronic to appeal to the rock'n'roll fans, they're too rock'n'roll to appeal to the strict electronica fans. Being a New Order fan means you're open minded, you can enjoy the guitar, but you can also enjoy the keyboard, you can enjoy dance, but you also wanna rock... for us it's obvious, but the most of the people out there miss a lot of the great music around because they only like one kind of music (who listens to the Pixies AND Steely Dan? Being able to knock down barriers and enjoy both is moving on...). When you evolve that much your musical taste, you can discover other things, but it's hard giving up the best you have reached. In Italy you'll find many Joy Division fans who dislike New Order for selling out. I was one of them. Then I felt the magnificence of their music, all their music, not just Movement, the only album you can hear if you're a sad goth, but all the others as well, how it's beautiful on Technique to have great guitar based songs like Run and emotional techno like Vanishing Point, how the synthetic can be as powerful and soulful as the guitar. That was moving on for me, and I wish more people moved on.

:) thank you for the applause. Sometimes I think about it, some things for us are obvious but they're pretty special in fact... I mean, there are people not even buying any records, they just listen to the radio on the car stereo while going to work, that's all their musical experience... they don't even imagine what music can make you feel, especially New Order's music. The same about being open minded...

No it's alright to have fans with different opinions. New Order are great because for every song you'll find someone who likes it and another who doesn't. That means everything they did has a value. I think everyone who posts here likes a lot of New Order stuff, even Greg (good he appreciated my post :p ) who says to move on but I guess he doesn't mean forgetting the band at all, does he? The only problem is at alt.music.new-order, where it looked like I was the only one who likes New Order and side projects after 1993. Fortunately after my call a couple of other members replied and it seems I'm not the only one to like Superhighways or Get Ready, it would be pretty weird if I was...

I think Greg might be mistaking us with those teenage girls wetting themselves the minute Clay Aiken/Backstreet Boys/NSuck/New Kids on the Block/Menudo appear onscreen. We're not as shallow as those idiots, thus why we still like NO even though some of us (Rocket Mick) are pushing 80. :D

As long as i will live i will love New Order as much as I love Glasgow Celtic. No higher sentiment needed!

I cannae imagine life without the Order, and the amount of hours of joy they have given me is beyond belief! I tried to write a story on what neworder meant to me it lasted 20 pages and 15,000 words and I still didnae touch the surface.

All the people that slag them down can go get fucked. Neworder till I die!

This is *almost* a good question, in that it's started me thinking about my relationship to JD/NO vs my relationship to other music that I've loved or left behind. The weak point of the question is the age thing, which is clearly irrelevant. But to be honest sometimes music simple doesn't work in the same way that it used to and it's interesting to try and figure out why not. Or why it still does.

I'm 42. I was around right from the start, saw JD live many times and for years and years thought that nothing would ever top JD and the early days of NO. The JD/NO/Factory approach is so much part of my growing up that it's almost unfair to compare other stuff with it. The important thing for me is that I have to be discovering something in music all the time. I don't necc mean *new* music, I mean 'new to me'. I've been immersed in soul/funk/electronica/dub/reggae/psychedelia etc for a while now and that's all competing for air time with my Fac/post-punk stuff. I wouldn't have it any other way, but it means that I'm really not interested in spinning my wheels listening to 50 New Order bootlegs when I could spend my time listening to 50 completely different artists. There's a time when I would have gone for the bootlegs, although it's long past! Maybe that makes me less of a fan than many on this site? I'd say different, rather than less, but no big deal.

I realise that I haven't really answered the question that I (re)posed but I have to bugger off to a meeting for the next hour or so, so apologies for cutting this short....will be back.

Its like the ebb and flow of the tides, the music of NO & JD will always be special to me, but naturally you pick up other things along the way, some good, others not so, (whether thats other music, interests - whatever) and this inevitably cuts into your 'listening' time. Was a compulsive, hungry fan in the early/mid 80's, as you do when you are an adolescent. As their music took a turn in the late 80's and early 90's, I sort of lost interest (assisted no doubt by new family etc) and other 'distractions', just growing up I suppose.

I don't think it is ever as black & white as saying once I get to xx age I will put all my stuff away, their music will always be there in a special place, but that does not mean you can't appreciate other good music (of which, by the way, there is plenty out there for those who can be bothered to seek it out).

As with any music you grow up with, it leaves an indelible mark on you - I prefer to remember NO as I saw them live and recall the anticipation of buying new releases by reading in the NME or hearing something on the radio - the build up to releases thru the internet these days removes that element.

I also think that even though they probably still cut it live (haven't seen them since '87), why the fook does Barney now use an autocue:nonono:....karaoke cabaret nowadays...

s'pose that makes me less of a 'fan' then...

i think the music you listen to in your late teens and early 20s will always leave a mark on you, probably a bigger one than anything you listen to after 25. i grew up listening to a lot rock music of the mid 90s and late 90s and those bands will always have a special place for me even when i grow out of it. i think it's the fresh naivte to music that you can't get back. i think i'm a bit jaded when i listen to the current music. i go, "yeah, i spot that influence, they sound like so and so" and you're not like that when you're 16 years old dreaming up of cds you want and spending hours with music magazines.

i think i've moved past new order, and that's why i don't post as much here cuz i feel i don't have much to say about them. i was crazy about them for a good 2 years and i think i just burnt out. that happens. the music doesn't feel the same anymore. i would never sell my cds because they're such a huge part of me, but i just listen to them less. it's sad when passion for a band like that fades, but what can you do? you move on and discover other things to be obsessed with. i hardly listen to any music now, and i'm a big french cinema geek who reads tons of books on truffaut and jean-luc godard. and one day, i'll get bored of french cinema and i'll dust off my new order collection.:smoking:

Four quick points:

1 Uncle Liam - NO know they are fat bastards. Doesn't mean they can't play:laugh: 2. Tabboo - Of course you aren't "shallow" - most NO/JD fans are anything but. 3. D.C. - I think age is important - one merely has to look at other threads and topics to see that it does - whether young or old.Ich verstehe nicht:\ohwell: 4. The Don - I'll frign answer your question when you get that hot woman off.......

in fact, (weirdo), you've answered the question yourself with the "epilogue" to your thread -

how can life keep getting strange if the strange remains bottled and stagnant? What is "strange?": listening to another NO remix or cover?

"Profounds of mind. Buried in who knows what profounds of mind. Of mindlessness. Whither no light can reach. No sound. So sat on as though turned to stone. The sad tale a last time told" S.Beckett: Ohio Impromptu

From this quote - don't let ONE band shut out the light or the sound until you are absoulutely certain you have heard everything - which of course, is absurd.

For frig sake - parallel my topics - I am as much a NO fan as anyone - to criticise and "blaspheme" about them is a mutual condition of this relationship. Otherwise, as I mentioned earlier, life becomes a series of unmotivated motives for living.

I adore JD/NO but there does come a point - where one some-how loses interest in OTHER things.

Great responses by all.

Cheers,

Greggy-boy.

Interesting topic. I've wondered how other people have felt about this. If the internet had come around about six years earlier (at least in terms of mass availability and usage) then I would have been FAR FAR more involved in the New Order Forums. However like probably quite a few fans, I waited a long time, quite eagerly for the release of Republic, listening to New Order record after New Order record year after year after year over and over again and then Republic came out, and it was like the metaphorical Geraldo Empty Vault moment. A complete let down, made even worse by the release of a very good single a month preceeding the album release. By '94 I stopped the endless rotation of New Order records and moved on. New Order found it's way into my walkman and my car stereo as always from time to time, but nowhere even remotely as often as before. Technique, Substance, Low-Life and PCL remained treasured musical booty, but still booty that was stowed away most of the time while I searched for new interests, developing an interest in blues, in fifties jazz, in Johnny Cash, emmylou Harris and O' Brother where art thou, but no other country-ish music, and developing interests in the new bands that captured my fancy over the years.

New Order has always remained a treasure, but I also found treasures in Saint Etienne, Radiohead, The Orange Peels, Beatles records, Zeppelin, CCR, Creem, British Invasion stuff, Billie Holiday, The Zombies (my favorite relatively undiscovered british invasion band), Bob Marley, Matt Ward, old doo-wop, and even pre-break down Beach Boys records. There is cr@ploads and cr@ploads of brilliant music, and I'm gonna keep searching each and every day for the latest discovery that can transform my days.

New Order will always remain, MY BAND, my 1.) favorite band, but the days of me nearly keeping them on permanent rotation, of throwing on Age of Consent, or Thieves like Us, or 1963, or Run or whatever almost every day are over. I listen when I'm in the mood but not otherwise.

How have you dealt w/being a New Order fan in the nineties and now the 21st century?

Clockwork, that's just the trouble isn't it. Once one has discovered the Order and truely appreciates it, one comes to realise just how crap most other music is.

I suppose there would be more support around here for the idea of growing out of JD than growing out of NO. After all, the depressing dirges of later JD stuff is generally seen as belonging to the young teenage angst years, right right? On the other hand, NO's poppy beats are more life-affirming and generally less serious than JD's music, so it can be the soundtrack to a long life of football, boozing, and everything in between. (NOTE: I personally forsee a relatively long life for myself filled with teenage angst and don't suppose I'll have fully left JD behind once I get to the age of a lot of you, so I'm just playing devil's advocate here.)
