The paradox continues - doesn't one get to an age - 40? - where one says ok - enough is enough.

Time to take down those pictures and put away the OLD lps or cds that stacked so wonderfully well and can't be touched by anyone else - not even the dog.

MOVE onto something different - perhaps even - something better?

Like the band themselves have ?

Its subjective, if people still derive enjoyment from their collection then for them to deprive themselves of it would be detrimental to their happiness....

Its not all bad news. If you start licking the inside of marmite lids then you will build up an immunity to ice cream stick attacks in due course.

well strictly speaking it is, but there is a loophole in the clause which allows red handled pans to be used. Be warned though to obtain these pans you must travel on a torturous journey through wind, ice, rain and snow. God speed.

Exactly. There have been important bands in my past I don't listen to anymore, it may happen with less important bands, but not with the band being by far the most for so many years, not at all, I don't see it happening, also because I don't over-listen to New Order... in this period I'm hearing them, Brotherhood especially (because there are many great songs I had underrated, like Way Of Life), but there are weeks and weeks when I never play them. The more I looked for something new, the more I understood how the bands I was already a fan of were so special... and I also noticed how the best records of the 90s were being made by artists who emerged in the 80s, like Bjork. Now I have accepted the fact that music has reached a decline and I'm happy to discover great music from the past, recently I bought PIL's first issue and it's best than buying any record released last year by bands who've made their debut in the last five years. I think the turning point was when, after one more disappointment I realised I had only one album by Steely Dan and I was still buying albums by crap new bands though I loved Steely Dan... I told myself: wait a fookin minute, it doesn't matter if those records were released in the 70s, complete their fookin discography before buying those young wankers' records again. So great music is always great music, and I don't really see myself saying Blue Monday, Perfect Kiss, true Faith, Vanishing Point or Crystal aren't great music, as old as I can grow.

Personally, I stopped listening to New Order after Substance, and moved on, I guess I was mid-30's then. In fact I just stopped actively listening to music at all around 40, as I just wanted to clear my head out completely. A few years ago, though (I'm 49 now) I started getting drawn back in again, heard Crystal, liked it and have spent the last few years catching up. It's been great fun. But without any new product, remixes, collaborations (I've checked them all out), you just have to cast your net wider - there's just too much good music to spend your whole life listening to NO.

So, yes, I'll listen to what the fuck I want to, too. But I WILL move on and keep touching base (bass!) to see what's occurring.

My sentiments exactly, Major. The only type of music you should grow out of is boy band-type pop, which you should stop listening to when you hit 13. Otherwise, listen to whatever you want and ignore anyone who criticises you.

Does this mean that when you were 13 you were listening to boy band pop shelley?

Does this mean that on 15th August 2023 i should just throw all my cd's on the fire? I suppose you should grow out of childish bands i.e the D*rkness but whats wrong with listening to sensible bands even if you're getting on a bit?

I have already been to this crossroads,i sold everything to buy my first house-then started buying everything again. Its not a good thing cos theres stuff i dont have now.

i listen to loads of music, and i play music, which means that a lot of my cash goes to other things than my NO collection (which is tiny, beyond the albums). so if "moving on" means forgetting about music all togehter, i don't really think there will ever be a time for me to do that. but, say if i did nothing but listen, collect, and play NO/JD stuff, i'm affraid i'd burning myself out in time.

In that long period of absence 93-2001 I tried moving on. For a while I didn't even listen to any NO. Never quite managed it though. There simply wasn't anything else to fill the void, or that compared. So, I daresay I'll never move on.

In some ways, I think Greggy has a point; when you get older, certain things that you liked as a kid get old and you get over them. But....there's a difference between New Order and Wang Chung.

When I was eight-ish, Wang Chung was the shit, as well as Rick Assley, Peabo Bryson, Wham........you'll notice that this site isn't www.peabobrysononline.com

My point is, some stuff is good to give up on: Top Forty radio, Chuck Norris, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, The Smurfs, A-Team. That makes the way for Stanley Kubrick, alternative radio, South Park, Rushmore, New Order, and Harry Pott....I mean, "The Lord of The Rings".

It's all a matter of perception, Greg: if you think New Order is "immature", then go ahead and stop listening to them. Contrary to what a lot of people might say, no one's gonna show up at your place at 3 in the morning blasting "Temptation". That's your perogative, to quote a late-Eighties philosopher whose name escapes me. But for now, I'll hold on to New Order. You always hold onto the things that matter to you, whether it's a silly little rock band or a fantastic musical experience. What New Order is to you might be different from what they are to me. That's just the way it is, pal.

And what if becoming a New Order fan was already moving on? I mean, there are so many music listeners so narrow minded they can't get New Order: they're too pop to appeal to the hardcore punks, they're too alternative to appeal to the classic pop fans, they're too electronic to appeal to the rock'n'roll fans, they're too rock'n'roll to appeal to the strict electronica fans. Being a New Order fan means you're open minded, you can enjoy the guitar, but you can also enjoy the keyboard, you can enjoy dance, but you also wanna rock... for us it's obvious, but the most of the people out there miss a lot of the great music around because they only like one kind of music (who listens to the Pixies AND Steely Dan? Being able to knock down barriers and enjoy both is moving on...). When you evolve that much your musical taste, you can discover other things, but it's hard giving up the best you have reached. In Italy you'll find many Joy Division fans who dislike New Order for selling out. I was one of them. Then I felt the magnificence of their music, all their music, not just Movement, the only album you can hear if you're a sad goth, but all the others as well, how it's beautiful on Technique to have great guitar based songs like Run and emotional techno like Vanishing Point, how the synthetic can be as powerful and soulful as the guitar. That was moving on for me, and I wish more people moved on.
