:) thank you for the applause. Sometimes I think about it, some things for us are obvious but they're pretty special in fact... I mean, there are people not even buying any records, they just listen to the radio on the car stereo while going to work, that's all their musical experience... they don't even imagine what music can make you feel, especially New Order's music. The same about being open minded...

I hit 40 in May and will never put my JD/NO stuff away.

Name the time & place. 3 am is a bit late for me these days. Yes I do have a small car.

No it's alright to have fans with different opinions. New Order are great because for every song you'll find someone who likes it and another who doesn't. That means everything they did has a value. I think everyone who posts here likes a lot of New Order stuff, even Greg (good he appreciated my post :p ) who says to move on but I guess he doesn't mean forgetting the band at all, does he? The only problem is at alt.music.new-order, where it looked like I was the only one who likes New Order and side projects after 1993. Fortunately after my call a couple of other members replied and it seems I'm not the only one to like Superhighways or Get Ready, it would be pretty weird if I was...

This is *almost* a good question, in that it's started me thinking about my relationship to JD/NO vs my relationship to other music that I've loved or left behind. The weak point of the question is the age thing, which is clearly irrelevant. But to be honest sometimes music simple doesn't work in the same way that it used to and it's interesting to try and figure out why not. Or why it still does.

I'm 42. I was around right from the start, saw JD live many times and for years and years thought that nothing would ever top JD and the early days of NO. The JD/NO/Factory approach is so much part of my growing up that it's almost unfair to compare other stuff with it. The important thing for me is that I have to be discovering something in music all the time. I don't necc mean *new* music, I mean 'new to me'. I've been immersed in soul/funk/electronica/dub/reggae/psychedelia etc for a while now and that's all competing for air time with my Fac/post-punk stuff. I wouldn't have it any other way, but it means that I'm really not interested in spinning my wheels listening to 50 New Order bootlegs when I could spend my time listening to 50 completely different artists. There's a time when I would have gone for the bootlegs, although it's long past! Maybe that makes me less of a fan than many on this site? I'd say different, rather than less, but no big deal.

I realise that I haven't really answered the question that I (re)posed but I have to bugger off to a meeting for the next hour or so, so apologies for cutting this short....will be back.

Its like the ebb and flow of the tides, the music of NO & JD will always be special to me, but naturally you pick up other things along the way, some good, others not so, (whether thats other music, interests - whatever) and this inevitably cuts into your 'listening' time. Was a compulsive, hungry fan in the early/mid 80's, as you do when you are an adolescent. As their music took a turn in the late 80's and early 90's, I sort of lost interest (assisted no doubt by new family etc) and other 'distractions', just growing up I suppose.

I don't think it is ever as black & white as saying once I get to xx age I will put all my stuff away, their music will always be there in a special place, but that does not mean you can't appreciate other good music (of which, by the way, there is plenty out there for those who can be bothered to seek it out).

As with any music you grow up with, it leaves an indelible mark on you - I prefer to remember NO as I saw them live and recall the anticipation of buying new releases by reading in the NME or hearing something on the radio - the build up to releases thru the internet these days removes that element.

I also think that even though they probably still cut it live (haven't seen them since '87), why the fook does Barney now use an autocue....karaoke cabaret nowadays...

s'pose that makes me less of a 'fan' then...

what are you "supposed" to listen to when you get older then? is it a sheep following the herd syndrome or is there a scientific reason you should stop listening to certain types of music...

i think the music you listen to in your late teens and early 20s will always leave a mark on you, probably a bigger one than anything you listen to after 25. i grew up listening to a lot rock music of the mid 90s and late 90s and those bands will always have a special place for me even when i grow out of it. i think it's the fresh naivte to music that you can't get back. i think i'm a bit jaded when i listen to the current music. i go, "yeah, i spot that influence, they sound like so and so" and you're not like that when you're 16 years old dreaming up of cds you want and spending hours with music magazines.

i think i've moved past new order, and that's why i don't post as much here cuz i feel i don't have much to say about them. i was crazy about them for a good 2 years and i think i just burnt out. that happens. the music doesn't feel the same anymore. i would never sell my cds because they're such a huge part of me, but i just listen to them less. it's sad when passion for a band like that fades, but what can you do? you move on and discover other things to be obsessed with. i hardly listen to any music now, and i'm a big french cinema geek who reads tons of books on truffaut and jean-luc godard. and one day, i'll get bored of french cinema and i'll dust off my new order collection.

Four quick points:

1 Uncle Liam - NO know they are fat bastards. Doesn't mean they can't play 2. Tabboo - Of course you aren't "shallow" - most NO/JD fans are anything but. 3. D.C. - I think age is important - one merely has to look at other threads and topics to see that it does - whether young or old.Ich verstehe nicht:\ohwell: 4. From this quote - don't let ONE band shut out the light or the sound until you are absoulutely certain you have heard everything - which of course, is absurd.

For frig sake - parallel my topics - I am as much a NO fan as anyone - to criticise and "blaspheme" about them is a mutual condition of this relationship. Otherwise, as I mentioned earlier, life becomes a series of unmotivated motives for living.

I adore JD/NO but there does come a point - where one some-how loses interest in OTHER things.
