The 'Official' New Order debate

It seems that many members are trying to pass the 'side projects' of New Order as credible ventures. Personally, I put this down to misplaced faith, as time has told, nothing comes close... and mostly all projects outside the 'official' New Order band have been shite.

I challenge anyone to disprove the following:

A) Electronic sounded (and do sound) like Barney singing weak songs alongside a portasound.

B) Revenge were comparable to a 10 year old kid recording school songs with the bass guitar too high.

C) The Other Two bottled it and chanelled everything through cutesy sounds, forgetting to put the 'meat' in the songs.

"There's only one New Order" - as true fans, who are you trying to kid?

(if any members and/or associated members of the aformentioned bands read anything on this website - sos, but you know its true).

I like Electronic, and I have to look at them as a different group, rather than a side project. You are right to an extent, if you look at the "side projects" as a comparison to New Order you will almost certainly be disappointed (lol, Electronic link! ho ho), but it doesnt stop the groups from having some stature of their own. As for Revenge, Monaco and The Other Two, im not a fan, have tried to get into them, but have failed miserably....I guess its the combination of them all together that rocks me.

I still put "Getting away with it" on my list of top 10 songs of all time, regardless of whether Electronic match up to New Order. Personally, give me New Order anyday over any other groups, but i can still appreciate other music they make, with or without their band mates....

I dont think any other group could compare, but thats because im a fan, and just because you cant always afford Champagne, its doesnt stop you drinking (and enjoying) Asti Spumante at times.... lol

I agree with you 100% on this. "Getting away with with it" has to be on that top 10 list! As far as being a NO fan I can listen to them anytime, anyday over any group, but I can also appreciate there side projects and being able to venture out there. :) I will have to say Electronic would take the top spot in side projects with The Other Two, than Monaco.

Electronic's first album is wonderful. Better than Republic in my opinion. The lack of real bass lines does make the sound thin but do you really equate Sumner and Marr to portasound? Seriously? Lyrically, Electronic's first album is more solid than Get Ready. Do you own the Electronic album? Listen to Tighten Up.

Put it this way - would you have honestly preferred NO to continue after Republic, clearly with no interest in what they were doing (and eventually self-combusting) OR allowing them the luxury of (in some cases substandard) "solo projects" to help them realise NO are where their strengths lie, and return to it invigorated, as they have done? I agree with Brian...Electronic's debut knocked spots of Republic in my humble opinion both lyrically and musically. That said Revenge were pretty shite(though I saw them live at a venue called the Witchwood in Ashton-under-Lyne a venue that could most politley be described as,well,cosy and Hooky did an ace version of Broken Promises ) The Other Two were too sacharrine sweet and Monaco...don't even get me started !!!

I almost hate to admit it but a dance/pop station here in Seattle plays Selfish from the Other Two with disturbing frequency and I always turn it up. A bit cheesy but fun. Music brings happiness in many ways without always being Important or Ground Breaking.

Have to agree with Liv : "Getting Away With It", no matter who did it, is an incredible song, just perfect. And songs like "Get The Message", "Tighten Up" and "Patience of a Saint" are certainly no fillers. In fact, I think they really are great songs, not just ok songs.

As for "Forbidden City", 1st time I heard it on the radio, I was like "that's great, who sings that ?" I'm very ashamed I didn't recognize Barney's voice but it was so different from the "Electronic" LP.

I think Electronic is by far the best project involving NO members (so I don't have to mention "side projects"). Although I liked Revenge very first single, "7 Reasons".

By the way, am I the only one to notice that the "back to guitars" of "Get Ready" and "Brutal" is pretty similar, in principle, to Electronic's "Twisted Tenderness" ?

I really enjoy the side projects especially Electronic. I am also a fan of The Smiths and Johnny Marr. I think it was brilliant to put Barney's voice and guitar with that of Johnny Marr.
I think that 'Getting Away With It' is one of my favorite songs as well. I loved the first 2 albums more than I like a couple of New Order albums (Twisted Tenderness was good, but not the same). This doesn't make me less of a New Order fan but it surely keeps me happy in between NO albums..!
