Public notice:

The network admin has decided to restrain the bandwidth allowed to NewOrderOnline. You may find out that the site is becoming INCREDIBLY SLOW. I am wondering if it's just me or if it's now a permanent state

So if you have to wait for minutes and minutes for pages to display or if, even, some jpg or gif images do not even appear on the screen, leaving a red "X" instead, or if you get "Page doesn't exist" or "Error 500" messages, you'd be kind to let us know here.

If it becomes a permanent state, we may have no choice but to take off most of the multimedia sites (these are causing much, much harm to this site's speed, and anyway, a LOT of people are coming in only to leech them and don't give a damn about the rest of the site).

Just curious... where is your site being hosted from? Who's restricting your bandwidth?

Maybe some of use could offer some space/bandwidth to host parts of the site? I'd offer some, but I don't have any to offer.

I noticed sometimes now I get a "page cannot be displayed" error 500, but hitting the refresh button generally solves the problem.

that's the way, Jef, nuke the bastards!! It is true , there are times that it is almost impossible to view pages on NOonline, happens to me a lot of times actually. Drives me fooking mad. Also, in spite of the selected "log me in automatically...", that seldomly happens. Another thing, maybe it's just my lack of compu-wisdom, but i can't manage to Quote from a thread when i replie! I getr the notification that the page is not available. Well that's it. No more.

The website is hosted in Montreal by a private company where Nicolas is working. Their server and bandwidth is used for many other tasks, and therefore, NewOrderOnline is FAR from being their priority there since they are GRACIOUSLY hosting the website (meaning: for free).

We shopped a lot for a new server before we launched NewOrderOnline v2.0 and to have the same type of server, with the same features (SQL database, for instance) with a large bandwidth, and ESPECIALLY with the same hard disk space allowed, it would mean that we would have to get our own DEDICATED SERVER at a rate of +/- 300$ in U.S. currencies A MONTH.

Now, personally, I feel I've already gave too much to this website (in time and EVEN money!!!!!), so there is absolutely no way I'm gonna pay another cent for it, and there's no way any type of publicity on the site would generate enough revenues to cover such charges.

The server needed for NewOrderOnline a we know it today would be a high-profile cybercommerce server. It's just out of our reach. It's quite simple.

So until further notice, Nicolas and I have decided to take every MP3 file off the website, and it might even turn out that we take off several other multimedia files.

We'll see what happens, then.

Besides, most often-visited musical group fans websites do not offer ANY multimedia files. I'm especially referring to The Cure's Chain of Flowers (which has an incredible following and has been an open inspiration for us -- way to go Craig Parker!), Halo's Depeche Mode website, and even Moby Online which is SO MINIMALISTIC and still gathers an incredible amount of traffic (the forums there have hundreds of new messages each day).

If the New Order fans are just leechers and bootleggers, well.... f*** them! So far, I would have a tendency to think so because on more than 2600 members for the site, only a few of them are actually posting messages on the forums. Most of them are after the MP3s. we didn't know that initially, but now that we DO, well... we'll counter-attack.

The Webmasters Have Spoken.

Seb & Nic, us hard core fans will find ways of sharing the files with each other anyway so good for you for taking them off. I personally will send anything any regulars want but i draw the line at the literally dozens of leeching fuckers who have e-mailed me in recent weeks asking for stuff, so if you are all reading this, piss off, i only share with regulars here, true hard core fans. :smoking:

Just voicing my thoughts too - like the Webmasters speculate , one reason why this site is starting to get so slow that often pages don't change or, like what happens with me, and THIS IS NOT DELIBERATE!, the same message or blank space gets posted three or four times in succession, is that I've noticed many regulars posting lots of images and hyperlinks on the pages....could this have a lot to do with the system slowing up then because it's the most plausible explanation?? Perhaps we can lighten the load by removing these unneccessary images as they often take time to download and thus delay one's getting the page open, don't you reckon? Tell me if I'm wrong, and I'll kindly get stuffed and crawl back into the Nick Cave.

Like, once you've spent ages typing out a big reply, it's infuriating to find that it doesn't return to the main page, so you then wonder what happens next - you're kept hanging on. I quite often get the "page missing" / "page not found" / "site is busy" /other error messages just a few seconds after pressing "Submit Reply", so I think it HAS got a lot to do with the sheer size of how this site has grown in the past few weeks.

See..I knew it would happen...I didn't get too many of the concerts downloaded...I hate you filthy bastards that caused this...may you all rot in hell...or better yet...be forced to listen to the new Britney cd over and over for all of eternity!!!

Yep, I also did not download much.....

... only today I tried to download some special versions.

To be honest: I would really regret if the diehard New Order fans would not be able anymore to download these special files that are made available on this site!

Fok, now I will miss a part of the fun..... .... nevertheless, if it is necessary to keep the site working in an acceptable we, well, then we will all have to accept it!

Seb, I wish you good luck in finding a good solution... thanks anyhow

You know what pissed me the most, MuffMan? It's when I saw several CD-R's for sale on E-Bay, each of them featuring live recordings of New Order's most recent concerts... and chances are that the content came from THIS site.

That pissed me off real bad.

This is totally against anything we ever wanted... so, once again, the honest people who form the majority have to pay for the acts of a few morons.

But then again, by taking off these files, it will be a real relief to surf on the site from now on. :)

Naaan, nothing to do with that. :)

But if you have a dial-up modem connection, then I believe the images on the site must take some time to load, yeah... but for everyone who has a DSL or cable or network connection, everything usually works like a charm for this aspect of things.

The irony in this is that, even if you'd wanted to download, you couldn't do it because the site was literally paralyzed by other people's downloads since the bandwidth has been restricted yesterday.

So, out of two worlds, we chose the best I think. *SIGH*

I think you did the right thing, Seb&Nic, when you took the files off the server. Everything seems to run smoother now (although I still get those "page cannot be found" messages when replying to messages...

You know Sebsy...I saw that going on as well...and wondered...but of course, still believing in the goodness of humanity, decided that it could not be so.... You reckon that once word gets round that the Mp3s are no longer available, that maybe, just maybe the number of hits on the site will begin to diminish???

... I hope not I've got a few boxes left to shift on e-Bay.

Well, I for one am sorry to see the files gone. It made this site...special...to borrow a NO title. For (some) of us folks who have never seen them live (me), or, have rarely heard them live on any format (me again),it was nice to hear your favorite band other than in the studio. As usual, a few rotten apples ruined (it) in a day.

Seb and Nic, your efforts and much appreciated by me.

Maybe there is something that could be worked out. I remember in the early days of the site that we would receive an e-mail with a specific place to go to get whatever new was available. Maybe this could be a compromise possibility.

With regret(s)

Jim

I'm really upset that the mp3 files are not available anymore. I like the site a lot and the one of best features was the mp3 files from concerts. As I said before, regular live material from New Order is almost nothing. I was really impressed with your mp3 files and wondered how you got them.

It's said but it's not the end. Your site is very nice and I wish you find a way that hardcore fans can keep getting the files. Of course I don't expect you spend U$ 300.00/month to do that.

Seb,

I just wondered if it would be possible to you to allow the download only one concert per week. Would it solve the bandwith problem?

I know the Radiohead site "At Ease" experienced similar problems, with people greedy to access MP3 files and stealing bandwidth. I think it would be interesting to canvass people's opinions on MP3 files, particularly of live recordings.

The only warning/error messages I've experienced in the last couple of days, though, have been MySQL timeouts on long threads on here.

Actually I might have some ideas I can try.

  1. Make the mp3s available only at night.. this would ease the bandwidth a little, having them available here from 0:00 to 6:00 EST (+5 in GMT) so in the morning in Europe, but still, the lucky ones would be the Asians :)

One thing for sure, I won't let the files be on the hard drive accessible via the web, I don't want other websites linking our files.. I didn't check, but I assume some might have been doing it. I recently developped a technique for doing this, this would help more than probably.

  1. Make a "daily limit" of download per user.. problem with that is we will get multiple accounts from the same people...

  2. Have >one< "concert of the month", and switch from month to month..

  3. Put back all those in real audio format.

I'm mostly thinking of a better system which would mostly pissed people off.. limiting the amount of simultanious downloads on the website at the same moment :)

We'll find a way.. Sure thing, the site is going pretty well now, I hope nobody gets nasty errors due to the network timeouts.

Good plans all! I appreciate the efforts that you and Seb make in finding a solution that still gives us some possibilities to download some of the beautiful New Order stuff.

May you have much wisdom!
