How did Thieves Like Us sound on its first live outing San Fran June 25th 83?.Was it much the finished version or very early stages?.

Same tune, with an extended bit, but with somwehat random lyrics. I'll burn it to MP3 and advertise the link when I can find the tape !

does anybody know the story about how it was written?

Arthur Baker gets writing credit but the end result is a seperate recording. did they record something during the "Confusion" session and redo it later? it is a really cool song, some seem not to like it... maybe the intro is too long to me and Baker seemed to denouce it as not a very good dance track, and the synths seem to generic in the beginning... and the lyrics are goofy.... but it all works in the end, especially 20 years later (growing old sucks thou )

its a great track in retrospect, as well as the b-side....

Its not meant to be a dance track like Confusion of BM is it? i always think of TLU as the flip of the coin,like Run and Regret-its their other style. The instrumental is just as good,and i dont need to mention the quality of Lonesome Tonight. Add to that New Orders most JD sounding track (Murder),and we`ve got a great double header.

It was all arsed up. Should have been TLU/TLUinst and LT/Murder. Why they released them in such a weird way only AHW would know

Ok, I feel bad for not liking Lonesome Tonight seeing as everyone regards it as a classic. What about the track is so great? Maybe you can change my mind.

I especially like when Barney finally shuts up (even though the lyrics aren't bad) and the synths take over at the end. A great melodic song without being a bombastic dance track or a guitarathon. Frankly, if you don't like the sound of it (since the music is what's really important, right?), then nothing I can say will change your mind about it. I think it's one of their best.

And, by the way, I've never thought that Murder really sounded like Joy Division at all, except for the Atrocity Exhibition-esque drums. Again I have to bring up the odd paradox that Movement, the New Order album seemingly held in the lowest esteem (with the exception of Republic, depending on who you talk to), sounds the closest to the sound of the much-revered Joy Division. Sure, you could argue that they were transitioning from JD into their own sound, but that would imply that Ian was the only determining factor that made Joy Division. Now, did Ian really make Joy Division what it was, or should we just ignore that the majority of Joy Division's musicians (including those most responsible for the Joy Division musical sound) were still creating very Joy Division-esque music on Movement (and yet that music is somehow considered subpar in comparison)?

i still remember quite clearly 20 years ago now hearing Thieves Like Us the first time and the long intro was fuckin awesome.totally unique sound .Lonesome Tonight is a great track.

THIEVES LIKE US is as fragile as LOVE can be and that it was makes it such a BRILLIANT song.At any given moment it seems that it could all collapse and fall apart.To me this song represents the true BRILLIANCE of NEW ORDER. Everything about this track makes me remember just how great i thought they were back in the 1980's compared to all the other bands around.Trouble is my experience taught me that the songs out live the relationships! :D And as for the instrumental....COME IN........you bet and i never left.Ain't life great when you can enjoy MUSIC at it's best?But don't go telling your mates how good they are cos it will spoil the SPECIAL pleasure for you.Keep em to yourself.Like a packet of cheese and onion crisps NEVER SHARE! I agree Lonesome Tonight is an awesome song - and the best version has got to be 6-12-85 London Poly - "can you all move back a bit...or we'll be doing a suffocation benefit... next week ...and i'm sure you don't want us in London again"

yeah i always thought it was "studied the wrinkles" not "started the wrinkles".But then i thought for 20 years that Blue Monday went "i see a ship in the harbour / i can and shall obey" instead of "i see a ship in the harbour /anchored in a shallow bay" so what do i know
