good article. was reading a pentagram book just today, and there was saville. they seemed to put a lot of non pentragram saville stuff in there
lucian: hows the site coming along
It's an interesting article - I especially like the quote avout Factory never making a decision with profit in mind and that makes them better than BMW (I'm paraphrasing). He does come over slightly miffed about his treatment here and there. Has he really been made Artisitc Director of Manchester or was that an April Fool?
i like the hooky quote. there must be at least 10 of them, yet who turns up at the saville launch and writes the soundtrack? its why hooky is the best.
this may sound a little simplistic, but it seems that pentagram was too "mainstream" for saville. his qoute about "corporate casanovas" and "shagging brands to death" kind of leads me to that opinion. given the choice between a small time , quality fashion label , and re-tuning bmw's image, i think i gather the choice saville and pentagram would make.
There was a blurb about Saville's PCL cover in the latest Artforum magazine. Some artist was listing his top ten influences or something like that and Saville was at #1. My roommate showed it to me in a bookstore the other day, so I can't quite recall it specifically.
There's an interesting audio stream of Saville and and his schoolfriend Malcolm Garrett (assorted images) recorded last november at the In The City convention they talk candidly about everything from school to punk to post-modernism, though be warned without broadband I suspect it could be somewhat frustrating to listen too i.e. a little stop start. Anyway it's worth hearing, especially if you missed the recent Urbis talks:

Regarding the site Clockwork slow...very slow and yes it's true he's been made Creative Director for Manchester he finds it deliciously ironic that after graduating, every design agency in Manchester while acknowledging his portfolio was interesting, didn't think he was commercially viable, hence his forced excursion to London.![]()
