Hi everyone

Just thought I'd introduce myself...

I'm a long time fan of New Order and JD (stemming back to 1987) and have always loved everything they've released and even have the originial cassettes of Brotherhood, PC@Lies, and everything else from the 80's (although they don't play that well anymore...) :) wornout i suppose...

Anyhow, I wanted to comment of my obsession of peter Hook's bass playing and how of all the greatest bassists in music (Geddy Lee, Chris Squire) I feel that hooky is my all time favorite and I get consumed by his incredible bass riffs.

Just thought I'd ramble a but. Now I'm going to look at some posts...

Welcome Todd. Indeed Hooky's bass is so important: the first thing I've ever heard from him is that bass in the beginning of Twenty Four Hours. You can imagine I was instantly blown away and when I had a band years later I wanted to play bass with plectrum and chorus pedal too. Some could remember the first E Mail address I used back in 1997 on the Ceremony mailing list was the now abandoned italianhooky@yahoo.com :D

Mick--what is the secret behind hooky's bass playing? What kind does he use...the sound is so unique it sometimes doesn't sound like a bass but i know it is. Only in some videos can I get a glimpse of his playing style and such. The best one is the MTV Love will tear us Apart video but haven't seen much since.

Sometimes the bass is so mesmerizing; I believe his best work of late is the lastest CD (get ready??) I believe they went back to the roots a bit in their style...

*Well, I asked him if there was anything else other than playing high strings through a chorus pedal and he said that's it, there are no secrets... it's easy to reproduce, actually I could make a rather similar sound with my bass... it's just he has a great melodic sensitivity and he more invented it than reproduced it... I think The Cure started using the chorus pedal before him, but he definitely defined the thing. Of course playing bass with plectrum has always been around on the punkier side of rock'n'roll and he was influenced by that... I've always liked how he told that he got there almost by accident... apparently he couldn't hear himself on the cheap amp, so he started playing high notes because they could be heard better than the lower ones, which went kinda lost into the noise of the band... then he must have thought the chorus sound was good and also Bernard is a really strong guitarist who could drive Ian's voice on his own so he was more allowed to experiment with melody rather than just playing rhythm base like the most bassists do... when Bernard's guitar wass less prominent he actually mantained the chord structure, just playing around it, like ornating a base with melody...

You don´t know my Avatar? This Man was Keith Moon ,the legendary drummer from The Who,my second big love beside Joy Division/New Order.He died in 1978.He was famous and notorious about to destroy his drums, Hotelrooms and kick the TV out of the windwow. Great! I think I should have recognised Mr. Moon. I have never been much into the Who I am afraid.

*You're welcome Todd, obviously I should have added how everything became easier when New Order started using programmed rhythm bass (like in Paradise, True Faith etc.) and it was like having two basses, one automatic for the base and Hooky for the melody, free to act as a lead guitar... that's what makes him truly unique...
