NO/JD Books

Bear with me as I'm sure this topic has been exhuasted before.

What New Order / Joy Division books out there would you recommend? TFAD is the obvious one, although I can't seem to find that in any of the bookshops round here.

Mick Middles From Joy Division to New Order is good.

Yes, Mick Middles' book is good, though I'd say it's more of a Factory Records story than an outright JD/NO biography.

I have 'Dreams Never End' by Claude Flowers, it's a bit simple in places but a good read nonetheless

Is Brian Edge's "Pleasures and Wayward Distractions" still in print? (It only goes up to 1988, mind....)

Reckon there's still a market for a definitive book on the band ? We ought to write one !

No, that's absolutely true: there's a good 15 years missng from in-print monographs on the group. You'd need the band to co-operate (interviews and stuff), and given that their memories are clearly shot to fucking pieces I think you'd also need plenty of help from the 'ardcore who can fill in with anecdotes from gigs, etc. New Order still have a devoted fanbase so I don't think getting a publising deal would be too tricky, but it's a mammoth project when you start thinking about it.....

ive only managed to get the mick middles and debroah curtis books. both are lacking a little. as for 24hpp book, well, shite would be a fitting description.

im reading "englands dreaming" by jon savage. i wish he would do the book.

have your local library order it from interlibrary loan for you. my dad's a librarian and got it for me from the closest place he could find around here---the broward county department of corrections!

I've got Touching From A Distance by Deborah Curtis. Its a very good book for New Order and Joy Division fans as you can get a very good feel for the history of the band.

The only thing I don't like is Debbie's over use of explanation marks! It kind of gets a bit much after a while! do you know what a mean! sor'ted man its buzzin'!

you should also look out for in cuttings - not strictly speaking a book, but great to dip into

Touching From A Distance is back in print. HMV are currently selling it in paperback form for a mere £3.99

I gotta go with the three I've been able to lay my hands on: TFAD, Ideal, and From JD to NO. Other than that, the JD/NO literary well has run dry in my parts

I've mentioned it in another post but I think that the new book 33 1/3 Unknown Pleasures is the best look at the actual music and lyrics as well as all the rest which we already know. Sadly it only really builds up to Unknown Pleasures and then mentions Closer almost as a post-script - but I guess that's what the book intended to do. I especially like the comparison between versions and the history of a song leading up to its final incarnation. Some good stuff on Hannett in there too. Definitely worth the meager sum being asked for it.

Can't wait to get my hands on that 33 1/3 book....been looking around for this tiny book but I think it has yet to reach Sydney. Funny thing is the 33 1/3 book on THE SMITHS 'MEAT IS MURDER' has almost nothing at all on the music or the recording sessions, instead it's just a typical suburbia tale ( ala Belle & Sebastian's storytelling lyrics )....how disappointing.:(
