Revenge / Monaco - CRAP?

Who else thinks "Republic" was even more of a lite rip-off of New Order than Hooky's bit on the side???
Revenge and Electronic consist of the songs that New Order would have made (or at least the ideas they would have brought to the table) had they not gone their separate ways after Technique.
Monaco and later Electronic are the same stuff as would have happened had they not gone their separate ways after Republic.
Republic is a result of them having been their separate ways for so long (and still were...).

I think Electronic's 'Electronic' was infinitely better than Republic. Always have done. I think a poll here proved the same as well. It was the album New Order should have done. Not convinced about TO2 or Revenge just cos they didn't really sound like New order records to these ears. Just a different product entirely.
I think the second Monaco album is pretty dark, not surprising really, Hooky had lost two close people . However for me the track 'A life apart ' is one of the most beautiful slices of music Hooky has been involved with , even if I cant quite place the influence of the Choir type vocals . I wasn't expectin New Order , and as such I just liked it on it's own, like Music for Pleasure too . Still play them both too
Believe it or not I quite liked Revenge... some shit tracks but on the whole not THAT bad really
As for Monaco I thought they were too poppy... and I've never listened to the 2nd album all the way through. The first album was ok though
i caught monaco live at derby warehouse on the night england got hoofed out of italia 90. i remember hookster wearing an england top..i am sure it must have been a freebie from the wim shoot
I like them. Not New Order by any means but still streets ahead of most of the shit out there.
What do you want from me could easily have been an NO song.
really enjoy listening to happy jack on the music for pleasure album, just purely for the fantastic hooky bass!!!!!!!
best track on the album by far!!
regards

Revenge made some great tracks equal to New Order, The Trouble With Girls,7 Reasons & Slave would of been worthy of being New Order. Monaco`s What Do You Want From Me? is also probably the closet NO sounding track any of them have done away from the band.
I liked some of revenge a lot. But then what do you expect with just one guy with any track record in the band.
I liked the first monaco album but the second one, although slickly produced, is totally forgettable. I can't name any song, tune or lyric from the second album. production over songwriting which made it sound like any old top 40 band.
I think the first Monaco album is GREAT. I've listened to it for the first time in quite a while recently, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
I'm still a bit frustrated at the fact that New Order, as a band, has lost all this creativity generated in the 1990 - 1997 period. Electronic with Hooky would have been much better and Monaco with Barney would have been much better as well. The same can of course be said about The Other Two.
The idea of watching New Order perform selected tracks from their side projects have been floating around these parts for a few years, and I still think it might be a good idea, to a certain extent.

Yeah, right. David Potts was just Barney in disguise. Have you ever seen them in the same room together?
Most spin-off bands are crap, or inconsistent to say the least. Esp. Revenge, who were bloody awful, quite frankly. Electronic's first two albums were fantastic, & Monaco weren't half bad, but that's mainly thanks to Barn... er, Pottsy. ![]()
I think the Other Two are the most under-rated satellite actually, they released two pretty good albums & showcased Gillian as a ruddy good singer. Out of all the singles Other Two, Electronic, Monaco, Revenge etc released, Tasty Fish' & 'Selfish' are definitely in my Top 5

i preferred them when they were called bananarama.

What?
Revenge just weren't very good full stop, and this is understandable really. Basically Hooky formed it soley to play live, he's not a natural singer, and the majority of the band had very little talent! I can count the number of Revenge songs I would consider on par with New Order on one hand: Pinapple Face (Factory Album Version), Trouble With Girls/Big Bang, State of Shock, and the original Deadbeat. Actually most of Gun World Porn was good, if slightly cliched, humourless rock'n'roll. It's Quiet as a leadout track from the debut LP had a certain charm to it also.
Monaco on the other hand was an entirely different beast, Hooky was actively sharing 50% of the writing duties with someone else while proclaiming "Revenge is dead" which was music in itself to alot of New Order fan's ears. As we saw good old Pottsy didn't steer the old guy wrong ;)
The whole of Music for pleasure is a joy to listen to, a real "summer" album. Wdywfm? is on par with the best of New Order's material, with Junk and Shine not far behind. Sweet lips is a bit cheesy but great if you're in that housey sort of mood. The spaghetti western influences on Sedona are really beautifully done, and make Elegia sound dull by comparison. Happy Jack contains one of Hooky's best basslines ever, and Blue blows the totally average Run Wild out of the water.
Basically Monaco's M4P was the sound of Hooky really enjoying himself, and making some brilliant, truly memorable pop music in the process. I could go on about that album endlessly because it's truthfully one of my favourite albums ever, above alot of New Order's stuff. Fair enough, the second LP was quite a patchy affair but I do think this was mainly because of it's recording circumstances (New Order reforming, Hooky winding down Monaco) but there are still some tunes on there that would blow Revenge out of the water.
I cannot stand New Order fans who moan "Oh it's New Order lite", they absolutely do my tits in. What are you jealous?? One of the musicians from your beloved band is indulging in something other than New Order? It's absolutely pathetic.
If the side-projects hadn't happened New Order would've split for good, they all needed seperate outlets otherwise NO would have imploded in a very bad split, no question.
Of course Monaco/Electronic/O2 are going to sound like New Order in places! They have respective members of New Order in them! Plus Pottsy deserves alot of credit because I think he had more of a hand in Monaco's best songs (like Wdywfm?) than Hooky himself.
So to recap :D Revenge = Pants, Monaco = Great... case closed!
(Christ knows what Freebass is going to be like, however good they are, if they release a song to top Wdywfm? and most of M4P i will be *seriously* surprised)
Cheers ![]()
Ally.
ALLY ...welcome and i think you make some great points here.I think that if it was not for MONACO keeping HOOKY in the limelight then by the time NEW ORDER surfaced again they could have lost even more fans along the way.I especilly like their second album but on the whole each spinoff group had it's moments.Again although i did not like too much of REVENGE's output they certainly kept my enthusiasm for the HOOKY/SUMNER/MORRIS/GILBERT dream alive.I never expected to hear a NEW ORDER MARK TWO from any of the other bands and so i was never too bothered or critical of their output. As fans i think sometimes we expect TOO MUCH of our MUSIC HEREOS.But they are still around and making music and i guess that is the only thing that matters.Must dash cos i have to complain on another site that i don't like singers over 40 with lots of HAIR! :D
Yours sincerely ROCKET MICK ![]()
