Joy, "Substance" Question

On the "Substance 1977-1980" Cd, between songs 10 and 11 it says "appendix". Does anyone know why? Also, just a comment maybe, but songs 11 and twelve do not sound like the usual Ian. Different time period maybe? The j card provides zero info.

"appendix" is just another word for b-sides. Songs 10 and 11 are from Joy Division's first release "An Ideal For Living" e.p. As are tracks 1 and 2, Ian hadn't found his true voice at this time (1977). Hope that answers your questions.

Those tracks are in addition to those featured on the vinyl version.

Hi - the best way to explain this is that tracks 1-10 are the "a-sides" of the singles/ep JD released, and 11 - 17 are the corresponding b-sides. Sort of. Technically, "an ideal for living" was an ep, so tracks 1,2,11 and 12 make up this release. The remaining tracks almost run as a-sides with corresponding b-sides after the appendix ('Autosuggestion' goes with 'From safety to where', ditto 'Transmission' and 'Novelty'), however, they decided to mess this idea up by listing 'She's lost control' in the "non-appendix", although it was the b-side to 'Atmosphere'. I'm sure I could've said it more clearly, but I am drunk and tired. CTB

You are right, as usual, Mr. Williams.

I bought the vinyl when it came out in '88 and only four years later I got my first CD-player. The first CD I bought was this one. I can still remember the excitement the first time I heard some of those (for me back then) unknown tracks.

It was actually the other way round for me, which is weird cause I go for the vinyl first, and it was one of the first ten CD's I ever bought. Must've been the extra tracks that swayed me at the time, and then I never saw a vinyl copy for a long time, until last year when Biznotic himself helped steer me in the right direction in Seattle.
