I have had a memory block.

A couple of questions regarding this ill fated festival.

What year was it when the order were due to play ?? Who else was on the card..(Prodigy??) Why was it cancelled??

New Order were supposed to play 18th July 1998, two days after the Manchester 'warm-up'.

Cancelled due to poor ticket sales, apparently.

Think Ocean Colour Scene were another headliner??

OCS were also supposed to be involved cos me mate Mark wanted to go, I am sure John had reserved tickets for all of us. There was talk of the Prodigy as well, but this was just before it fell from the sky. Still, we got a cracking craic at Reading instead :beer:

I do recall that Vince Power said in the aftermath of the collapse that the only day of the four-day weekend to be selling well was the NO headline date (hence their transfer to the Reading line-up).

Anyone ever get to Phoenix? Decent enought festival, but the site left something to be desired: a disused airstrip in the arse end of nowhere, Shakespeare-land. It really did feel like a refugee camp at times....

I flew out from Oz for this ill-fated festival (well, amongst other things) and was mighty relieved when they agreed to do Reading.

pheonix was indeed cancelled due to poor ticket sales. i had a ticket and was waiting in anticipation to see the order for the first time.......... however..........the organisers seemed to forget about a certain little event like the WORLD CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no wonder it was cancelled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :nuts:

Eh watch it I was brought up 5 miles from where Phoenix was held. ;) I could almost jump over a few hedges and fields to get there. Felt sorry for my Nan, she could hear it from her back garden!

I remember Inspiral Carpets (MoooO!) and Stereolab playing there in 94/95ish...very good. Tim Gane of Stereolab signed a photo print for me and fell off his chair backwards staring at my NO T-shirt with that eye and wings on it....sooooo funny! Said he liked the t-shirt and NO though! :D Also Sex Pistols for first and last time.

Shame it folded because it was a good natured festival, without the crime gangs you often get at Reading.

Went to Phoenix a couple of times.95 and 96.Can`t really remember who we saw..Minty (with the bird who would sing naked with a see thru mac).Massive Attack.My abiding memory though is from 96 a very very angry red faced Steve McFadden (Phil in Eastenders) having a massive row with his missus or someone and storming off the dodgems.
