Erm...this is the sort of stupid question that I'd kick anyone else for asking...but is Peter Saville any relation to the artist Jenny Saville?

I suppose that makes as much sense as wondering if Sting and Barney are related because they have the same last name and are both singers. :nonono:

If he was, I don't know if he'd care to admit it!!!

Lol...no he's the youngest of three sons, his father was successful in the sanitary ware business. Quite by coincidence, Saville's brother Michael - who went into the family business - supplied the stainless steel sanitary ware for the Hacienda.

"It actually had Saville stainless' on the washbasins and urinals, and people must have thought, My God, Peter Saville has even designed the wash- basins!"...I know I did, see: http://www.savillestainless.com/index.html

or if you want to savour the WC's in the flesh, Central Library in Manchester hosts a selection.

David,

Not a stupid question at all.

A less well known Saville family connection had a far bigger impact on introducing a young Peter to the music industry. It was his father's cousin, Jimmy, a pioneering UK DJ that opened doors for the aspiring graphic designer. Peter Saville confirmed as much in an interview while promoting the London expo of his life's work, 'it's true, Jimmy fixed it for me'.

Rather unfairly, Peter's father and brother have been accused of making a living by taking the piss!.

Hope that helps.

LEGEND. I cant believe he is related to Jimmy.

My mate was reading a book on superstar DJs, and it saidd that contempoary "mixing" was invented by Jimmy saville In a yorkshire workmens club. I used to love "Jimll fix it" as a kid (im 21) . Did peter design the Medals ? :evil4:

Lucian, ive been trying to get a hold of the "INTERNATIONAL new order" font - the one that looks like edgy handwriting - do you know what its called? or where I can get it? Hows the site coming along? I love the Pirelli section on showstudio - you should definetly try to nab that when the years out. Best use of Shock ive sen in a while.

Conor, do you mean the prepartory design as seen in his monograph. If so I think it was hand drawn, the closest I've got is this: Not sure if it's suitable for your needs, but if you want it, I'll send you a copy.

Yeah good stuff as regards Pirelli...difficult producing a 'glamour calender' in this age without being accused of sexism or looking like a 'Loaded' pull out section, hence using the female perspective.

:( Its a pity. Jimmy and Peter went so well together.

Lucian- Could you Email me that or the one used on the cd of the actual album please? conor@ziplip.com id really like to have/use it.

I think Pirelli is among Saville/Knights finest work so far, and I just love that international type! Hope he keeps up the new material. Did you see that new saville site? it says nothing but has pretty much all his music covers on it - a good archive .

I read the above as Jimmy Saville, not Jenny Saville. I must have the former inprinted in my brain or something. I remember I was gutted because my letter to Jim'll fix it wasn't answered when I was a little kid and I only found out years later that my man never actually posted it!!

Anyone remember Savilles Travels, or was that just a North East thing? My Nanna used to listen to that loads
