Yup, this is serious... it's been published in the Rolling Stone, somebody sent me a scan of the article.

New Order were "recruited" for a song on Gwen Stefani's upcoming solo album... they are not the only ones, Dr. Dre and Martin L. Gore have also been picked.

Apparently, she said she received hundreds of songs.. I wonder if New Order actually submitted stuff, or if she asked them.

Gwen Stefani is stepping out of the shadow of No Doubt, but don't call her new album a solo record. "The whole idea was to collaborate", says Stefani. "To do a solo record means trying to pour my heart out, which I feel like I already do in No Doubt. This is more of an art project. I wanted to play different roles and work with a ton of people". The lineup she recruited is as all-star as they come: Dallas Austin looks to his past work with Pink and TLC for a dance feel, Dr. Dre and The Neptunes bring the hip-hop beats, and Martin Gore, Dave Stewart and New Order provide New Wave authenticity.

"I knew exactly what my influences were - Club Nouveau, Lisa Lisa, Prince, New Order, The Cure, early Madonna", says Stefani, "Everybody was under strict instructions".

Hot Tracks

On "Bubble Pop Electric", OutKast's André 3000 lends a Broadway-musical vibe, and Stefani comes on like a cross between the Andrews Sisters and underground electro diva Peaches. "I'm such a fan of André's", she says, "I was sent hundreds of tracks, and his were the first I actually liked. It was interesting to work with him while his star was really shining bright. At first, it was kind of intimidating, like, I didn't feel I could shine. But by the end, it felt like we were in a band together".

If New Order is involved in producing the album, then that's just fine with me, but it would be ridiculous to watch Hooky strum a bass in a Gwen Stefani video; I don't really believe that the boys would think of helping to produce for her, but if Steve could buy another tank with the money that would be made from strictly producing and from the publicity the band would get from being involved with her, then there's a chance they would do it. The band will never be the same as it was in the eighties, so as long as they make decent music, then they could take on whatever projects they can, as long as it doesn't delay the upcoming album.

Hey hey, we so what, as long as the Order make some coin from such a collaboration. If the Order start to get some publicity stateside, then maybe they will be urged to release their album faster, and maybe this time it will be properly marketed (i.e. the more popular the album is, the more chances there are for a proper tour). In all likelihood, the band would get no exposure here from such a venture, and the album won't be marketed properly, and us Yanks would be lucky to get a couple of tour dates.

yeah, i hear you; but i see images of concerts full of "tweens" thrusting themselves at the stage all amped up for their new favorite band. if NO collaborated with...catpower's chan marshall, for example, that would be something to behold.

I'm happy anytime I get new material written by NO...hopefully its more than just production...

It wasn't so long ago that many of us thought we'd never get new material from them...

Is this a first ? I can't think of any songs new order have "made to order" or actually written for someone else?

If she releases it before their new album comes out in the states, it could help shift a shitload of albums over there.

Its an interesting course for new order to take. Im sure there will be a load of fans here who will see it as "unpure", but I can't see how anything in the world could be worse than "Rock The Shack".

I am guessing New Order have been hired to write some of music and the stuff they do will be very much background stuff.

It is funny how New Order seem to very cool at the moment, quite remarkable for a band in existance since 1980.

However when you listen to Substance or Technique its so easy to see why. Trace fans like New Order, Smith's fans like New Order. I have also noticed how all these famous artists seem to quite Joy Divsion as a major influence.

It's very easy to see why... listen to tracks like Vanishing Point, a definite early trance thing going on there I reckon :nod: Many trance artists name New Order (and Depeche Mode!) as an influence too.

Think we may be reading too much into this,we`re hardly likely to see them on TOTP or CD:UK with her are we? One of them may just float around on a track like Gillespie did on RTS.

Also I was watching the VMA's (for what reason, I have no clue), but Gwen said she has 25 songs already done, and she's whittling them down to put on the album. Maybe the boys already have worked for her. :scratch:

it's entirely possible - just the whole thing has a "mcdonald-izing" vibe to it. no doubt is a huge intl pop franchise. NO is a gorgeous brilliant entity that, although, all the fellas are well off - , has somehow succeeded almost below the radar; and as such, has managed to not be overexploited. so cheers! what will be, will be.
