yeah... i wonder about that too. Barney almost NEVER sings that part, he always sings the "Avenues all lined with trees" part twice in the song.
he's just got a bad memory that's all... or maybe he didn't really know it's there. he probably doesn't listen to the original release recordings much.
They've played it live 200+ times, and I'll wager that he's remembered the correct words more times than not.

I think the verse in question has a strong connection to Ian, and they prefer to leave it out. They wear the emotion on their sleeves every time they perform a JD song. Throw on the 511 DVD and have a look.

That's the story, although they would have heard them at the demo recording and at the last JD gig, but they were probably more concerned with their own instruments instead of listening to Ian singing.
