A couple that come to mind:

Heart and Soul. (Because it has just about every Joy Division song released, and that's the main reason why we like these guys so much, and because we are here, their music.)

Original Here are the Young Men VHS video. (I mention this for two reasons; because it is a nice collector's item, but even more importantly, from this tape I got to see the greatest band of all-time live, and experience their pure genius on stage.)

Touching from a Distance biography book. (This book changed my life in many ways. It let me get a small look into who this tortured genius was. I got to see some of the good and some of the ugly sides of this incredibly talented person from the perspective of his wife. And although it is a very depressing book, it is also inspiring to me. The book also includes some of my favorite photos of Ian, and all of his masterful lyrics.

Not proud of any of it to be honest. It's all available to everyone, nothing particularly collectable. Records and memorabilia don't do anything for me. All I need are the memories of various gigs, the feeling of anticpation when that blue light came on a minute before they walked on stage, the buzz of the first few bars of the first song (unless it was bloody Elegia). That's all I'm proud of, having had the chance to see them perform so many times.

I have nothing of interest, although I do have an original 1980 copy of LWTUA on 12" which is on A1 condition. I have seen these fetch £20 on ebay.

I like my Substance LP again thats is in A1 condition but they are probably a good million of them floating around.

I also have a 1979 copy of Unkown Pleasures although it is the first pressing as it dosn't go brown in the light. Its a pitty at first pressings can fetch £60+ on ebay.

I am quite proud of my BLT 12" single although it isn't that rare it raises a few eye brows because it has no writing on the sleeve.

I don't *collect*, but I have a few intersting bits and pieces. e.g. a signed Ideal for Living, a 24HPP premier goodie bag, the Sordide Sentimentale JD single with a note from AHW inside. I guess most collectors would want these. The items I'm most fond of regardless of value are the copy of Unknown Pleasures that I bought back in 1979, The Palatine Box, EGG FBN8 12" bought on day of release and my blue vinyl copy of Live At The Electric circus.

I was quite pleased when Hooky pinched my nose for being nosey at his record collection when he was DJ'ing at South. At the Rob Gretton night I only managed to speak to Stephen Morris as he was in the audience, that was quite good too.

Uncleliam managed to get Stephen to sign his T-SHIRT though. Its not fair!;)

Care to explain a little bit more what the "Republic promo boxset" is? AFAIK, the only promo boxset for an album is the Best Of box.

Also, one of my gems would be the JP LP 1981-1985 promo. I got that one in a trade for the JP LD of Substance. I found the LD in a recordstore in St Petersburg, FL, for only 20 USD.

No....i think i was offered a copy when it first appeared for aprox £70 which was £40 above what i would pay for ANY artefact at that time.Most of my collection was CHEAP AS CHIPS .Just happened to have some good DEALERS.My main collecting was done for the LOVELY 12 inch ARTWORK covers.But i can see why this is an OBJECT OF DESIRE,but i think i would have wanted a CLONE OF GILLIAN at that time.Mind you BLOW UP DOLLS were well collected in CORBY back then!

I was only three when ‘Blue Monday’ was released. So I was very delighted to be able to pick up a US Import copy of the Qwest 12” single re-release a few weeks ago here in the UK.

My favourite New Order track is the 1983 ‘Confused Instrumental’ b-side. When the song was remixed and re-released in 1993 I was only 13, and I certainly didn’t know of anyone who bought 12” singles of a similar age then (not being mature enough to save up and buy a copy is a regret of mine).

My first impressions of the 808State acid mixes weren’t that great, but I sincerely hope that both the band and those who have worked with them will encourage similar projects to this.

substance gatefold definitely the nicest. brotherhood cd (the original that came in the car carry case with the metallic sleeve - though dont have the case is also nice as i didnt realise it was the original when i picked it up & only bought it for the press technique sticker it was being sold with)

I have a good quality rip of the BM 7", but I doubt it's authenticity. I think someone took me at my word when I jokingly suggested on here some time back that you could easily do your own homemade "Japanese edit" with nothing more than the original CD and knowledge of where to start the fade out...

I frigged about with Temptation from the Something Wild vinyl soundtrack and the volume came thru very low. Played around with Nero and was able to tidy it up a bit. So after my first try I ended up with a .WAV file. How do I convert to MP3? Once I suss it out I can record my Japanese Blue Monday 7" b/w Confusion for you.

If you pan to more vinyl-to-mp3 work, you may want to invset in a preamplifier to connect between turntable and PC... You don't want to record with a low level and then boost it in a program. The problem with that is that while you are boosting the music you are also boosting the noise...

Using a program like SoundForge or CoolEdit (not sure about any free programs, I think CoolEdit is shareware) you should be able to increase the input level somewhat during the recording process (since it's digital recording you never want to exceed 0dB -> distortion). The above programs also have filter capabilities to reduce noise, snap, crackle 'n' pops, etc.

If you manage to get a well recorded WAV and upload that to somewhere... I'm sure that someone here can process it for best soundquality.

As for making it to mp3, you can save a WAV file to mp3 in the above programs. Personally I always use CDex (free), the Lame (mp3) encoder is part of that package.

You may want to consider purchasing the Something Wild OST on compact disc. It's just a fade of the 7 inch version and not worth the effort you're going through to digitize it.

No, that is incorrect. The SW version is not the same as the 7" version. I did a side-by-side comparison a while back (search this forum or the Ceremony archives) and found that one of them (can't recall which) has lyrics/chorus over portions where the other just have guitar-play. Especially the last minute, minute and a half or so differs quite a bit (in an edit-kind of way).

A premap would be pretty good. You can get a phono premap but if you look on the second hand market you can get some really good bargains. I paid £15 for a late 1980's Rotel 870BX, these things cost £200 in 1989 and they are well made and sound great. The phono stage is very high end and you can use the rest of the inputs to switch between other sources.

I am not sure the exact electronics of it but a phono preamp does more than amplify the sound to line level it also moderates the sound. If you don't use a preamp then the output from the turntable will be too high frequency so some kind modulation is required to recreate the sound to a more natural level.

If you're using cheap equipment then you won't notice it but if you have a decent HIFI then you do want to be using a premap before converting vinyl to MP3.

You can probably get some software to do this modulation but it won't do as good job as a proper hardware pre amp would.

OK, so I went and bought an RCA connector for my turntable to my PC and managed to get it working. I frigged about with Temptation from the Something Wild vinyl soundtrack and the volume came thru very low. Played around with Nero and was able to tidy it up a bit. So after my first try I ended up with a .WAV file. How do I convert to MP3? Once I suss it out I can record my Japanese Blue Monday 7" b/w Confusion for you.

You may want to consider purchasing the Something Wild OST on compact disc. It's just a fade of the 7 inch version and not worth the effort you're going through to digitize it.

I was only using the Something Wild Temptation cause it was the first vinyl I pulled out of the collection - didn't want to use my BM 7" as a test in case I damaged it by accident. My turntable has a built in pre-amp so I boosted the volume in Nero without any degradation (it seems). When I get round to it I will just record BM 7" + Confusion to a WAV file and send it to Spotnick. One of you guys can sort out an MP3 version of it.
