what if...?

We've done countless threads about what if Ian Curtis had lived and the band had gone on...but there's a shortage of threads debating what would've happened to the remaining band members after Ian's death if they decided not to go on as New Order.

So what then? Dayjobs? Strange nighttime appearances? Bizarre addictions to foodstuffs?

Argue.

I reckon Barney would have gone back to being an artist.....

...a piss artist, that is.

They'd occasionally be dragged out for "I love 197x" shows. But JD wouldn't be remembered as well as they are now - a lot of people forget that NO aren't known at all by most people except for Blue Monday, and a lot of people know JD as "That band that became New Order and did Blue Monday".

Hooky would be a DJ, Steve would probably be a teacher (dunno why, he looks like one), Gillian I don't know and Barney would probably have died of a drug overdose from the cash from Factories nth repressing of the JD albums in say, 1988

What If?

Good question Popey.

Imagine they got a straight replacement for Ian. Some lanky deep voiced front man. Could've ruined any cultural capital in a matter of moments.

You don't mean Paul Young do you, for christ's sake.

The band members themselves used to joke in interviews that, during the photosession shot in the snow-covered streets of Manchester in early 1979, Steve looked like a geography teacher (on account of the jacket that he was wearing, with the elbow protectors sown on the sleeves).

Bernard already had a career (albeit in fledgling phase) as a graphic illustrator. I suspect that what they had learned about the music business would have meant that they would have stayed involved in some way.

Yeah, JD-era Steve bears a striking resemblance to an Australian professor I had for a symbolic logic class a few years back. But that's old news.

Steve would be a software billionare like Bill Gates. Hookey would be a football hooligan. Gillian would be what she is now. Barney would have found religion after serving his upteenth sentence for drug related offences.
