Doe anybody know who does the backing vocals on this track? "My life is a holiday...." it sounds a bit like it may be Hooky is this correct?
Also when I listen to the album (Technique) I can't quite believe it was out in 1989 in the Stock Aikten Waterman era of Kylie and Jason Donovan.
Was this album as cutting edge as it is made out for 1989? Tracks like Round and Round sound fresh and modern even today, it reminds me of the stuff the pop/dance bands such as Darude were doing 10 years later.
Dont know about the backing vocals on Vanishing Point,it was probably just Barneys voice layered,but Technique is probably the best example of NewOrder picking the wrong songs for singles.
I think Fine Time is a bit naff compared to a lot of tracks on that album. I do like Round and Round a lot though, but the single version (at least in 7" form) sounds like a pop song and it isn't the same cutting edge track on the album.
Maybe the 12" is the same as the album version.
The 12" is actually quite good,somewhere inbtween the album and the 7"mix. The remixes though are complete shite.
Classic song and i love the vocals that seem to go a bit DEEPER towards the end. WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND...............great film aswell!

Vanishing Point would have been huge for the Technique singles. Mr Disco and Dream Attack would have been good choices somewhere along the line because they're catchy and they stand out. Most people can't follow the lyrics in Fine Time anyway. Fine Time only would have been a good single if it was like the third or fourth single just to express the diversity of the album.
Vanishing Point has some of the best lyrics in a New Order song. It's a very beautiful and touching song.

"Fine Time" is single material,but they should`ve left it off the album. If it had been a one-off single it might still be better thought of...

i couldn't disagree more. i think it's the weakest track on the album; it's a mess and barney sounds like he ate too many baked beans.

I dunno, those are the two songs I always forget about on Technique. They're not bad but I just think there's others (posted earlier) that are more sellable and better suited for single status (remixes, mass crowd pleasers, etc )
I think Fine Time's the standout single on the album, just cos it's so diverse. Probably arrived 3-4 months too late though to give it proper musical credibility. D-Mob's Acieeed had already gone to no.1 in the October (I think?) and New Order would've probably fared better if they'd just delivered it before the cheesy acid tracks started pouring out (not that I think D-Mob's cheesy, but you get my drift - it's a bit 'crossover').
That keyboard bit in Vanishing point at 52 seconds blows my head off every time I hear it. My favourite song ever.
Technique is easily NewOrder/Joy Divisions best album -in my opinion the best album ever, but musos tend to edge out of the conversation after I say that, to piss on about some tripe music and 3rd rate poetry, like the Doors or Syd or something equally shit.
Also: isn’t the lyric "my life aint no holiday, I've been through the point of no return", about ecstasy I thought.

Didn't Li'l Louis go to No.1 that year as well??? Did briefly feel like the world was turning off its axis.
If Phuture had gone Top 10, it probably would've done....

Thats what the rest of the song seems to be about, and in the film Vanishing Point the lead character is on Benzedrene.
Then again, its not a major difference. Both are metamphetemines.
Album was a masterpiece, is a masterpiece. Even Fine Time isn't technically really bad (I love the version on the Reading '93 bootleg) but it suffers badly in comparison to the rest of the album. Interesting conundrum in regards to the singles. Over here in the states local radio played "Dream Attack" and "Round and Round" and ignnored "Fine Time". As for what would have been the best single(s). I probably would have released either "Dream Attack" or "Mr. Disco" or "Round and Round" as the opening single (though I'm not a big fan of the latter), and then probably settled on Vanishing Point as the second single and a guitar track for the third (Dream Attack if unreleased or All the Way).
A lot of the songs strike me as single worthy which is the problem, the only song that doesnt strike me as having potential as a single would be Guilty Partner. As much as I dislike Fine Time, I can imagine that getting lots of club play, though I was too young to experience it myself (just turned 14 when it was released).

Conor, for once I can wholeheartedly agree with you. Vanishing Point is my favorite of all time, and the beginning of the song is the reason why. Technique is my favorite album of all time as well. My favorite part is 1:55 in, the start of the lyric you mentioned. Also I think the transitions are some of the most skillfully created ever; the bass, the occasional sparse guitar line, the synth... all very lush, dark, and gorgeous.
