.. and why?

I'd go 4 the original. The session one (im listning 2 it now) feels like the best live version & certainly hits the spot but theres something wrong with the way the string-synth comes in over Hookys bass in the break between the verses that bugs me(only a bit).

One of the enduring aspects of New Order's occasionally chequered recording career has been that they usually get them right the first time they record them, such as ICB, We All Stand and 586 on the Peel Sessions, and the PCL version of Your Silent Face is no exception.

Can anyone name a re-recording that is better, with maybe the exception of Confusion 1987?

IMO original 12" version of temptation is still the best.:thumb:

Well, that my own opinion, the 98 version is great, though short.. but I'd pick the 87 version over the original anytime.

This might be because it's the first version I heard of the song, for about 10 years or so before I heard the original from a mp3 somewhere...

Same here, the 87 version speaks to me, since I heard it off Substance before Retro was ever suggested.

The 12" version is ok, but the live versions from that era piss all over it.

Original YSF version for me, though the session version is admirable too. Always a fave of mine live in particular at the Olympia 2001 where despite the heat a little shiver passed over.

Studio version of YSF. A very minor gripe which always gets me on any live version, and the session version, is one note of Barney's melodica is ALWAYS higher.

Hard to choose, the evening session version is really good but Barney's singing is better in the original version so i think i'll go for the last one

I prefer the music of the re-recorded version, but the vocal is much better in the original...so I guess I'd hafta go with the origina' baby!! :thumb:

BUT....!! To add to the discussion and to give my boy El Spotty some props...Nineteen63 is better than 1963...hands down.

Peace out my gangsta pimp beeyatches!

Both versions are really good! I prefer the session one, it's a little faster and more roughly than the original one. So I vote for the session one.

Best one in any case is the live version from cologne (16.11.2001), because I was there :D

I like the Session version better, especially the ending.

IMHO - There is no better song then the Temptation 12" version.

Quite like the Peel Session version of YSF. One of the better takes on the album.

Album version. But both are great.

How about Temptation on Rock Around The Clock / Saturday Live in August 1984?

I voted for the BBC version. Both are pretty good, but for a song that I don't get a lot out of, the BBC version I think sounds a bit better, less dramatic.

Studio 54 for me, too! Stunning and then the Village. Perhaps their finest gig.

i feel like some of their life preforms dont feel up to the way they could do...

Prior to Technique, most of their songs were developed live. Notice that the post Low-Life songs sound crappy live? I have yet to hear a bad performance of YSF. LA 2001 almost came close as someone was messing around with their guitar after the first verse.

The fact is that their music is complicated to perform live. One bad machine, too much booze and drugs, a missed cue, faulty monitor could fook the entire song. Studio recordings eliminate the mistakes and problems due to the luxury of starting over.
