Hey all

I'm Josh from NYC, been a big fan since my hears heard Substance back in the early 90's and my favorite album is Republic. I remember Regret getting played a lot as it is my favorite song. I am 19 years old and I hope N.O do come to the USA to tour. I have been wanting to see them for the longest as probably most of you had as well! Hope to interact with some good discussions! Keep it coming..

Welcome, Josh. It is nice to hear someone saying a good word for Republic, for a change.

Hey I've always stood up for Republic, I beleive! Unless I am mistaken, I have championed the very same album itself many an occassion (at least the first half). It's a better album than everyone seems to think

I didn't recall that, Tabsy, but I'm glad to hear it. Although my lack of enthusiasm for Regret has been well-aired, World, Spooky, YO, Liar, Times Change, and Avalanche to me are all good.

No it is'nt, four good songs, five if you're in a generous mood! I believe that fact was backed up in the recent 'best album' thread.

Welcome to the good ship Orderline Josh, I hope you're a strong swimmer!! :smoking:

At last, someone esle who likes Young Offender (you wouldn't beleive the crap I've taken over that particular track!)

I think my stand on Rep is this: While it's not a masterpiece on the order of PCL and Low-life, it has its own merits....

The four good tracks in my opinion are, Regret, World, Ruined In a Day, and Young Offender. These are the only ones I listen to with any regularity. :smoking:

Regret (Fire Island Mix), World (Perfecto Mix), and Ruined In A Day (Reunited Mix) are all excellent as well. Oh yeah, and the Ambient mix of Ruined! :smoking:

Chemical and Spooky are particular faves.....

If there's one NO album I can't listen to all the way thru it's Movement. There are some points where it's even more depressing than Closer (Doubts Even Here, The him, Truth). Overall I like it well enough, but there are certain songs I just skip over, depending on my mood....

Tell ya what, was checking the old messages in my e-mail where I made a crack about the compilation cd having "what I want for Christmas". Chances are I'll have to wait that long. Thanks again, Osama!

You don't like Spooky, Muff-man? I confess it is the single NO song that I find most likely to be playing in my head. I recognize that one might make comments on that fact, based on the title.

Spooky is very average to me Patsy, I don't like it that much. Though I do confess to finding the video a little amusing. :smoking:

Why that's.....strange. What, you thought I was gonna say "spooky"?

Yes, Tabsy, that is the obvious response. In fact, that song is playing in my head at this very moment....

Muffy - how can you dismiss Special? Surely a poignant NO moment?

I've never seen the video, Muffy.

i was just about to ask the same thing phil. Special is the best track on the album.

Wasn't a plagiarism charged just raised against Special in another thread?

Huntsman claims Special is an Unfinished Symphony rip-off...I hear the similarities but they share nothing more than a general feeling and tempo to my ears.

I've got so many of the REGRET remixes, and they are all so very perfect!!! Ooooh, I loved them !

(and I was very happy that 8 year later such a good new album as Get Ready was presented!!!)

Welcome to the mad-house Josh, hope you enjoy yerself. Onto the Republic debate, I think in a previous thread I rated it just above Movement - it doesn't mean I don't like it, just that I don't listen to it very often...The Spooky video is mad:nod: and as for Special it's one of my Faves.

I think Special should've been a single...maybe not Ruined... Unfortunately Republic was released at the time when I didn't get much rave or publicity or discussion ( i.e. I've not discovered the net yet...) So I discard it to a corner after a few listens...it became my most unfamiliar NO albums.... I thought Get Ready was going the same way too..initially I didn't like it....but thank god I discovered this forum, now I kept the disc in heavy rotation....( amongst my Belle & Sebastian discs )

Disappointing cover too that Republic...looks like Tom Cruise & Nicole on the front cover....and don't forget those BAYWATCH clips too....Yuurghhhh!!!!

Welcome Josh !

No one seems to mention "Time Change". Of course, the "à la Electronic" rapping is a bit embarrassing but the chorus is amazing, IMO, and I love "Avalanche" too...

Well Huntsman AND New Order. Steve himself admitted that The Specialist was indeed the ONLY NO song that was intentionally based on someone else's work... which was, and I quote... "Unicycle Synchronies" by Massive Snacks.

Hunts's right, IMO. Actually, when I first heard MA's Unfinished Sympathy, I thought it was a Special's rip off but I learned afterwards that it was written before!

And a warm welcome, Josh!

Id never noticed that. Interesting. Still one of the better songs on the album though.

I don't dislike the song writing, in fact lyrically I like Republic generally, but it's obviously over produced in an attempt to make it sound like the PSBs, fuck knows why, by a certain Mr Hague. If it had Get Ready or Techniques production edge it would be a very good album.

Regarding the Special/unfathomed synths on e, confession,I posted a message along the same on lines on Alt.music.new-order. about 3 months ago.I can't recall whether I read it or watched it somewhere, but it is a factoid.

I really need to get Huntsmans book in time for winter. It would be a great way to spend cold nights and rainy days. Do you remember which article Steve mentioned the Unfinished rip-off?

hey Brian...did your little nugget arrive yet???

Hmmm.. a slightly more than tenuous link exists between the two i'd say.

i thought it couldnt be - then changed my mind!

Well, I guess it's a matter of taste.. I do like Republic, and even if I don't listen to it frequently and buries it on my CD racks somewhere and just found it a few weeks ago to scan it for the site, with the time, I think it is a good album...

I truly enjoy Regret, RIAD, Special, Everyone Everywhere, Times Change, Young Offender & Avalanche.. and I truly enjoy the perfecto mix of World & the minimix of Spooky...

I'm not much into Liar & Chemical though...
