Minor point (but worth mentioning, imo)

In Ideal for Living, Mark Johnson writes of a "quarentine" on JD songs from New Order's live performances at least until 1983, but technically Ceremony and In A Lonely Place are JD tracks, seeing as there's tapes of them performing both songs before Ian died, and Ian wrote both tunes (though apparently so illegible were the lyrics that Barney had to re-write based on what he thought he heard). I guess what I'm saying is New Order were "playing JD songs" in concert prior to 1983, it's just that no one in the audience was aware of Ceremony and IALP being written by Ian. Like I said, a minor point but worth mentioning....

I may be wrong, but I think Ian only wrote the Lyrics for those two songs which were then re-written by Barney. Jarvo, what say you??

In TFAD, Debbie acknowledged that Ian provided the words but Barney handled the musical arrangements, but he still had to redo the lyrics on Ceremony and IALP

I remember an interview Barney had saying that Ian didn't actually write any of the music. Apparently the other lads would jam in the studio, and Ian would just pick up on any tunes he liked and work on the lyrics from there.

I'd always sort of dismissed Ceremony for some reason until recently, and now am agreed on its brilliance. Another live highlight.

The original mix of Ceremony? How different is it to the Substance version?? Damnation, the annoyance of being a young(ish) NO fan! How I rue not purchasing the Pumped Full of Drugs video, Cries & Whispers EP in my money-lacking student days. Can't find them for love nor money these days.

Zico, for some reason I have the feeling that you are very close to me, location wise. Anyway, the original Ceremony is much rawer than the polished re-recording on Substance, more hard edged, for me their finest song. As for PFD it's not that good really but I can fix you up with a copy as soon as the DVD arrives at Muffy towers from Japan, snail mail me the needfull, or maybe you could pop round and collect it!

Have no idea on the origins of these 2 - just the usual fables of Ian writing something, then the band trying to figure out what the hell he wrote from tapes. Defo both New Order songs though, don't see them as JoyDiv choons at all. Opening bars of Ceremony always send a shiver up my spine, even to this day. Best 3 mins in modern pop muzak.

AJ, which do you prefer? The original or the re-recording? I'm beginning to think i'm alone in prefering the original.

I have't to disagree. Both those songs have Curtis written all over'em. The version on STILL..........breathtaking

Albrect said himself that Curtis shaped the way songs turned out.

back in the old days, when you bought vinyl records, 'Ceremony' was released on 2 12" inchers. A green sleeve end a cream & blue sleeve. The green sleeved one had the original version without Gillian on it and the blue/cream sleeved version had the 4-piece re-recorded version on it.Easy. But then the evil ones at Factoty started to mix the mixes up hence if you bought a green sleeve, you got a re-recorded version and vice-versa. Everybody with me so far?. The only way to tell what version you were buying was to either get them to play it in the record shop or study the run out grooves on the record for the relevant serial numbers! Now those were the days!

The Ceremony Story hey NO could make a doco on it so many versions all very good the Still version is a bit sad some twat started the tape half way through the track i think the demo on Heart and Soul is beautifull but im under the impression that In a Lonley Place is not sung by Curtis it sounds a bit to much like the NO b-side i think that explains why the tape cuts half way through just a selling point maybe?
