What is New Order's Subculture about?

It's hard to tell isn't it? Being lonely // being a loner? I love the lyrics that leave something to the imagination. Great song. To clear up the Record Mirror mix concerns from a couple days ago, the discography at niagra lists the Record Mirror mix as the Razormaid Mix V.1 with a fade-out at the end. It's definitely my favorite version.
Me too.
But isn't the Record Mirros version slightly different, I mean beside the fade out?
In any case, I'd love to hear that version with today's sounds and technology + Hooky's bass played throughout the song like it's the case on that version. It would be fantastic.

I don't think I have V.1. I have V.2 and V.3 but not V.1. Maybe you could let us know what the differences are (if any).

It's about shagging by oneself.(masterbation)
and keeper, is this just your translation, or did you actually see this somewhere????
After listening once more, and really conentrating, I believe the song says you should all send every penny, farthing, lira, franc, mark, schilling, dollar to ME!!!!!!!!
I always thought it was about a Russian double glazing salesman with insomnia who also liked a bit of S&M

Barney said it. It was in some old interview lost in the mists of time.
Thought the whole song was simply about 'shafting'. Remember Gillian saying at the time she was embarrassed in case her Mum heard it.
Uhm...Jarvo...sorry...but just what is shafting??? is it akin to shagging...sorry, but that just isn't my Texan lingo...

Thanks Muffy...
I add to my vocabulary almost daily...but damn if these gobshites around here understand me!!!!!!
I know off the bat that I'm totally wrong, but whenever I listen to it I think of some demon or something lurking in the park at night killing people. :|
No, it's definitely about fornication, the lack of said opportunities and the perceived need to onanise instead. Big words day today !
Well if that's the case D.J. then:- WANKING - accounts for almost half of the entire New Order back catalogue then (subliminally, that is). As for the other half - can't be arsed trying to figure those out - too late in the day now, frankly.

I knew we would have a quick start in categorising!
When will we take a look at the other half?

I`m sick of everyone slagging off the Substance version of Subculture. It is one of my favourites, and one of the first NO songs I really liked (that wasnt already famous)
I've always thought subculture was a pretty decent track.. EVAN the substance version.
Surely im not alone !!? ![]()
The Low-Life version is ok, as is the Record Mirror mix, and it was a good live track, but the Devil's Tapioca that was the remix spawned an evil thread of backing vocals and associated mondungi in Barney's brain, and they haven't quite ever made a full recovery.

You're not alone.
sorry...but the Substance version of this song doesn't hold a candle to the original...but that's just my opinion...and we all know what that's worth (last time I checked...it wasn't even worth a frigging nickel)
